Great book

5.0 out of 5 stars I know some 35-year-olds that can benefit from reading this book!

J. · April 28, 2020

I read this to my daughters last night. I thought this might be pretty heavy material for a toddler but mine are kindergarteners so I wanted to introduce them. This is put in pretty simple terms but there were definitely explanations that went into each page. It gave us room to talk about the Constitution and the supreme Court and of course, RGB.It seemed to keep their interest and they liked the fact that there were pictures of the White House and the capital. They also found it hilarious that the president was sitting on top of the White House. It went on to explain again in simple terms, the three branches of government and what each of them was responsible for. Honestly, I know some thirty five-year-olds that could stand to read this book. I wish that I had had it before even kindergarten so I could have put it in the old rotation of books I find important. It held their interest, and had a lesson, my favorite kind of books. Great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction

This is a great introductory overview of the United States' government.(If I was the editor/author,) I think I probably would have skipped the (two) pages about the origins of the country and replaced them with a couple of pages addressing the roles of the military and police--since two people in those uniforms are shown on the first two-page spread, but not mentioned in any of the book's text.Overall, this is a good book for very young kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby like book with words for older kids

S.H. · May 10, 2020

I think the concept makes a great simple book for kids for something that they'll need to know in life. I remembered being asked in high school about the 3 branches of government and what they do. I read this to my 3 and 6 year old who had asked questions while reading. My 6 year olds first thought when he looked at it that it was a book for his 3 year old sister. The illustrations of the people, labeled baby's big world, and the small hard cover gives that vibe. Younger kids that are thinking they are getting big that don't like "baby things" might not be attracted to this book. We will continue to read it to our 6 year old and explain why the author and illustrator may have presented this book the way they did.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Information Gaps

A.f.E. · April 26, 2020

This book itself is a nice solid board book and the pages open fully so the book lays flat. The illustrations are cute since all of the people in the book are babies. I've seen board books that have quite a bit of text inside of them, but this one is the kind that has very sparse text with only 1 short sentence per page. The pages included in the listing images are really the only pages in the books with any worthwhile picture/text content. I ordered the book based off of those pages shown, expecting the rest of the book to be like that, but the rest falls pretty flat.A lot of the pages are pretty weak and very vague. It goes right from some pilgrims on a ship traveling to the "New World" to saying "The people decided to be an independent nation" , but it never gives any reference to what the New World or the Independent Nation is. It says the Constitution and that it is the laws of the land, but it it never says what a law is. This is written with babies and small children in mind, but it leaves a lot of new terms that would be confusing to kids undefined. Being geared for the youngest, it could have easily included something to relate a law to rules, or some concept that a child could relate to. Without something to relate it to, the concept remains extremely abstract. This books is very hard to determine who this is appropriate for. Board books are typically suggested for newborn to 3 year olds. This book is above and beyond understanding for a baby, but really lacking in content for a 3 year old. Expect to be filling in a tremendous amount of information if you read this book to your kid.
