Good Christians, Good Husbands?: Leaving a Legacy in Marriage and Ministry

Description:

This is the inspiring and convicting account of three eighteenth–century Christian leaders (John Wesley, George Whitefield & Jonathan Edwards), all of whom were passionate about glorifying God by serving Him in their generation. They left an enduring and fruitful legacy through their labours, and they were also married. How they balanced (or did not balance) their passion for ministry with being married is the subject of this book.

This book tells more than just the story of three couples it gives us contemporary lessons too, offering Biblical guidelines and counsel from modern day Christian leaders. Many couples today struggle with how God views the relationship between family and ministry. This book gleans insights from these examples and gives biblical guidelines and counsel from some modern day Christian leaders too. What is the legacy you are leaving in your marriage and ministry? Do you want the answers to these questions:
Which comes first? Family or public ministry? What happens if a wife senses God’s leading in a different direction to her husband? What are the Biblical responsibilities of a husband and father? A wife’s response to difficulties in ministry? How should a godly man treat women other than his wife?

Editorial Reviews

Review

Outstanding analysis of the tensions between marriage and ministry and how the two need not be competitors. Very well worth the reading.

-- Dwight Edwards

Resourced by thorough research into the marriages of Wesley, Whitefield and Edwards, this is a truly wise book on the problem of combining ministry and marriage to the glory of God and the good of all concerned.

-- J. I. Packer

Doreen Moore has done more than write a typical book on marriage. She has seen the impact of life itself upon real people who had real needs and real struggles. The result is a wonderful blend of biography and helpful insight into how God works in our marriages for his kingdom's advance through weak and unworthy servants

-- John Armstrong

Driven by a confluence of four motivations, Doreen Moore has produced a study of marriage that is helpful and charming. She is a good historian. I remember this from excellent work that she did in the history program at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Her desire for accurate helpful history gives energy to the historical investigation of the three highly pertinent examples of how evangelical 'calling' impacts to the marriage relationship. She is a concerned theologian. Marriage as a part of the divine order and a subject of divine revelation has an important part in a comprehensive display of God's purpose in the world. She has been careful to give it a theological arrangement. She is a wife. She understands the pressures brought to bear on a marriage by intense ministry goals and demands. Developing a deep sense of the stewardship of marriage is important to her and helps as her argument unfolds. She is a mother. The mysterious union achieved in a family through the begetting of children and rearing them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord is both a personal experience and a theological truth for her. Christian Focus should be congratulated for the pursuit of this manuscript by Doreen and each reader will receive rewards in personal development far in excess of the time invested in reading.

-- Tom Nettles

I thank God that Doreen Moore wrote this book. Her astounding research on the marriages of some of my greatest heroes of the faith caused me to deeply reflect on the kind of legacy that I'll leave in my marriage. Every pastor should read this.

-- Matt Carter

Its research is thorough; its historiography is careful; it’s thesis is compelling; and, when taken to heart, its practical implications can be life–changing. In fact, Good Christians, Good Husbands? is the only reading for which I’ve actually had students’ wives thank me for assigning it to their husbands.

-- Michael Svigel

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning from evangelical leaders who did not always get the work-life balance right!!!

D.T. · May 29, 2025

A much needed book in the arena of church and mission, for practitioners who actually want to learn and grow how to be effective, without leaving a trail of wounded and abused people in their wake. The author has thoughtfully evaluated and honestly three well-known historical evangelical leaders who did left very different legacies to live by. Read carefully and be encouraged that there is a better way. Burning out is not the only option!

This is a well-referenced book that will serve as a good source for others doing similar research. I like the unique perspective on these icons of the faith. The danger of neglecting family is just as real today for all who seek to be used by God in this present age. Even though this is a somewhat scholarly book, it still reads quickly. She does a nice job of summarizing in the final chapter. I'm buying several copies to give out to friends in the ministry for Christmas. Hopefully it will spare them of future family problems by reminding them of their highest calling as a husband and father.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book for Any christian looking to be a husband

I have great admiration and respect for the three theologians she covers Most important was contrasting their preaching on the subject of marriage with how they lived it out. This message is vital for our own reflection as men. When we go into marriage. This book is a practical look at what happens when we do and do not live by the spirit

5.0 out of 5 stars Blend of history and theology

L. · March 28, 2012

This was an easy-to-read, insightful way of looking at history. I recommend it not only for couples in the ministry, but for historians who would like a model of how to blend sound theological judgement with historical realities. Moore navigates these waters without appearing preachy or soft-pedaling the real problems of real people. She gives us a great gift: authentic hagiography (study of the saints).

G.o.L. · January 23, 2017

I'd like to see every young pastor read this book (FYI, though it's written by a woman, it assumes the pastor is male). Dorreen Moore reviews the marriages of Whitefield, Wesley and Edwards with candor, honesty and insight, drawing admirable conclusions about how to balance ministry and marriage demands. I'm going to be taking a group of young men through this right away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and eye opening

C.R. · March 21, 2017

Doreen Moore traces the lives, ministry, and marriages of three giants of the faith: Jonathan Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, and George Whitefield in an attempt to glean wisdom concerning their marriage relationships. This book strongly impacted my thinking about the necessity of prioritizing and compromising in marriage related decisions. The book is aimed towards those interested in full time ministry however it could easily be applied to anyone who desires a strong marriage. Doreen is a skillful writer who subtly pieces together the data behind the colossal successes and failures in marriage of the three men listed above.
