American History X (DVD)

Description:

Some Legacies Must End! Edward Norton delivers a searing performance as a former neo-Nazi skinhead whose life was almost destroyed by his own hatred--and who now struggles to prevent his younger brother from following in his footsteps. Seeking retribution for his father's murder and burning with rage, Derek Vinyard (Norton) becomes the charismatic leader of a local White Power movement. Despite his intelligence, Derek's incendiary actions culminate in a brutal murder and three years in prison. Now on parole, Derek returns home to find his brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), being seduced by the same anger, bigotry and violence that almost destroyed his life.

Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to Edward Norton is that his Oscar-nominated performance in American History X nearly convinces you that there is a shred of logic in the tenets of white supremacy. If that statement doesn't horrify you, it should; Norton is so fully immersed in his role as a neo-Nazi skinhead that his character's eloquent defense of racism is disturbingly persuasive--at least on the surface. Looking lean and mean with a swastika tattoo and a mind full of hate, Derek Vinyard (Norton) has inherited racism from his father, and that learning has been intensified through his service to Cameron (Stacy Keach), a grown-up thug playing tyrant and teacher to a growing band of disenfranchised teens from Venice Beach, California, all hungry for an ideology that fuels their brooding alienation.

The film's basic message--that hate is learned and can be unlearned--is expressed through Derek's kid brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), whose sibling hero-worship increases after Derek is imprisoned (or, in Danny's mind, martyred) for the killing of two black men. Lacking Derek's gift of rebel rhetoric, Danny is easily swayed into the violent, hateful lifestyle that Derek disowns during his thoughtful time in prison. Once released, Derek struggles to save his brother from a violent fate, and American History X partially suffers from a mix of intense emotions, awkward sentiment, and predictably inevitable plotting. And yet British director Tony Kaye (who would later protest against Norton's creative intervention during post-production) manages to juggle these qualities--and a compelling clash of visual styles--to considerable effect. No matter how strained their collaboration may have been, both Kaye and Norton can be proud to have created a film that addresses the issue of racism with dramatically forceful impact. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutally Brilliant

Going into American History X, I knew two things about the movie: 1) it was about neo nazi's 2)Edward Norton was suppose to keep constant with being an amazing actor. Apon viewing History, I left with knowing three things: 1)The writing and direction are bar none 2) Edward Norton is still a phenominal actor and 3)American History X is one helluva film.Nazi's are characters which aren't too common in American film. Outside of being plastered by an All American protagonist assult rifle, (or by the Bear Jew's bat) Nazi's are untouched by the cinema. Never before has anyone tried to take a Nazi, a modern day Nazi at that, and turn him into a heroic character. American History X uses this as it's main hook. Edward Norton plays a reformed Neo-Nazi in Venice Beach. After being incarcerated for 3 years in prision, Derek Vinyard (Norton) looks to reform his life and save his brother from the gang life that he lead. Norton's acting in the late 90's was that of legends. AHX catipultes him on a podium of acting that is untouched by the hords of modern day preformers. His acting talents have leaked into other flicks, but with History X and Fight Club, Norton was in rare form, catipulting two revolutionary films even further.Thematically, American History gives a good amount of social commentary where the message is prevelant, but you aren't bashed over the head. Touching on a theme that Unforgiven gave, direcotr Tony Kaye asks us, can forgiveness be an option to a person with such a terrible history? Mixing themes of race, gang life, and redemption, American History message is left blatently open, but is strong and powerful.American History X blew me away. I intially thought X would showcase the downfall of a man with no morals. Instead, I was introduced to a cast of mentally complex characters that grow and evolve. As brutal as it is brilliant, AHX is rated R for good reason. Graphic violence, rape and language is used liberally. It packs as big a punch with adult material is it does with it's message. On the last note, Hollywood once agian takes its stabs at Republicans (although Vinyard is right winged Naxi, he has very educated political opinions), dissapointing me, the "close minded conservative". Regardless, History X is a great film that derserves to be viewed.9.5

5.0 out of 5 stars Iconic Edward Norton performance

H.D. · November 18, 2019

Edward Norton gives a rip roaring hyper intensified performance as a nazi-like skinhead that hates anyone that isn't white. This changes when he's arrested for killing a black person in the streets and is befriended by a black guy in jail that keeps him safe and awakens his mind. Edward's transformation from evil to good is mind blowing because of his performance. When he's released he's a completely different person and many around him are either stunned in amazement or turned off. We know the ones turned off were the white supremacist's that had looked up to him. This film is almost Shakespearean in a modern day kind of way. It's poetic and philosophical and works because of Edward's performance, but he's also surrounded by some brilliant supporting players that enable him to do a great job. He's forever praised those guys from Edward Furlong, Beverly D'Angelo, Elliott Gould, Fairuza Balk, Guy Torry, Jennifer Lien and Ethan Suplee. They all did a good job bringing this disturbing, yet ultimately transformational story to life. This was the first Edward Norton film where he was #1 on the marquee and movie poster. Before that he had blown movie goers away with his debut in Primal Fear as a convicted killer, then sang to Drew Barrymore in Woody Allen's Everyone Says I love You, then played the lawyer to Hustler founder Larry Flynt in the People Vs. Larry Flynt. American History X would solidify his status as a leading man that is also an incredible actor.Trivia: He met with Francis Ford Coppola to audition for one of his films as another lawyer in the John Grisham adaptation of "The Rainmaker" which later went to Matt Damon, but that was only because after Coppola listened to Norton's labor of love project American History X, he said, "You have to do that movie. If you do that, no one will be able to touch you or typecast you again." He ended up being right, since this is one of Norton's iconic performances that garnered him an Academy Award Nomination. He should've got the Oscar though, but it was another politically correct awards season.

I was debating whether to watch this film as id never heard of it and it sounded like one of those pointless drags with no script but when i saw Edward Norton (Fight Club) and Edward Furlong (Terminator 2) were in it i bought it and boy i wasnt dissapointed. This film from start to finish had me gripped. The characters were mean, the story was harsh and overall it was disturbing but brilliant.I think Edward Norton Portrays his character brilliantly.Id recommend this film to anyone (ive leant it to my brother).I found this film gripping but most of all disturbing because it made me realise "There are people like this" and like I said, it was convincing enough for me to find some scenes very disurbing but overall this film is ace. This film isnt for the sensitive side of movie watchers as every race, religion, gender is insulted by Edward Nortons character.Over all i rate this film 5/5 as its most certainly one of my favourites now.
