5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for leaders in academic medical centers

A.C. · November 25, 2015

Jeff Houpt knows academic medical centers inside and out. He has seen successful leadership and failed leadership in a wide variety of medical centers. In this fascinating book, he and his co-authors explain the dynamics and lead the reader through how everyone can improve as a leader (and how to deal with problem leaders). Case studies with discussion bring the issues to life, and include teaching points of how the problems could be addressed. Aspiring, junior, and even senior leaders in the AMC will find this book a valuable resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new essential

This is a superb book, authored by three people who bring both articulate thought and considerable experience to the subject. Any department chair, dean, or VP for health affairs will be enriched and made more effective by time spent reading this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Academic medical leadership

Excellent assessment of a medical center, thoughtful, circumspect, but offers more in the way of warning than practical, prospective advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoy reading leadership development books

A.C. · January 9, 2017

I enjoy reading leadership development books. I am currently in a leading MHA program and will serve my fellowship at a leading AMC. I have been looking for a book which focused on AMC's, and this is the best one that I have found thus far. I recommended this to other developing leaders who aspire to be strong contributors to their organization.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well, worth the read!

Excellent ! Learned a lot about AMC.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one was perfect for my development as a leader in academic medicine ...

A.C. · November 10, 2015

I have read many leadership development books. This one was perfect for my development as a leader in academic medicine - it included plenty of strong leadership theory content and also very practical background information with specific tips for that environment. Not a week goes by in my job in the Dean's office that I don't recall relevant examples. "Culture is King" and the concept of the "Village Elders" frame my approach to my work and the lessons in dealing with specific individuals help me in day-to-day operations. This book is a "how to" guide for leaders in academic medicine, and the lessons in this book can take years to learn on your own.
