Historian Dave Wooddell has followed his Civil War triumph with yet another fine 19th-century tome....this time illustrated. For anyone who grew up in the age of steam-drawn trains (which I am glad I did), you will find this volume to be a delightful exploration of how technically we harnessed heated water and created the transportation aspect of the industrial revolution. Bravo!

Good collection of drawings originally published in 19th century engineering journals. Wooddell has organized them into chapters by decade. There is no extensive text, simply captions giving basic information about each locomotive. And index at the back directs the reader to the original publication for each illustration. Locomotives are a mix of European and American designs and are an excellent source for understanding the development of the steam locomotive in its first century.
