Shards

Description:

Shards by William Bortz is a book of poetry that navigates the hurt of the past and how those fragments spill into present daily life while offering respite to both the writer and the reader. The collection does less mourning for hurt and more seeking amends with all of the shattered pieces: offering the reader hope that in brokenness there is reconciliation. This trend is most present in the poem ‘War’. Author Bortz shows no condemnation for the father who passed the war onto him, only acknowledgement. In this key paradigm shift, we see the hope that the author beseeches us to grasp onto: honesty begets forgiveness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and Unexpected

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I love a book of poems that you can pick up and thumb through, finding something new and surprising each time. These poems are lovely glimpses into someone who is wise beyond his years. Will Bortz has an uncanny knack for putting words together. I am a sucker for unexpected descriptions, metaphors, similes (English teacher/word nerd!) and I find so many charming combinations here! The great thing about this poetry is you find yourself relating to him and wanting to read more. And reread. A poem you want to reread as soon as you’re done reading is usually a good one!I’d highly encourage anyone who appreciates genuine writing to check this one out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich with meaning and energy.

I loved Will’s other book, “Lately I’ve been drinking alone” (I wrote a review on that one too) and what’s awesome is that “Shards” is a totally different feel. It’s deeper in a very different sense, sometimes more romantic, sometimes richer in its emotive description. I also LOVED the pieces on nature. Which was a serendipitous experience, bringing it into the woods with me to read on the lake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book

Shards is the beautiful & reflective journey of William Bortz. These poems feel like peace and a cup of warm, fragrant tea on a rainy afternoon. Will writes stunning pieces about love, loss, and healing with so many stand-out lines:“I lie my head/ on the bedrock of/ necessary change/ and become the strongest/ thing that has ever been/ so silent.”Highly recommend.
