The Gift: 14 Lessons to Save Your Life

Description:

“I will be forever changed by Edith Eger’s story.” —Oprah Winfrey

A practical and inspirational guide to stopping destructive patterns and imprisoning thoughts to find freedom and joy in life—now updated to address the challenges of the pandemic and a world in crisis.

World renowned psychologist and internationally bestselling author Edith Eger’s powerful
New York Times bestselling book The Choice told the story of her survival in the concentration camps, her escape, healing, and her journey to freedom. Readers around the world wrote to tell her how The Choice moved them and inspired them to confront their own past and try to heal their pain. They asked her to write another, more prescriptive book. Eger’s second book, The Gift, expands on her message of healing and provides a hands-on guide that gently encourages readers to change the thoughts and behaviors that may be keeping them imprisoned in the past.

Eger explains the worst prison she experienced is not the prison that Nazis put her in but the one she created for herself: the prison within her own mind. She describes the most pervasive imprisoning beliefs she has known—including fear, grief, anger, secrets, stress, guilt, shame, and avoidance—and the tools she has discovered to deal with these universal challenges. These lessons are offered through riveting and inspiring stories from her life and the lives of her patients.

This new, revised edition of
The Gift contains two new chapters that examine the invaluable insights and lessons Edie learned during the Covid-19 pandemic, a time she used to rediscover freedom even in lockdown and to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, including preparing and sharing meals with the ones we love. Edie includes recipes for some of her favorite dishes, which have been updated and tested by her daughter Marianne Engle, and explains how food can be a deep expression of love and connection.

As readers seek to find joy and some peace in these challenging times, Eger’s wisdom and heartfelt advice is as timely, and timeless, as ever and certain to resonate with Eger’s devoted readers and those who have not yet found her transformational wisdom.

Filled with empathy, insight, and humor,
The Gift captures the vulnerability and common challenges we all face and provides encouragement and advice for breaking out of our personal prisons to find healing and greater joy in life.

Praise for Dr. Edith Eger's THE CHOICE

“I’ll be forever changed by Dr. Eger’s story…
The Choice is a reminder of what courage looks like in the worst of times and that we all have the ability to pay attention to what we’ve lost, or to pay attention to what we still have.” -- Oprah Winfrey

"This book is partly a memoir and partly a guide to processing trauma. Eger was only sixteen years old when she and her family got sent to Auschwitz. After surviving unbelievable horrors, she moved to the United States and became a therapist. Her unique background gives her amazing insight, and I think many people will find comfort right now from her suggestions on how to handle difficult situations."

-- Bill Gates

“I can’t imagine a more important message for modern times. Eger’s book is a triumph, and should be read by all who care about both their inner freedom and the future of humanity.” -- Lori Gottlieb ―
New York Times Book Review

“Dr. Edith Eva Eger is my kind of hero. She survived unspeakable horrors and brutality; but rather than let her painful past destroy her, she chose to transform it into a powerful gift – one she uses to help others heal.” -- Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle

"
The Choice is a gift to humanity. One of those rare and eternal stories that you don't want to end and that leave you forever changed. Dr. Eger's life reveals our capacity to transcend even the greatest of horrors and to use that suffering for the benefit of others. She has found true freedom and forgiveness and shows us how we can as well." -- Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

This book is wonderful. It gave the reader something to think about. Here this woman has gone through he'll and returned a positive living person. She makes you think and you can't help but have gratitude for your own life. The recipes are what my grandmother made when I was growing up. You won't be disappointed when you get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read that imparts practical wisdom for mind and soul

v.f. · April 23, 2025

A great read that relates wisdom for the mind and soul as the gift we all have inside us, if only we practically apply it . Plus the author lets you immerse yourself in the culture a bit with her special recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Use Your Losses to Your Advantage

Z.R. · September 5, 2021

This is a memoir, how-to and just fun book on a subject that applies to all of us.Having survived the holocaust, Dr. Eger shows us how she struggled with forgiveness, being enough, and being the message of change. This is an "in-your-face" walk through so many of life's challenges that anticipate readers' resistances.I was impressed by her saying that when she asks all new patients, "What is something that you do too much of?" Discovering that, she tells readers is the beginning of discovering what's broken from within our psyche. While I'm sure that I will reread this book many times, few areas that I will especially pay attention to are:Page 128, she advises a patient, "The next time he tells you you're wrong your answer is: 'You're right.' He can't fight with that. And you're not lying, because everybody makes mistakes; anybody could improve. Just say, 'Yes, you're right.'""If we deny an accusation, we're still accepting blame."Page 132, she asks, "Would you like to be married to you?" This is followed with five questions that holds you accountable for your part in your relationship, and especially in your relationship with yourself.Page 174 - 176, "Hope is the conviction that you survived all that you survied so that you can be a good role model. An ambassador for freedom. A person who focuses not on what you've lost, but on what's still here for you, on the work you're called to do. There's always something to do.""Set a timer for ten minutes and make a list of as many things as you can think of that are better now than they were five years ago."I've never met Dr. Eger, I live minutes from her.But reading this book, witnessing what she has overcome and the decisions that she made to overcome those challenges, I believe, on one level, we have met.Thank you, for guiding me to new questions that guide me to travel deeper into my psyche.

5.0 out of 5 stars such an inspiration and fun enjoyable to read

L. · July 7, 2025

I may have a new hero. If only I didn’t cringe at the word hero. Maybe better said would be there’s a woman who has written two books that I would be honored to know and can daydream about being friends…. But really I just appreciate her words and insight and story telling ability very much and am grateful to her for writing it all down for all of us to take in and add to the depth of our own understanding and how we walk this earth each day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story but a bit repetitive

T.H. · October 23, 2024

I read this right after reading her first book (The Choice), and if you've already read that one then this one may seem a bit repetitive. I'm sure she wrote this one with the intention of reaching those who may not have read The Choice, but still, I found myself wanting more different information. Still a great book though... whereas The Choice is more of a memoir, The Gift has more practical, psychological points, so depending on what you're looking for you may enjoy one or the other more and not need to read both.

Excellent book! A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlocking our mental prisons

J. · September 9, 2022

There are only two shelves of keepers on my bookcase and The Gift has earned permanent lodging on one. After surviving Auschwitz, herded by ruthless Nazis on a death march as Allies approached, and left for dead in a field of corpses, Dr. Eger was miraculously discovered and rescued by American soldiers. Yet, she came to believe that the lifelong mental prisons we create for ourselves are the most damaging. In The Gift, the author focuses on 12 of the most common, dedicating a chapter to each, which can be read sequentially or separately, reading and rereading each one as needed. Embedded within are many words of wisdom, rare jewels worth remembering such as: "To heal doesn't mean to get over it, but it does mean that we are able to be wounded and whole, to find happiness and fulfillment in our lives, despite our loss." Ultimately, the real gift is Edith Eger herself, who at 94 is a true national treasure who teaches us how to endure, to have compassion for others and ourselves, and to live life with joie de vivre.

Wonderful lessons to survive in life. I think I read it when I needed it most and it was terrific experience of journey with the book.

She hit the nail on the head!

J. · June 29, 2023

If you’re someone that has been through trauma after trauma and yet has had a difficult time finding help, this book can offer some tools for relief.I have found that therapists and psychologists often lack empathy and do things by the book. They sit with a checklist and evaluate you as a medical file instead of seeing you as a person with real trauma, hurts or areas of being underdeveloped due to fear or coping mechanisms.Edith is someone who can speak with authority to people that have suffered and need to overcome from their mental prisons. She is compassionate, knowledgeable and she has lived her journey of healing.I wish that I could have coffee with her and glean from her wisdom. This is as close as I’ll get.I just read the first chapter on victimhood and I swear it was like having an intensive emotional breakthrough and therapist appointment in one. She hit the nail on the head. It’s a small book but not a fast read. Take it slow. Be honest with yourself while reading it.
