5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for lab
I use this for my chemistry lab. I love this manual, the carbon copy always comes out perfect and it keeps me organized. I will be buying this again for my next chem lab and my bio lab!
5.0 out of 5 stars good quality
I prefer the binded edge instead of the spiral notebook style due to the increase in viability. only complaint is the page used to prevent transfer is about an inch too short on the left side. not too much of an issue though
5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE
For those who don't need the thicker lab notebook, it had the perfect number of pages for two semesters of chemistry labs and then some.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the left-handed scientist ... and the student
I use these for data collection and keeping track of my research while working in the lab. I understand that they're for students, but having the duplication function means that I can pull the original, scan it, brainstorm with it, fax it, whatever I want to do - and I still have the duplicate with the raw objective data. It's a bit like having a notebook with a built-in restore point. Anyone who's done this stuff for any length of time knows that the scientific process is not linear. Sometimes you need to go back in time and tweak an experimental parameter. A duplicating notebook lets you do just that.So here's a few advantages of this notebook over the one I used in college:- First and foremost: NO BINDING RING! If you're left-handed, these things do nothing more than entertain those around you as you try and figure out how best to write in them. What surprised me was that because of the binding ring, my handwriting had to get larger to compensate for the lack of control, and I used more paper as a result. Now, my handwriting is still legible, but 25% smaller than before. Which translates to: more data on the page. That brings me to my second point: This one is less than half the size of the 100 page bound version. Easier to carry, easier to use, and let's be honest, it's just a cleaner looking notebook. Which brings me to my third pointThis notebook has the duplicates with the perforations, not the originals. The 100 page organic chemistry lab manual for some inexplicable reason had the perforations on the original, which meant after you turned them into the instructor, you were left staring at the yellow copy and trying to decipher the organic structure of a molecule vs the smudge made when you rested your pen against the paper. I never understood why the Organic Chem lab notebook did that, but this one didn't.So yes, this will work for any university (or high school) chemistry student. And any scientist who works on NSF grant-related research. (Your work will be audited, so a duplicating notebook is very useful in that regard. Plus, you can't take your laptop with you into the NMR facility, that is if you like your laptop.)And it's about 2/3 the price of the one in your university book store. ($18.99 for the 100 pg version vs $11.99 for this one.) So win win win.A couple of tips if this is your first carbon duplicating notebook:Felt Tip Pens aren't your friends in these. They won't replicate. Ball-point or gel-pens only. (I use Pilot V2s or my Fisher space pen, but that's personal preference). If you forget to put the divider behind your duplicate, you can expect that you'll write through about 5-7 pages of your notebook, depending on your pen and pressure.(It'll be repeated to you ad nauseum, but it's important) No pencil, and no erasing! (That'll get you fired, it's fraud.) If you make a mistake, put a line through it (no scratching) and then initial and date.Write legibly and clearly. While this may seem like just another tedious exercise in ensuring you didn't just come into lab to see things get blown up, the fact is that those professors are your best opportunity for internships, grants, and letters of recommendation. And if you're the guy or girl who's notebook has to be taken to the languages department for deciphering, you're not going to leave a favorable impression on them. If you want a job in the scientific community, you need to have clear, well-maintained, and truthful data. I personally know of two world-reknowned chemistry professors who will NOT take you on as a research associate if they cannot read and easily understand your laboratory notebook. If you're a new graduate looking for work, your laboratory notebook is also a great tool to set you apart from your competitors. A good lab notebook allows a reviewer to reconstruct your experiment without you being present. And that brings us up to the last point -Be timely in your writing. Write what you observe and what you see as it happens. If a reaction causes a color change, describe it and the allotted time. If it was supposed to happen and it didn't, write that. If the introduction of 1.92 mL of 1M HCL reduces the pH of your NaOAC buffer when the calculations you did showed it should've been 3.92 mL of 1M HCL - you need to write that. Because if you forget to do so, and someone picks up your lab notebook and uses your calculations, it's not going to work. Lab notebooks are one of the first places chemists go back to when there are problems. (in the example above, someone accidentally mislabeled a 2M HCl as 1M, which would've destroyed a lot of useful work. The accurate data and calculations in my lab notebook made it possible to determine that it was the acid, not my titration that was the issue) A contaminated reagent may cause protein assays to all to come out too strongly, invalidating the data. But without accurate record-keeping, it could take weeks to find the culprit. And that could cost your lab time and money. And possibly, it could cost you your job. This may seem long and a waste of reading, and even like common sense. But in a community where the only way your work matters is if it's repeatable by another scientist, you need to have accurate and timely data. And while I love technology as much as the next guy, my lab notebook never has run out of battery, and my pen has never gotten a virus. Sometimes, old school is still the best.
5.0 out of 5 stars More than meets expectations
Used this style of lab report notebook for first time with 2018-2019 college level chemistry taught at high school. Easy for students to use; inclusion of periodic table as page separator an added plus. Ordered same style for 2019-2020 school year. Fast shipping even without Prime; both shipments arrived in excellent condition.
5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed
I needed a carbonless copy notebook for my Chemistry lab, and this worked perfectly! It is good quality paper, transfers onto the copy sheet well, and is MUCH cheaper than other brands!
5.0 out of 5 stars NO MORE SPIRAL BOUNDS
Enough room for 3-4 semesters (depends on your lab courses, like 3-5 should be fine). great value. Best: they dont come with spiral bounds which i hate.
3.0 out of 5 stars Gets the Job Done
This will transcribe onto the second page but, the pieces of paper are so thin it wold trace right over about 4-5 Pages. I recommend placing the plastic flap under the two pages you are writing on so your writing does not trace onto any additional places. Also the pages are extremely hard to tear out and I ripped in half about 50% of my assignments. But, it's cheap and has helpful tools inside the booklet.
