I own a 1/8 scale live steam locomotive and I can’t wait to put these practices to use next spring. I haven’t read the entire book yet, but what I have read is both educational and fascinating.

It's a reprint of one company's practical manual on firing locomotives. It doesn't give a lot of background or detail, but it's an interesting book.

A good reference. A must-read for steam train fans.I have worked on old steam trains myself; so I know that this kind of book is essential, if you want tosurvive the experience of actually firing & operating a coal-fired engine. It ain’t easy; and it ain’t safe.

A Reprint of Firing Instructions in the USA 1947
A USA reprint from about 1947 for the Pennsylvanian Railway Company for their engineers. A very useful source of practical information about firing. If you are working on a Heritage railway in the UK you'll find this very interesting and it will up your firing techniques and understanding. I'll knock off one star as its very USA orientated and after all, just a reprint, so no effort to write a 2016 commentary on what this was like then and what we have learned and applied since those days.
