40 Years with a Whistle: Life Lessons from the Field of Play

Description:

40 Years with a Whistle—40 years of coaching tips woven into a touching memoir of a coach's life

Dan John has been performing as an athlete for six decades. His coaches—the mentors he describes in this book—steered him on the narrow path toward success in both sports and life. These coaches emphasized performance, yes...but they all also insisted on the balance of health, fitness and longevity.

From Dan's introduction to
40 Years with a Whistle:

I’ve learned a lot over those decades and would like to share these lessons with you. I didn’t want a book filled with “Xs” and “Os” or sets and reps. I wanted to share the lessons that apply to life and living.

I begin with what are clearly my 10 best lessons of coaching. Each of these works well for the teacher, student, parent and neighbor too. Following the advice of the 10th lesson, I explore the stories of the people who shaped my career and the gems of advice they shared with me. I finish with my vision of coaching—basically looking at training from the big picture and the toolkit to allow one to succeed.

The lessons are simple. The application is difficult. The rewards are worth everything.

The lessons learned on the fields and in the gyms will lead to a successful life. Hop on board.

“As I read through this book, over and over I found myself mentally saying, 'Yup' and 'Absolutely.' If you’re a coach, an athletic administrator or the parent of a school-age athlete, you need to read this book. I know my coaching staff will be reading it.”
~ Chris Long, Athletic Director, Juan Diego Catholic High School

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid advice, as usual

In the world of strength and conditioning experts, Dan John stands out as one who knows what he is talking about. The summer between high school and college, John went from a lean 162 to a lean 202 through weight training to prepare for college sports. In the decades since then, Mr. John has continued to train, not only himself, but countless others. He’s coached as long as this reviewer has been alive, and at a high level. And he continues to compete in weight lifting, throwing, highland games, and anything else that strikes his fancy. To say he “competes” is only part of the story. He continues to win and set records at an age when most men do little more than watch their grand kids play soccer.Mr. John, though, is no meat head. He has several master’s degrees. He’s taught economics and theology. He thinks like a philosopher, and he’s a great communicator. Whether in training or teaching, he has that rare ability to simplify. He can cut through the clutter and get to the main thing without getting distracted by the new or the shiny.Any time I read anything Mr. John wrote, I feel like I’ve become a bit better. He’s the man every man wants as a mentor.Reading this book was no exception. I enjoyed reading John’s insights gained from competition, coaching, and teaching. If you are interested in football or strength sports as a competitor, coach, or parent, you’ll enjoy and benefit from this book.40 Years with a Whistle is not a how to book, though. If you are looking for training routines, you won’t find them here. Instead, John discusses principles and insights. If you want him to tell you exactly what to do, Mass Made Simple or a similar book will be a better choice. His programs are so good, he guarantees them to work:“If you fail on my Mass Made Simple program—you eat all of that food and you do all of those squats—and you don’t put on any body mass, you can come punch me if you’d like.”But the sets and reps and peanut butter sandwiches aren’t what make the programs work. The principles behind these programs make them work, and those are what you’ll find in 40 Years with a Whistle. And by the way, I don’t recommend punching Dan John.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome insights, philosophies, and observations

I love Dan John's work because of the humor, perspective, and keen insights that he brings to (what can often be) a very complex and overwhelming subject matter, strength and conditioning. He has a talent for cutting through the clutter and bringing the important things into focus. While many authors in the field seem to celebrate complexity, Dan excels at simplifying concepts and boiling stuff down to the essentials. Any of his books are a great read for someone who feels swamped and confused by the surplus of information about exercise. I started reading Dan's works because he offers rock solid training advice. I kept reading them because they are just plain fun to read and very entertaining. This latest book is no exception and it contains many awesome pearls of wisdom that were earned over the course of a long and extraordinary career in coaching and education.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but...

I enjoy Dan's writing, but having read several of his books and many of his articles I could have written this one myself by cutting and pasting from the others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Dan John

A.C. · May 23, 2019

If you're familiar with Dan John's work, there won't be many surprises here. What you get is great advice for coaching, training and living, written in a clear, concise language. No "complicate to profit" here.Sure, I've read some of the stuff before, but there's really not that much "new" in coaching or strength training. Still, Dan John always reminds me of some things that worked so well I stopped doing them, and teaches me some new things.Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Skills For Longevity

This book is an another in the long line of excellent works of literature by Dan John. If you are interested in quality of life, Dan John can tell you how. The problem is it won't be flashy or trendy, it will be based on the fundamentals and training your body as one piece. This book is a great summary of the role that great coaches/mentors play in all of our lives. How they make a difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dan John work yet

L.T. · January 14, 2021

I have only read about four of Dan John’s books, but I have read many of his articles published on various websites. 40 years is definitely an example of someone who has reached mastery in writing and being able to communicate concepts about life and coaching.

K.C. · June 24, 2020

Elegant: pleasingly ingenious and simpleI am forever returning to Dan's books and ideas. When I do I often realise that I did not actually come up with the things I am doing by myself but rather a seed had been planted. I love his books but he also has a podcast on youtube which is a fantastic resource.

Awesome! Thanks Dan.
