Teamwork Isn't My Thing, and I Don't Like to Share (Best Me I Can Be)

Description:

TEAM stands for Together Everyone Achieves More!

Share this story with kids in grades K though 6 before assigning the next group project! Strengthen social and emotional learning and help kids learn to interact with each other in positive and constructive ways. Four simple steps each for using the social skills of teamwork and sharing are presented in rhyme so they are easy for listeners to recall when needed.

RJ’s having another bad day. His teacher wants him to work with Bossy Bernice, Messy Frankie, and Norma the Booger Picker on a report about Egyptian mummies. After a frustrating school day with his “team,” RJ goes home to find only one cookie left in the jar - and his mom makes him share it with his sister! With the help of his coach, RJ learns that working as a team and sharing are skills needed not just on the soccer field, but in school and at home too!

This is the fourth storybook in Julia Cook’s BEST ME I Can Be! book series, which teaches children that social skills can make home life happier and school more successful. The skills are part of the Boys Town Education Model® that has improved student behavior and classroom climates in hundreds of schools across the country. Many of the same techniques can also be found in the strategies that comprise Boys Town's Common Sense Parenting® program. Tips for parents and educators to effectively teach working as a team, sharing with others, and showing graciousness are included at the end of the picture book.

This was a great book to start the year with for teaching teamwork. A lot of kids don’t know how to work together but this book was a great read to the class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to teach about teamwork

I used this with 5year old to help him with building teamwork and character. I read it to him and we came up with ways to help others and build character. I think it can be used as a teaching tool and therapy tool during sessions. Both parents and therapist can align and use this book to teach kids about unhealthy behaviors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good message and talking points

I use this book with my 5 year old when he is being cooperative with others. I am a first grade teacher so j use it with my students as well. Good message and talking points. Social stories through picture books help children relate to the characters and situations better than traditional parent or teacher lecturing.

Julia Cook does a great job in showing and explain how to hand the teamwork situations. I have a couple of Julia 's books and will eventually add more to my collection. I read this book to my class. I thought it made a big difference in the classroom. Rj is a character who can see his decisions are not benefiting him and he learns to see there are other positive options.

One of my favorite authors. Julia Cook has these books that teach lessons that we encounter on a daily basis in our classrooms but puts a funny spin to it so the children really enjoy the story. When it comes from a "kid" perspective, they seem to understand and relate alot more.

My students enjoyed the book but the lesson of teamwork and sharing in this book was minimal . They didn't do the greatest job of connecting the two things but I was able to supplement it to make sense to the students.

Julia Cook's books are great! My students enjoy listening to them and they are helpful in sparking conversation about difficult topics. I would say they are probably most effective for kids under the age of 10. Although I use them with some of my older students as conversation starters they do tend to find them a bit babyish. I would definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for 1st and second grade!

Was surprised by how engaged they were. Thought it would be too “babyish” for my too cool for school kids. But they were all engaged and love the whole series !

My 6 year old loves these books. I was unsure if he would resist these 'lesson' books, but perhaps because he can relate so closely to them, he really enjoys the stories. I have bought a bunch of Julia Cook books, and he asks for them regularly for his nightly reading.
