5.0 out of 5 stars a deliciously modern book about all the foods & drinks

J.B. · August 19, 2018

so unexpectedly appetizingly refreshing to experience a book about food based on infographics rather than photography.open this book at random on any page and you'll learn something about food or cooking or wine or cocktails or ingredients or pairings--and probably be mouthwateringly inspired to try something new.or transported back to your childhood and some secret corner of your past. in my case a tiny little infographic that rightly separates the more hearty characterful northern british cakes from their wussy southern british wannabee teatime competitors.but this is not merely a proustian guide to biscuity & cake-y nostalgia. it's an encyclopedically global journey through everything that matters in delicious-ness. packed with yummy insight and everyday practicality--from the most appetizingly detailed visual guide to the organoleptics of wine (including a column on which glasses bring out the most in every wine) to an emergency room checklist for those 911 baking crises we all dread but still have to deal with sooner or later ('burnt bottoms', 'jagged edges', 'cake tears when taken out of pan' if your oven's a war zone, help is at hand ;)a mouthwatering section on meat will instantly put an inspiringly helpful, globally knowledgeable butcher, chef & sommelier in your corner--taking the guesswork out of prepping, roasting, grilling & the o so critical "sides" for your sunday roast.the insect protein spread is anatomically accurate i'm sure, but also mercifully short (you must memorize "what to eat in the jungle--though i hope you never need it).vegetable protein is properly celebrated you'll be more pleased to hear--love the prose poem celebration of pulses, that 'nutritional powerhouse', and the infographic homage to the perfect brazilian black beans & rice.it’s not a recipe book per se but it’s lovingly dotted with temptingly easy delights & techniques—mostly modern, but hard not to be blown away by Thomas Jefferson’s ice cream recipe!and the drinks--aaaahhhhh the drinks--getting as much loving detail as the food. such a yummy comprehensive guide to grape varietals you can roll around your tongue from the minerally falanghina to the lemony picpoul to the intensely deliciously sweet furmint. finally someone has the brains to organize all those stupid wine words like bandaid, wet dog, dirt and leather from the inside out with the basic smells and tastes actual humans can recognize. oh and fancy cocktails, classic cocktails, champagne cocktails, beer cocktails, after-dinner cocktails (well overdue for a comeback ;)this book never ends, because you're completely freed up from the obligation of reading it cover to cover.but there's only one possible final spread: the "how do you say cheers in china" a to z of making friends everywhere....."kippis" (i miss drinking with my besties in finland--need to fix that!)the only warning this addictive book really needs is around how many copies you'll end up buying--two for yourself (home + summer house, natch) & presents for every foodie friend you have ..... they’ll never forget you--& just watch out for how much more delicious it will be to visit them ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes a great gift or to own

So much knowledge I could read this book over and over and still learn something new. If you or your recipient is a graphic designer it’s an added plus with the well thought out visuals.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than you might expect

I have found this to be one of the most useful books for my personal projects but honestly it’s really delicious eye candy, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great gift for any visual foodie

P.K. · September 15, 2019

I bought this as a birthday present for a foodie friend. I couldn't wait for her to open it so that I could see some of the content myself. It covers a range of topics such as meat cuts, beer, cheese, types of knives, and more. It's dense with plenty of content that makes it the perfect coffee table book. The print quality is excellent with sturdy pages and vivid colors.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's upside down

D.A.S. · July 13, 2020

When I opened the book, the pages were placed into the cover upside down. With the dust jacket, it's not really an issue because I can switch the dust jacket. But without the dust jacket, I can either have the cover on the front and all of the pages upside down (and starting at the end), or I can have the pages right side up and starting at page 1 but the cover is upside down on the back. So it loses one star for that.I didn't realize this book was so huge, but that's really my fault for not looking at the dimensions. I was expecting this to be about half the actual size that it is, because it is now the largest book I own. I'm glad I was planning on keeping it on the coffee table, because it's the only place it will fit. No stars lost for that.As for the contents, I haven't spent much time looking through it yet, but it seems to be exactly what I was hoping it would be. Plenty of great illustrations and graphics with full information. It makes for an interesting read, and I especially like that it's in 3 languages. Based on the content alone, I would've given this 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great "Coffee Table" Book

H.F. · December 21, 2018

This book is huge and full of interesting information about food and beverages, much of it very useful, such as ingredient substitutions for healthy eating. Not an American publication, so also interesting from that perspective. I would recommend having a magnifying glass available since some of the infographics are quite small. If you have a foodie in your life, this would be a great gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hours of fun and education

B. · January 17, 2019

I can spend hours pouring over all the fun facts and diagrams in this book! The info graphics are well done and the information almost limitless. What a novel way to think about food!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting

The book presents many examples of infrographics used in imparting vast amounts of information in a picture. It is an important reference material I have added to my library in the study of infrographics.

Great read

Great book to better understand how to cook. The illustrations are informative.

A Really Great Book

n. · September 6, 2018

I now have three books in this series and this is as good if not better than the others. The quality to be expected from Taschen who produce the best books on the planet. Just one small criticism - some of the diagrams are so complicated it is impossible or very difficult to read the full details. For example page 2 "The Ducasse Family".
