5.0 out of 5 stars Larsson 101
This small book offers a great introduction to the delightful art of Carl Larsson. The reproduction quality is excellent and the selection of images well chosen. Fortunately, the prices for this out-of-print volume are still very reasonable. Many such Larsson items are now prohibitively expensive. Larsson, thanks in large part to Pomegranate Press, is finally getting the recognition he deserves. His work ranks right up there with Rockwell and has, for too long, been the best kept secret in the world of illustration. I found a german-text edition of an earlier publication of Larsson's paintings in a used book store a few years ago. I've been a fan ever since. As I stated in another Larsson review recently - in a jaded, cynical world Larsson's paintings are the perfect antidote. A quick perusal should explain why he is considered Sweden's most popular artist. This is a well produced book that should be of interest to anyone who appreciates a gifted brush. I hope either Taschen or Pomegranate is giving some thought to a thorough catalog of this master illustrator's work. It's long overdue.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very good condition
I got this for my mom since she loves his work and she adored it! The quality was very good and it came a day early, even.
5.0 out of 5 stars great condition
gift - like new
5.0 out of 5 stars A work of subtlety and engagement
Carl Larsson's work is magical- it is as fresh and modern as the day it was created. Every painting is alive with whimisical detail- each time you look at it, you discover something new. Larsson creates a deep sense of intimacy with the viewer- you feel like he is inviting you to be part of his family and be there with him as they are growing up their community in Sweden.
5.0 out of 5 stars Love His Illustrations
I will buy anything that has his illustrations. They are romantic and beautifully, lovingly painted.
5.0 out of 5 stars A bargain for great Larson pics!
Love this book! Great historical info and clear reproductions. Taschen is a great publisher.
A lyrical reflection on childhood and family life
The Swedish artist Carl Larsson, 1853-1919, is not very well known in Britain so this introduction to his watercolours and drawings is very welcome, especially when produced by a publisher of art books as experienced as Taschen. When looking at the artist's drawings and paintings of childhood and rural family life, which in other, less-skilled, hands could become sentimental and mawkish, it is easy to forget the poverty and deprivation of the artist's own childhood. In this book, from 1994, Renate Puvogel describes the artist's life and career, in a manner that very effectively complements almost 150 illustrations, the great majority being in colour, which are accompanied by brief commentary. Puvogel's text is accompanied by 9 illustrations and photographs, all but one in b/w and the book also contains an informative Chronology.Larsson's father was "a good-for-nothing who worked as a casual labourer, sailed as a stoker and lost the lease to a nearby mill only to end up there later as a mere grain carrier". He was also, according to the artist, a loveless man lacking in self-control, a drinker and a bully. In contrast his mother provided for the everyday needs of her two sons by working as a laundress. The boys' early years were a series of moves from one rooming house to another, each room being shared by three families. One can thus see Larsson's art as a reflection on the reality of growing up in poverty amongst filth and vice. The artist's maternal grandfather was a painter and his grandmother was a storyteller. A teacher at his Poor School recognized his pupil's drawing talent and in 1869 he was accepted by the Art Academy in Stockholm. His interest in drawing enabled him to get a job as a newspaper cartoonist but, in pursuit of a career as an academic painter, he travelled to Paris in 1877 and met the Gothenburg merchant, Pontus Fürstenberg, who became his patron and his wife, the artist Karin Bergöö. Thereafter, he gained much additional work as a book illustrator, received commissions for murals and, between 1890-1906, created albums of drawings and watercolours, such as "Our Home", "Our Place in the Country" and "My Family", upon which much of his reputation is based. It is very interesting that, at exactly the same time, Edvard Munch was creating a very different representation of Nordic life. The artist's earlier style, in which he employed blurred colours without contours interspersed with flashing accents, was replaced in the 1890s by motifs outlined in black that possessed a wealth of detail and carefully balanced colour tones. This technique facilitated mechanical reproduction of his drawings and watercolours that, in turn, increased public awareness of his work. Larsson also incorporated aspects of Japanese art into his work, notably the flatness of woodcuts and the delicacy of pen-and-ink drawings. Larsson was concerned to celebrate the bounty of nature and the mutual benefit to be gained from man's cooperation with the wider environment.Larsson's albums were envisaged as promoting an integrated lifestyle, much in advance of the Bauhaus, and dealt with clothing, nutrition, design, furniture and architecture. This concept was introduced in practice at the family's house in Sundborn which utilised many space- and labour-saving ideas, and had all walls decorated with his art works and Karin's textile designs. In 1897, the family purchased a large farm and estate at Spadarfvet which further enlarged the extended `family'. Until the end of his life he continued to paint portraits and undertake commissions but continuing disputes over the design for the "Winter Solstice Sacrifice" fresco of the National Museum prevented this being painted. In the course of the artist's albums we see his family growing up, from "Brita and Me", 1895, to "Karin and Kersti", 1898, to "Eighteen Years Old!", 1902. The family feature in watercolours illustrating aspects of daily life, as in "A Good Place to Bathe", "Catching Crayfish", "Breakfast under the Great Birch", "The Kitchen" (a detail of which illustrates the front cover),"When the Children Have Gone to Bed", "The Punishment Corner" and "Sunday Nap", all painted between 1890-99, "Letter-writing", 1912, "Homework", 1898, "The Chess Game", 1902, "Christmas Eve", 1904-06, "In the Church", 1905 and "The Apple Harvest", 1904.The only slight disadvantage is that this book, focusing as it does on Larsson's lyrical watercolours and drawings, may seem to some a tad repetitious. There are, however, other books available that illustrate his wider oeuvre.
