Secret Boston: An Unusual Guide ('Secret' guides)

Description:

Cower before a Viking, conjure the ghosts of a lost convent, sit on an unsittable bench, artistically arrange abandoned rocking horses, worship a cod, roam ruins of a zoo, tour a dozen enormous eggs perched on an island, honor the forebears of Excel spreadsheets, lose yourself in a trippy Russian artistic dreamscape hidden in a Masonic Hall, honor a huge pear, rent a dragon, find Harvard's secret pig, take a mini-gondola ride through teeny Venice, fall in love with a donkey, kiss President Jackson's lips, read 20,000 cookbooks, appreciate bad art, dress up as a marshmallow, hold a cremated elephant in a peanut butter jar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book For People Who Want to See Something Beyond the Standard Tourist Places

A.C. · July 31, 2025

I am always looking for different places to take visitors. This is a great resource with hundreds of sites off the beaten tourist path. My only minor complaint is that the binding is quite tight so the book doesn't quite open all the way which means it can be a challenge to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book.

This book compiles page after page of unusual, clever, and less-obvious sites and scenes in an historic city that suffers from an overemphasis on the same old standard tourist destinations. Before traveling, I’m always at risk of spending hours scouring the Internet, studying podcasts, and interviewing locals or previous visitors for travel tips. For Boston, at least, this book has done the hard work for me—scratching beneath the surface and delivering the off the beaten path insider info in one nice little package. The book is also notably weighty and of nice construction quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars essential for a trip to boston!

C.M. · September 22, 2024

I love traveling to new cities but I try to avoid the old school big name books because usually I don’t learn much or the recommendations are very touristy. I usually stick to online research. But I am SO glad I found the ‘secret’ travel series. It’s full of hidden gems and has detailed but concise descriptions so I can decide what I might enjoy. Secret Boston is awesome if you’re coming visiting the city the first time, tenth time …. or even if you’re a local like me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who Knew?

D.B.M. · October 6, 2024

What a fun read this book is! Clever, short descriptions, humorous. As I read it, what kept coming to mind was: Who knew?My mother, who passed away at 96, loved to listen to the brothers Ray and Tom Magliozzi as they hosted the hit series Car Talk on PBS. The staff of Car Talk worked in a cramped office in Harvard Square featuring the window sign: Dewey, Cheetham, and Howe. If you look for it, it’s still there, over a decade after the show ended. Who knew?Well, apparently the author of the book, Kiernan Schmitt, knew. In all, he knew about 150 places. How he found these fascinating and little known locales is a mystery. But I’m glad he did; and so will you if buy the book. Filled with excellent photos (taken by the author), the book is a quick and easy read.--Donovan Moore
