This book is not only written well but is a font of knowledge in terms of photographs. It includes many images of Aborigines carving boomerangs and the process they go through to make these implements which has helped me carving my own. Cutting, splitting, carving and tempering over a fire is included in this work. Photos and descriptions from across Australia detail the differing types of weapons on the continent allow readers to identify the likely origin of any boomerang they see. It is a fantastic book which has helped me immeasurably in understanding these much misunderstood tools of human life, past and present.

A great book detailing the Australian Aboriginal boomerang with awesome color pictures and you know what they say - "a picture is worth a thousand words".

I bought this wonderful book from another site.The greatest value of this book is the clear color pictures and factual descriptions (of both objects and people). Also valuable are the excerpts of observations by anthropologists and others who witnessed and collected kylies (non-returning "boomerangs") and boomerangs in the 1800s and early 1900s in Australia. The book seems to be an outgrowth of a museum exhibit. It's very attractively designed and is almost equivalent in presentation and quality to a "coffee table book", despite being a relatively small paperback. The book is well-written and includes a fair number of Australianisms, some of which I had to look up (such as "soakage"), and Australian cultural references. The author includes a great, extensive bibliography, as well as a fairly detailed map of Australia that shows most (but not all) of the locations mentioned in the text. If you are student or fan of kylies and boomerangs, I would say this is a must-have book.Despite all of these positives, there are few aspects that I found frustrating. Based on how he writes about the topic, the author does not give the impression that he has made or possibly even thrown kylies and boomerangs (there is a nice, brief section on making, and an even briefer section on throwing). That's not necessarily a negative, but his apparent lack of familiarity with some important details of making and throwing leads to ambiguous descriptions throughout the book. For instance, the author calls all of the sticks "boomerangs," even though technically this term applies only to those that return. This minor error wouldn't be noteworthy if he reliably described a stick as a returner or non-returner, but he doesn't. Only through my own experience could I usually estimate what he meant (it was easier for those pictured). Criticisms of this sort really only apply to the reader who is already quite experienced with kylies and boomerangs. A similar nit-pick is that there are no pictures of the sticks' cross-sections (to see the amount dihedral bends, angle of attack twists, and airfoils). The author also does not give any information on weights, widths, or thicknesses of the sticks, but he does diligently note the lengths. The epilogue and some of the final chapters veer off into non-scientific "anthro-babble" and cultural criticism. Regardless, the rest of the book is a treasure.All in all, this is an outstanding book.If you like this book, you might also like Luc Bordes' web site: revedeboomerang.free.fr. He has done some interesting research and experimentation that extends topics in this book and even addresses some mysteries described in the book (such as why pairs of kylies/boomerangs appeared commonly in practice and in art).
A good starting point.
An interesting book and a good starting point for anyone interested in boomerangs. While not very in depth it gives good basic knowledge on the different types of boomerang, their uses and their place within Australian history and culture. Beautifully illustrated and worth the money.
