1.0 out of 5 stars Manufacture defect, bad batch, or bad quality control?
Maybe the book I had received was part of a manufacture defective batch, but I was unaware of this until now as didn't need the book for class until this week even though I've ordered it on Augst 26th. From August 26 to Wednesday of this past week, the book had remainded in it's cellophane wrapping and on my kitchen table untouched until I needed it this past Wednesday. You could imagine my surprise when I opened the first chapter section of the book and came to find that the binding was very poorly done; the quality was quite unprofessional. Usually with textbooks regardless if they are hardback or paper back, the paper binding is sewn and then covered in high quality pvc binding kind of glue completely throughout the spine. Some companies even do several coats of this in it's process making as to make sure the pages will not fall out upon multiple uses. Unfortunately that was not the case with the book I received. For me, the paper binding was clearly not sewn and instead had been deceived to looked like it was sewn when it in fact wasn't (there was an indication of sewn hole punctures throughout the binding area of the pages but it was very clear that there were no sewn thread keeping the pages together/ intacted thus providing a secure binding and a prevention of the paper falling out within use). Additionally you could see that only certain sections of glue was used and the glue was blobed on instead of smoothly painted down the spine of the book binding to keep the pages from falling out in the binding process and within use. There were a total of four medium size blobs of glue (about the size of a dime in diameter for each blob) in sections down the spine and they were located relatively close together (approx .5" apart) in the middle section of the spine. Furthermore, there was no glue at either edges of the spine to help keep the bottom and top sections of each page throughout the book secured to the spine. When I opened the book I checked to see if the binding at the top and bottom edges would be able to hold up but quickly learned within my first use that they would not and started seeing the page slowly fall out within a light turn of the first few pages. I did look at the later chapters as I noticed they looked a bit more secure in its binding, but I still don't trust that it will hold. I've worked on assembly lines formanufacturing company before so I'm well aware that if it's costly to throw away a bad batch of product then what most manufactuers will do is sell it anyways and take the risk of consumers reporting a manufacture defect instead of eating the cost and reproducing the product to meet quality control/distribution guidelines. I figured this is what occurred with my poorly produced book. Besides the poor binding, I also noticed that the print of the text was a bit off and not aligned correctly as can be seen in the images provided for this review. The chapter cover clearly shows this as you can see its blue but then theres this line of white at the edge as if the alignment for the printing was off. Finally at one section of my book, I noticed it looked like perhaps I got a used book that was redistributed as new and put in cellophane wrap to make it look new. All in all, I know that I got a mixture of a manufacture defective batch and a used book because there is writing in pen and pencil on two of the later chapters and it also looks like whoever owned it prior to me used erassible highlighters and erased whatever they highlighted but it didn't do as good of a job as they thought because my eyes could still see a slight discoloration of the pages. I should also mention that I'm certain that the person who got this book prior to me noticed it was defective in the binding and tried repairing it themselves in which perhaps the seller didn't take notice to it. In conclusion, for $76, I certainly shouldn't have had all these problems with a book that I paid for as new! If the seller is seeing this I would personally like a full refund back please and thank you. Until then I will keep this review as a 1 star and up it to 3.5 if I am able to get a full refund back from the seller given I still fall within the return period!
