Euclid's Army: Preparing Land Forces for Warfare Today

Description:

Rejecting much of the conventional wisdom to what makes up a modern Army, William F. Owen massacres fields of sacred cows to challenge many of the mainstream ideas about the future of land warfare and how it should be conducted. Based on his experience working with the British Army and industry, Owen draws the reader back to basics based on limited budgets, limited resources and an overall reduction in cost, weight and complexity to comprehensively understand how armies might or should equip, train and organise for any unknowable future. Stripped of traditional academic or journalistic approaches and well-worn familiar narratives, "Euclid's Army" reformulates how soldiers, civil servants and politicians should think about land warfare, thus war in general.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Owen's monumental effort delivers a pragmatic, insightful guide to modern military preparedness for Western armies facing similar dilemmas. It offers practical, budget-conscious strategies for equipping, training, and organizing ground forces, emphasizing adaptability and operational utility over speculative future scenarios".

Major General (Ret.) Bengo Yacov Ph.D, Commander of the IDF's Northern Corps and the Multi-Domain Joint Maneuver Array in the Ground Forces

"A searing and authentic account of amongst other things the realities of warfare in the third decade of the 21st Century and the fractured relationship between Military Thought and Military Science...It is testing reading in places and the author is fearless in his challenge of conventional military thinking. It is for these reasons that it should be essential reading for those charged with preparing for war".

Lt Gen Mike Elviss CB MBE, Commander Field Army

"Amid so much breathless commentary on military tech, Wilf Owen yet again cuts through the din with clear-eyed, practical, and resilient recommendations. His analysis is rooted in hard realities and timeless conceptions. A book for soldiers, written by a soldier. Read it and be reminded of the rules that decide wars, not wargames".

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read for a select few

Overall enjoyed the thesis of the book. The writing style was a bit repetitive and self-referencing at times that made some of the points not hit as hard. For hard core military theorists readers definitely worth a read, for most it will be hard to get through chapter 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Euclid's Army is a must for military professionals and political decision makers.

I highly recommend William F. Owen’s ("Wilf") book *Euclid’s Army: Preparing Land Forces for Warfare Today* for all professionals and political decision makers regarding defense. I must also admit that for years, Wilf and I have butted heads over various defense and military historical issues. But I found his book very rewarding and building my evolving knowledge of military affairs.Owen's book is a provocative and pragmatic reexamination of modern land warfare, drawing on the author’s 12 years of service in the British Army and extensive experience in defense consulting. Recently published in 2025, the book challenges conventional military thinking, urging a return to fundamentals in an era of constrained budgets and evolving threats.Wilf argues that much of the prevailing wisdom about modern armies—particularly the emphasis on high-tech solutions and complex operational frameworks—is misguided. He advocates for simplicity, affordability, and adaptability in equipping, training, and organizing land forces. Wilf emphasizes preparing for unpredictable future conflicts by focusing on limited resources, reduced complexity, and core military principles. The book rejects academic and journalistic tropes, offering a soldier’s perspective grounded in practical realities over theoretical or fashionable doctrines like maneuver warfare.Wilf’s central claim is that armies must prioritize cost-effective, resilient strategies to remain effective. He critiques the over reliance on expensive technology and the tendency to overcomplicate military planning, proposing instead a streamlined approach that aligns with fiscal and operational constraints faced by Western armies.Euclid’s Army is a must-read for military professionals, policymakers, and defense enthusiasts seeking a clear-eyed critique of modern military strategy. Its strength lies in its call to refocus on fundamentals, making it particularly valuable for those grappling with budget constraints or skeptical of overhyped technologies. However, readers should approach it with an open mind, recognizing its provocative tone and Western-centric lens. Pairing it with works advocating for specialized doctrines (e.g., urban warfare or cyber integration) could provide a balanced perspective.
