Description:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Winner of the CASEY Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year

“An instant sports classic.” —New York Post * “Stellar.” —The Wall Street Journal * “A true masterwork…880 pages of sheer baseball bliss.” —BookPage (starred review) * “This is a remarkable achievement.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A magnum opus from acclaimed baseball writer Joe Posnanski, The Baseball 100 is an audacious, singular, and masterly book that took a lifetime to write. The entire story of baseball rings through a countdown of the 100 greatest players in history, with a foreword by George Will.

Longer than
Moby-Dick and nearly as ambitious,The Baseball 100 is a one-of-a-kind work by award-winning sportswriter and lifelong student of the game Joe Posnanski that tells the story of the sport through the remarkable lives of its 100 greatest players. In the book’s introduction, Pulitzer Prize–winning commentator George F. Will marvels, “Posnanski must already have lived more than 200 years. How else could he have acquired such a stock of illuminating facts and entertaining stories about the rich history of this endlessly fascinating sport?”

Baseball’s legends come alive in these pages, which are not merely rankings but vibrant profiles of the game’s all-time greats. Posnanski dives into the biographies of iconic Hall of Famers, unfairly forgotten All-Stars, talents of today, and more. He doesn’t rely just on records and statistics—he lovingly retraces players’ origins, illuminates their characters, and places their accomplishments in the context of baseball’s past and present. Just how good a pitcher is Clayton Kershaw in the twenty-first- century game compared to Greg Maddux dueling with the juiced hitters of the nineties? How do the career and influence of Hank Aaron compare to Babe Ruth’s? Which player in the top ten most deserves to be resurrected from history?

No compendium of baseball’s legendary geniuses could be complete without the players of the segregated Negro Leagues, men whose extraordinary careers were largely overlooked by sportswriters at the time and unjustly lost to history. Posnanski writes about the efforts of former Negro Leaguers to restore sidelined Black athletes to their due honor, and draws upon the deep troves of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and extensive interviews with the likes of Buck O’Neil to illuminate the accomplishments of players such as pitchers Satchel Paige and Smokey Joe Williams; outfielders Oscar Charleston, Monte Irvin, and Cool Papa Bell; first baseman Buck Leonard; shortstop Pop Lloyd; catcher Josh Gibson; and many, many more.

The Baseball 100 treats readers to the whole rich pageant of baseball history in a single volume. Chapter by chapter, Posnanski invites readers to examine common lore with brand-new eyes and learn stories that have long gone unheard. The epic and often emotional reading experience mirrors Posnanski’s personal odyssey to capture the history and glory of baseball like no one else, fueled by his boundless love for the sport.

Engrossing, surprising, and heartfelt,
The Baseball 100 is a magisterial tribute to the game of baseball and the stars who have played it.

Praise for The Baseball 100 and Joe Posnanski

“I love baseball, I know baseball, and this book
is baseball. It’s the whole story of baseball told through the 100 greatest players of all time . . . But what really makes me say, 'Give this to the baseball people in your life,' is that it’s a book that, when you read it, you fall in love with the game all over again. . . . Every sport needs great players, but it also needs great writers, and Joe Posnanski has done something great for the game of baseball with this book.”
—Tony Dokoupil, CBS This Morning

“Stellar . . . Always fun . . . A book for the moment but also for the bookshelf of the future, an old friend that will bring back old times and old arguments again and again. . . . The rankings were all made by Mr. Posnanski, who is contemporary sports writing’s biggest star. He writes with grace and wit, combining an old-time sense of style with the mountains of numbers and factoids and observations that can be found on the internet.”
—Leigh Montville, The Wall Street Journal

“Posnanski knocks it out of the park with this fascinating deep dive into the careers of those he considers baseball’s 100 greatest players. . . . Will surprise even devoted followers of the sport . . . This is a remarkable achievement.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Major League Baseball fans, you just won the lottery. . . . Posnanski presents 880 pages of sheer baseball bliss . . . It’s a true masterwork, and his writing is so good that it’s likely to engross even those who know nothing about the sport.”
BookPage (starred review)

“Posnanski skillfully weaves statistics into the narrative without spilling into geekdom, and he searches baseball history for his candidate pool while combing the records for just the right datum or quote. . . . Red meat, and mighty tasty at that, for baseball fans with an appreciation for the past and power of the game.”
Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Posnanski offers manna for baseball geeks with his selection of the 100 all-time greatest baseball players, melding the sabermetrics chops of a Bill James with the eloquence and droll humor of a Roger Angell. . . . . Posnanski also nobly, and rightly, casts a wide net, embracing Japanese legends Ichiro Suzuki and Sadaharu Oh, and, more important, long-neglected Negro leagues players, such as Oscar Charleston. . . . Most important, these selections will bring to the mind’s eye of any baseball fan a vision of how singularly great each of these athletes have played—or, in the case of the old-timers, might have played—the game. Recommended.”
Booklist

“You can quibble with some of Joe Posnanski's judgements. And so what? That's always been part of the fun for baseball fans. And Posnanski on Baseball has always been fun. . . . This book is a baseball feast that can be consumed in small bites or large gulps. Either way, it's a book we fans will return to often. To spark or settle debates, sure. But especially for the endless pleasure of the history of our greatest game as delivered by one of its finest chroniclers.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb - rankings interesting, thought-provoking well suppported &, at times, surprising

B.J. · July 31, 2025

I’m behind on my reading – I know this book is several years old – but I just read it over the last week. I read the Football 100 and the Basketball 100 first and would recommend both of those as well, particularly the former. That said, the Baseball 100 is far and away the best of the three and is probably one of the best sports books I’ve ever read. The reasons being:1. I’m about 10 years older than the author (my peak baseball card collecting period was primarily 1967-1976) but that is close enough to identify with him closely in terms of baseball fandom. Based on a rough count I think 30-35 of the players listed in the book were active to some degree during my card collecting days and I owned multiple cards of all of those – I still recall in detail my Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Ryan, Rose, Seaver, etc. cards.2. Baseball’s history is so much longer than either football or basketball and this inherently provides many more interesting players for consideration.3. Baseball is also such a statistically oriented sport – especially now with the more recent analytical measures (especially when recreated for the past) – and the accumulation and comparison of such stats dovetails with a rankings book such as this.4. Those numerous stats also make players and performances more comparable over the years than is the case in football or basketball. The comparisons are still not foolproof of course but, despite various rule changes and eras in baseball (deadball, segregation, steroid, etc.), in my mind they come close. Given training and diet etc. equivalency, I believe the best players from long ago could play today and vice-versa, of course.5. But, most of all, what makes this book so good is the author’s knowledge of baseball and its history and the players. And how he weaves the stories and legends and stats and comparisons together. His writing is simply superb – there was not one chapter of the 100 that I did not thoroughly enjoy. The stories of the Negro League players were especially educational – I had heard of all of those players but really knew nothing about them otherwise (outside of Satchel Paige). And, to a lesser degree, the same could be said for my knowledge of some of the MLB players from early last century. I knew more about them (though I do have to admit I had never heard of Arky Vaughan) but I had no idea how good some of them were such as Wagner, Speaker, Ott, Foxx, etc.As for the players included in the 100, I think the author did a great job overall. I’m sure anyone could come up with players that are missing but the only two that I thought of immediately were Harmon Killebrew and Paul Molitor. If I thought about it more, I’m sure I could come up with a few others. The rankings were reasonable and understandable. There were some peculiarities for some of the players (which the author explains late in the book) and I understand his reasoning but will have to say, I think DiMaggio was significantly underrated at 56 and Jackie Robinson to a lesser degree at 42. Though 56 and 42 make sense for the obvious reasons. Rose at 60 seems underrated as well. I would have not ranked Bonds at 3 either. For me, too much of his last decade of production is suspect and without those inflated stats he would be 15-20 slots below. He is certainly not the third best player of all time IMO. Did anyone else in this list have such production so late in their career and, coincidentally, at the same time their Balloon Barry caricature appeared? Bothers me that he is ranked above Aaron as well as Williams, Musial, Cobb and Mantle. Among others. Same thoughts to a lesser degree about Clemens’ and ARod’s rankings. But those are minor points and don’t take away from this book at all. In fact, such points are what makes this book thought-provoking.I hope the author writes another book for the players he ranks as 101-200. It would be interesting to see which players just missed the top 100. At the same time, he could update this book with chapters on recent players who have surely entered the top 100. My guess is that Judge and Ohtani and perhaps 1-2 others have jumped into the top 100 now.

Bought this for my brother who is a baseball fanatic. He was in a reading slump, so I liked how the book is written to be 100 separate stories. Surprisingly, he didn’t already know everything in it. It seems to be well-researched and easy and fun to read, unlike some nonfiction. Even better, he’s reading again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of stories about everything that makes baseball the great game it is

Got this as a x-mas present for my dad a few years back and he has absolutely loved it and still pulls it out to read passages from time to time, when he thinks about a player, or a specific memory described in the book.Really can’t go wrong getting this for any baseball fan you may know, as it has great historical content for older folks but still with enough recently modern stories to keep younger baseball fans interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and very readable!

While this book is formidable in terms of the number of pages (827!) one must remember there are one hundred stories - and each story is unique unto itself. I especially appreciated the wide range of baseball greats remembered in this book - many I did not know but came to appreciate. I am passing this book on to my thirteen year old grandson who LOVES and plays baseball and is already a fountain of knowledge on the sport and many of the players. I am sure he will devour this book! highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book!

If you're a baseball fan you'll love this one! Joe Posnanski does an excellent job with each mini biography. He includes men from the Negro League that never got to play in the Major Leagues, and those were some of my favorites from the book. You get to learn so much about the discrimination they faced and how they handled it.It's also fascinating to see where everyone is ranked on the list, and I'm sure that is something that people will debate for years to come. There were definitely a few I thought should've been a bit lower than they were, but I'm sure there are some that didn't even make it on the list that people will be looking for.Overall, it's an outstanding book, and I'd recommend it to any sports fan! I give it 4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written and the author really knows baseball

5.0 out of 5 stars Honoring Legends Beyond the Major Leagues

What makes this book especially memorable is how Posnanski brings to life not only the familiar MLB legends but also the overlooked heroes of the Negro Leagues and international icons like Sadaharu Oh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Baseball Fans

c.p. · April 28, 2022

This book is a collection of one hundred short essays about the players the author ranks as the top 100 of all time.I learned a great deal about players i have seen all my life and about players i have only heard of. I also learned a great deal about the Negro Leagues. Great and fascinating information, although i felt the author spent an inordinate amount of time on the Negro Leagues and racism in baseball. Not that he wasn't right. Only that he seemed almost obsessive at times.Overall, this is a greatly informative and entertaining book. Very long, but well worth it. You can read it in small chunks to make it more manageable. Also, you can read from #100 to #1 (like i did), you can jump around as you choose or you can just read the articles about the players who interest you. Any way you choose to attack it though, if you like baseball, you’re gonna like this book👍👍

I thoroughly loved reading The Baseball 100. Wonderful writing on baseball’s greatest players. It’s celebrates the players and the game while also fully recognizing baseball’s history and all it should be shameful for. Filled with mind-blowing stats as well as the stories of incredible human beings (and controversial ones too). Would love to read it a second time.

Just Awesome

M.P. · December 20, 2021

Joe Posnanski is incredible. His knowledge of baseball is so vast, his ability to tell stories is such an incredible talent and they work in perfect harmony in this book.Joe has taught me so much about the history of the game through his books and this is no exception. As a jays fan it was great to read about a couple of the guys that played for us as well as many of the guys that played against us. Additionally I learned about the history and stories of the Negro Leagues and their value and importance in telling the story of this great game.Keep up the great work Joe and thank you for all the stories!

Good read

A magnum opus from acclaimed baseball writer Joe Posnanski, The Baseball 100 is an audacious, singular, and masterly book that took a lifetime to write. The entire story of baseball rings through a countdown of the 100 greatest players in history, with a foreword by George Will.

Longer than

Joe Posnanski is incredible. His knowledge of baseball is so vast, his ability to tell stories is such an incredible talent and they work in perfect harmony in this book.Joe has taught me so much about the history of the game through his books and this is no exception. As a jays fan it was great to read about a couple of the guys that played for us as well as many of the guys that played against us. Additionally I learned about the history and stories of the Negro Leagues and their value and importance in telling the story of this great game.Keep up the great work Joe and thank you for all the stories!

Good read
