Buccaneers 1620–1700 (Elite, 69)

Description:

Before the era of great pirates in the early 18th century, there was an even more bloodthirsty phase of attacks in the Caribbean known as the 'Buccaneering Era'. For over 50 years, English, French and Dutch buccaneers launched a series of devastating attacks on Spanish towns, ports and shipping. Well-known buccaneers such as Captain Henry Morgan carried out their raids under the protection of the English crown, and in 1692, the French even used buccaneers to help its army capture the great Spanish city of Cartagena!

5.0 out of 5 stars Forebearers of Piracy

Really interesting! I did not know any of this deeper history behind the classic pirates. They were horrible criminals boosted into prominence by desperate, greedy warring European states. The story of these monsters is both fascinating and sickening. This booklet gives a good, I think accurate picture or the development of this group. Many interesting illustrations. All at a reasonable price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Avast, a Worthy Overview

This is an Osprey book, so you need to think in terms of an adult version of the Eyewitness picture books. You shouldn't expect an exhaustively comprehensive treatment of the subject, after all they tend to be only 1/4 inch thick. So, with expectations aligned, this is a fairly well done treatment of the subject of buccaneers. There are quite a few pictures to compliment the text and the topics covered include their origins, attire, weapons, ships, havens and tactics. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Morgan, Myngs, Nau, Grammont and de Graaf. An excellent overview suitable for adolescents and adults, for more detail on de Graaf and Grammont you can check Clifford's The Lost Fleet, for more of an overview of piracy through the ages check Konstam's History of Pirates.
