“One of Renkl’s skills as a writer is to transfer her ability to perceive the nuances of the natural world, things most of us overlook, onto the page. In The Comfort of Crows . . . her powers of perception are on full display. . . . Paying attention to the living things in her backyard helps her cope with climate change, political strife and cultural upheaval—and she hopes it will help the reader, too.”—New York Times
“[A] beautiful tangle of human and other-animal lives . . . Starting in winter and continuing through the seasonal round, Renkl brings alive in 52 chapters her love for the animals and plants in her half-acre yard in Tennessee and in nearby parks. Equally moving, she confesses her despair at the human-caused crises the natural world faces, and her determination not to sit idle.”—NPR.org
“Above all, The Comfort of Crows is a full-throated ode to the hopefulness of regeneration. . . . It is a paean not just to the natural world, but to paying attention and doing one’s bit to nurture it. . . . The Comfort of Crows is beautifully enhanced by 52 lavish, full-color illustrations by Billy Renkl, the author’s brother. His lush, multilayered drawings of spiders, hummingbirds and pileated woodpeckers shown in both natural and unnatural habitats evoke Asian scrolls, collages and intriguing exercises in perspective.”—Wall Street Journal
"The Comfort of Crows is a howling love letter to the world, the story of what we’ve lost and what we can save and the abundance of wonder in our own backyard. Margaret Renkl is a singular, spectacular writer, and this book, like life itself, is a cause for celebration.”—Ann Patchett, author of The Dutch House
“Reading Margaret Renkl always connects me more deeply to the natural world and to my own heart. The Comfort of Crows is an elegy, a provocation, and above all a love letter to the magnificence that still surrounds us, if only we are awake enough to look. I want to press it into the hands of everyone I know.”—Dani Shapiro, author of Inheritance
“Whether describing bluebird nests or her own empty one, Renkl is part poetic prophet, part your down-home friend. In essays adorned by her brother’s art, she meditates on family, loss and nature under siege. ‘The world is full of song,’ she writes—wake up and listen!”—People
“Contains enough beauty, heartache and hope to fill a Russian novel . . . I am a big fan of good nature writing, and Renkl is among the best at it. I’m still marveling at the way she rhapsodizes over a toad, describing it as being ‘as soft as a great-grandmother you can hold in your hand.’”—Atlanta Journal-Constitution
“The Comfort of Crows is [Renkl’s] best yet. Quietly, poetically, she writes of the natural cycle of a year in her backyard, as well as of her own passage into the final third of her life. . . . Many a plant or creature inspires Renkl’s appreciation, and as a result, our own. It is possible that after reading this deceptively simple, charming book, you will plant a chair in a . . . backyard and discover things you’ve never seen before. And what could be more buoying than that?”—Minneapolis Star-Tribune
“Margaret Renkl has the mind of a naturalist and the soul of a poet. Let this magnificent devotional be your eye-opening, heart-expanding daily companion, and it will change how you see the world.”—Mary Laura Philpott, author of Bomb Shelter
“This is a lovely prayer book centered on plants and animals, an important reminder of grace and of the necessity of placing public green spaces in reach of everyone.”—Catherine Raven, author of Fox & I
“Infused with empathy, The Comfort of Crows reminds us to treasure the living beings who surround us with each breath we take. Renkl’s insights root us within our world. . . . The book can be read straight through or stretched across the calendar as a weekly literary devotional. Billy Renkl’s stunning collages provide an invitation to meditate, to pray, to breathe.”—BookPage (starred review)
“Luminous . . . Elegant, lucid essays follow the changing seasons, Renkl musing on the migratory and nesting patterns of birds, the encroaching effects of climate change, her own evolving family structure, and the incremental shifts of flora, fauna, and light. . . . The Comfort of Crows celebrates the beauty and durability of nature’s age-old cycles and the habits of wild creatures, and it urges human beings to care for these same creatures—before some of them disappear altogether.”—Shelf Awareness
“Renkl invites readers along on a year of loving outdoor observations in this gently moving memoir. . . . This gorgeous reflection on humanity’s symbiotic relationship with the outdoors will transform the way readers interact with their own backyards.”—Publishers Weekly
“This triumph of a book gives us a charming and wise friend to guide us over the course of a year, but I am certain Margaret Renkl’s enchanting voice will echo for lifetimes to come. The Comfort of Crows is an instant classic, not just for the planet, but—and most importantly—for our hearts too.”—Aimee Nezhukumatathil, author of World of Wonders
“Insightful . . . Among the touching and relatable moments that nature lovers will appreciate are Renkl’s memories of catching tadpoles in spring with her brother as a child in Alabama, the sound of summer thunderstorms and cicadas, and the unparalleled beauty of autumn light, ‘the loveliest light there is’. . . . A welcome escape from the hectic world.”—Kirkus
“Sprinkled liberally throughout are ‘praise songs’ . . . These little extras, just like the epigrams at the beginning of each essay, pack an extra punch into this tidy volume. . . . Readers can return to these pages often, through the seasons of their own lives.”—Booklist

5.0 out of 5 stars CROWS ARE SO INTELLIGENT
I ordered this book, I enjoy reading these essays, memories and love of life. For some time there were crows all around my neighborhood. I heard their caw, cawing. Now they are gone somewhere else, These crows are so intelligent, know much about their world. They are so big and noisy they frighten the smaller songbirds.I can't say enough about Mrs. Renkl's book even though parts are sad, but true. The book contains what goes on in one year in Margaret Renkl's backyard and in a rented cabin on the Cumberland Plateau. The book goes over the four seasons from Winter until Autumn. There aremany lovely pictures through the book by Mrs. Renkl's brother Billy Renkl, an artist. These pictures bring readers into the world of nature. The book, beautifully written and worded, is sad, tells of time long passed, people long gone, children who are now grownups. What once was and what is now.Mother Nature will do whatever she wants though so many do not agree. People keep fighting against her. Mrs. Renkl agrees with Nature. She loves all the natural world around her in Tennessee as she loved being a child in southern Alabama and being surrounded by nature where she could run free and get to know trees, flowers, everything else she could about what she loves. She hasn't changed. She loves the tiny creatures and does what she do to help them survive. She is their friend, as they are hers.Mrs. Renkl's mother loved nature and taught her daughter to love and respect the natural world as she did. Margaret learned well.As for dying leaves, they make good food for growing other trees.Winter, cold and dark, still beautiful when the land goes to sleep, closes down.Spring when the land wakes up and everything begins to grow, to come alive.Summer, hot and sleepy. Then comes the most beautiful season of the year, Autumn, when everything is so bright, leaves so colorful, fall, he air is cool and crisp.I am glad I did read this book. It makes me so happy. Get out in nature and enjoy.I still don't like what is being taken away from future generations. they need nature and wild country to enjoy and care about.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful book in words and pictures.
This is a wonderful book, superbly written and illustrated. It encourages readers to observe more wisely and so with greater pleasure. It ranges from profundity to humor in lovely, fluid prose as it remarks on events week by week through the year, tracing light, weather, plants, animals and even bits of human life.
4.0 out of 5 stars love of nature
This was a good read. Best for a person that loves nature. I have a similar relationship with the life in my yard as the author does in hers. There are ups and downs in nature as in human life. Not everyone pays attention to the details as Margaret does. Very nice!Love the artwork. I had to snoop online , I believe the artist is Margaret’s brother. Beautiful work!!
5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Book for an Imperfect Natural World
This short book, containing one essay for each week of the year beginning with winter, few if any longer than three pages, can be read in a sitting, but should anyone breeze through it they will likely find themselves going back over it at least one more time. A few of the essays take time to sink in, and the book as a whole should be allotted that time.I had read numerous reviews, all favorable, but none convinced me that the book wouldn't be too Venus-y for my Martian palate - until one appeared in, of all places, my local newspaper and suggested there would be much more to it than the typical "Today I saw a redbird, and it was beautiful." Upon acquiring the book I first noticed the gorgeous illustrations, all done by the author's brother, but other than that the text, if only at first, reminded me of a similar "diary of the natural year" written by a late friend - pleasant enough, even sharp-eyed in places, but not particularly compelling or thought-provoking.Which is why this book is worth reading twice - as, it turned out, was my friend's. And the two readings should occur one right after the other, which I suspected I needed to do. Gradually the real messages of the 52 essays emerged, and they were not always pretty. Many lack happy endings, others are bittersweet at best. Among other things the author confronts not only her own aging but the concomitant loss of seasonal variation and reliability, the homogenization of wild species, the erasure of history and historical ways of living, and the infuriating complacency with which most Americans appear to accept - ignore - the damage we do to the environment even by mere inaction. This has consequences of global importance, but at the neighborhood level too.Human behavior, ranging from the poisoning of lawns to overdevelopment, and even including the author's occasional carelessness (however well-intentioned) can have tragic results. Death, from relatives and friends to baby birds, is a constant presence among the beauty and (often) humor of her observations - and yet it's an essential component of nature, red in tooth and claw.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, lovely and thoughtful book
One of my all-time favorites. I’ve shared my recommendation with several others who have told me later how much they enjoyed it. If you enjoy being out in your yard or garden, or even just observing your slice of nature through the window, I think you’ll enjoy this book.
3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty book
The essays are well constructed, though a bit depressing. The book is heavily illustrated with gorgeous color plates.
5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books ever
I’m so happy I read this amazing book, especially now with all the uncertainty we are living with. It is more than a book about a garden in Tennessee. It covers climate disasters and the effects it is having on people, plants and all manner of wild life. There is lots of great advice for our gardens, but even better advice on how to improve our lives, help the environment and to not give up.
5.0 out of 5 stars Such a beautiful book!
I just love this book! The writing is wonderful -- thoughtful, moving, lyrical. The book itself is a work of art -- heavy paper, beautiful print, gorgeous illustrations, feels wonderful in the hand and even smells good. This is a physical book of the highest quality. I love my Kindle books, but this book was meant to be held.
So beautifully written!
If you haven't read these words, pick up this book right now and I mean right now!!
Amazing read
I love every part of this book and it made me think about the environment around me. Well written book.
Amazing Book!!!!
Comfort of Crows" isn’t the type of book I’d usually pick up, but it turned out to be amazing. It’s a beautiful meditation on the changing seasons in nature, filled with vivid and colorful illustrations that bring the content to life. The book is divided into 52 chapters, one for each week of the year, making it a perfect companion throughout the seasons. This is definitely a book that’s better enjoyed as a hard copy rather than an audiobook or e-reader. Highly recommend for nature lovers and anyone seeking a thoughtful, reflective read.
A great book at the lowest possible price
A fantastic book for poetry and nature lovers. It is the closest thing to Mary Oliver’s poetry I’ve found.
