Pilgrim (Revised) (Revised)

Description:

In this collection, David Whyte looks at the great questions of human life through the eyes of the pilgrim: someone passing through relatively quickly, looking for the biggest context they can find or imagine, someone dependent on friendship, hospitality and help from friends and strangers alike, someone who has to ask for visible and invisible help. A pilgrim is someone up for adventure and good company. One of the central themes of a pilgrimage is internal resilience, the necessity for following a certain star not seen or perceived by anyone else, an internal migration running parallel to the outer road, keeping the journey in the world relevant and true. There is a necessity for hardiness, for shelter, for risk, for companionship, for vulnerability; for creating a more beautiful mind. Above all, a pilgrimage requires us to ask for help, to develop an ability to recognize when it is being offered, and the humor, humility and open hands to receive it.

About the Author

Poet David Whyte grew up with a strong, imaginative influence from his Irish mother among the hills and valleys of his father's Yorkshire. He now makes his home, with his family, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

The author of seven books of poetry and three books of prose, David Whyte holds a degree in Marine Zoology and has traveled extensively, including living and working as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos Islands and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions in the Andes, the Amazon and the Himalaya. He brings this wealth of experience to his poetry, lectures and workshops.

His life as a poet has created a readership and listenership in three normally mutually exclusive areas: the literate world of readings that most poets inhabit, the psychological and theological worlds of philosophical enquiry and the world of vocation, work and organizational leadership.

An Associate Fellow at Templeton College and Said Business School at the University of Oxford, he is one of the few poets to take his perspectives on creativity into the field of organizational development, where he works with many European, American and international companies. In spring of 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Neumann College, Pennsylvania.

In organizational settings, using poetry and thoughtful commentary, he illustrates how we can foster qualities of courage and engagement; qualities needed if we are to respond to today s call for increased creativity and adaptability in the workplace. He brings a unique and important contribution to our understanding of the nature of individual and organizational change particularly through his perspectives on Conversational Leadership.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical poetry at its best

I have read other books of poetry by David Whyte, and enjoyed those too. Curious about how he would write about the Camino, which I too have traveled, I bought this volume of his work. Enchanting stories from his life populate the pages. I recommend it for anyone who likes the play of words in a poem, and especially if you know of the Camino.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gift of Poetry and Poets

T.A. · July 8, 2013

David Whyte's poetry is a must-read for me. I was excited to hear he had a new book out along with an accompanying CD. Hearing his read his poems, and talk about he story behind their writing is a wonderful experience. My husband, who never liked poetry, until he heard David Whyte speak said that if every high school had a poet like David Whyte talk about poetry that everyone would love poetry. I concur.

This is a wonderful collection of poems - thoughtful, reflective, and embracing of the pilgrimages we all find ourselves on. My introduction to them was on a companion audio CD where David Whyte gave a commentary on the background to the poems - it is profound!

I was lamenting to my sister one day that I missed the writers, essayists and poets of our youth. She told me of David and sent a video of him reciting an excerpt of his "Opening of Eyes." It certainly opened my eyes.Pilgrim is the first work of David's I've purchased. I enjoyed it and felt an ancient kindred with the spirit of his work. I'd like to thank David for the beauty and promise he has revealed to me and highly recommend this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars His words are royal

T.E. · November 7, 2012

David Whyte draws expression from words the way Arthur drew the sword from the stone. I highly recommend this and other poetry by Whyte. For a more deeply introspective approach to work, your mate and the self try the Three Marriages by Whyte. You will not be disappointed.
