Koloman Moser: Designing Modern Vienna 1897-1907

Description:

Tracing the career of Koloman Moser, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century design, this stunning book focuses on Moser’s accomplishments in the decorative arts. During his short career, Koloman Moser became a towering figure in Viennese culture. His varied work in interior and graphic design, furniture, textiles, jewelry, metalwork, glass, and earthenware helped usher in the modern era. This book surveys the entirety of Moser’s oeuvre. It examines his work as a graphic designer and his involvement with the Vienna Secession, with special focus given to his role as an illustrator for the journal Ver Sacrum (Sacred Spring). Moser’s forays into textile design and ceramic work are also introduced. The book features his designs for the Vienna Secession, Thonet Brothers, and the Mautner family, among others that characterize his early modern style. The book also explores Moser’s seminal role as a founding member of the Vienna Workshops, along with architect Josef Hoffmann and patron Fritz Waerndorfer. Included are many reproductions of Moser’s masterpieces, including the window of the Steinhof Chapel, his exhibition posters, postage stamps and currency, and elegant examples from his design portfolio, "The Source."

A great look at one of Vienna's preeminent Secessionist designers who had a long-ranging influence on the arts of the 20th century. Beautiful photographs.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Actual Exhibit is Much Better than the catalogue book.

I visited the exhibition, which was filled with fantastic and inspirational design ideas in interiors, furniture, and graphics. Sadly, the catalogue is not a very good record of the items on exhibition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A DEFINITIVE VOLUME ON MOSER AS A GENERALIST.

A.R.V. · June 13, 2013

My first impression of this hefty volume, was "My God, another coffee book covering too much and saying very little of any depth."I am glad one first reading proved me wrong. Let me specify that I bought it specifically for the chapter on glass and ceramics. But I started in the back, reading Moser's biography. I was really startled to find about his beginnings as an illustrator of magazines and children's book, his amazing "jack of all trades" talent when it came to everything and anything. He designed children's toys, Alma Mahler's dresses, furniture, posters, glass, ceramics, interiors for several important architectural projects and friends' homes. The section of glass is very clear as to Moser's conflicting relationships with the Weinerworkstatte, Bakalowitz, who used to parcel out his designs to Meyer's Neffe if they were to be simple as he wished, and to Loetz for its characteristic gaudy decors, much against Moser's own evolving estethics of simplicity. Loetz' copyright infringement of Moser's work comes in for a drubbing: "Decorations designed by Moser were applied to forms that were not by him; conversely, vases based on Moser's designs for the form, with decorations by others, were produced with considerable success by Loetz until 1931" (Moser died of larynx cancer in 1916, at 48). A fact of some importance: Moser produced only 35 designs for Loetz, and his whole involvement with glass only lasted from 1900 to 1903. There is a true wealth of documentary materials. The book is worth having. Just shop around. At the neue Gallery, where i got my copy, I was told it was not being sold on Bolo!
