Caravaggio. The Complete Works. 45th Ed. (45th Edition)

Description:

Caravaggio, or more accurately Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), was always a name to be reckoned with. Notorious bad boy of Italian painting, the artist was at once celebrated and controversial: violent in temper, precise in technique, a creative master, and a man on the run. Today, he is considered one of the greatest influences in all art history. This edition offers a neat and comprehensive Caravaggio catalogue raisonné. Each of his paintings is reproduced from recent top-quality photography, allowing for a vivid encounter with the artist’s ingenious repertoire of looks and gestures, as well as numerous detail shots of his boundary-breaking naturalism. Five accompanying chapters trace the complete arc of Caravaggio’s career from his first public commissions in Rome through to his growing celebrity status and trace his tempestuous personal life, in which drama loomed as prominently as in his canvases.

5.0 out of 5 stars An art lovers’ dream. It is good to see that beautifully made and composed books is not a lost art.

D. · June 2, 2023

This book is a treasure for anyone who is a bibliophile, or interested in the life and work of Caravaggio as a student, a lover of art history, or all four. The illustrations in this volume are all new, which makes it instantly worth having as you will not see this quality and persecutive of photography in any other publication on the work of this artist. The history of the artist and his work is brilliantly presented and researched: this is a treasure trove of information. The volume is beautifully made and organised so that it functions as a wonderful biography and as a catalogue of a complete retrospective of the art of Caravaggio. As a book, it is a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Taschen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caravaggio-Such a treat!

A.M.M. · May 28, 2025

This book is pure visual drama. Every page slaps you with shadows, blood, and raw emotion—the man didn’t paint, he provoked. Taschen nailed it with killer print quality and commentary that doesn’t bore you to death. If you want to feel something deep, dark, and delicious, this is your bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outsanding presentation of the works of a master

J.D. · October 4, 2020

As a professional artist, I revel in my collection of books displaying the artwork of the great masters and this volume shines at the top of them all. The brilliant and sharp imagery on page after page draws you further and further into the appreciation of his technique as well as just the simple beauty of his compositions. I enjoy the way you get the full image of a painting then subsequent pages showing details worth studying. My favorite, The Calling of St. Matthew, is presented on a 3-page, fold out display so that you can soak up the entire masterpiece in one wide view and not miss a single detail. Anyone serious about art history will appreciate adding this volume to their collection. If you are a painter, it is more than worth your investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pages and pages of this famous artist’s paintings!

D. · September 29, 2024

I have always loved Caravaggio’s work, and this beautifully printed book didn’t disappoint! The man may have been a bit of a bad-tempered nut job, but his talent for painting people and objects using the play of light and dark known as chiaroscuro (a technique first used by da Vinci) made him one of the world’s most famous painters. If you want to know more about his turbulent life, read “Caravaggio, A Life” by Helen Langdon, or any of the other biographies about him.

4.0 out of 5 stars A visually well done book, personally would get the bigger edition

R.V. · January 11, 2023

This book is visually very pretty and well assembled... And the biographical information that I've thumbed through so far seems interesting and has made me want to read it which I don't always feel that way about some artist coffee table booksThey have nice blowups of scenes from Caravaggio's work...But I'm a little torn on the book's overall size.. it was a little smaller than I expected it to be. I feel like if you want a biography on Caravaggio alongside his work that is easier to hold and read, this book is prob a good choice for you versus a true coffee table sized book.If you're looking for a larger sized coffee table volume that really shows off his works as a whole, this might not be it. This version would be good for someone on a budget or someone who wants a more portable version. His work is so good and it’s showcased so well, would get the XL edition if you want a showcase of his work
