Saratoga 1777: Turning Point of a Revolution (Campaign, 67)

Description:

Osprey's examination of the Saratoga campaign, which was a watershed, and is widely believed to have been the turning point of the American War of Independence (1775-1783). For the first time British regulars were beaten in open battle by equal numbers of Americans. The Continentals bore the brunt of the fighting, supported by 'hordes' of militia who proved adept at attacking detachments or lines of communication. The after-shock in America (on both sides) and Europe transformed a civil war into a global struggle against the two colonial superpowers of the day, France and Spain, and eventually lost George III his American colonies.

Excellent read. Information and entertaining this is a required read to understand an important part of American history.

Excellent book. Well written, engaging and informative. Brilliant author who is very true to his scholarship. The only caveat I would place is that the reader should have a modicum of exposure to the conventions of 18th century warfare and a willingness to follow a fluid narrative. The images and maps are the icing on the cake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-researched information on the origin of the campaign, opposing forces, commanders, strategy and the decisive battles

I have been very pleased with and impressed with the quality of Osprey publications. The Campaign series are focused on military campaigns from ancient times through the current era. I have found the books in the Osprey Campaign series to be a great source and frequently the only source for well-researched information on military campaigns especially in the ancient campaigns through early 20th century campaigns.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turning point...

H.W. · January 14, 2015

The 1777 Battle of Saratoga is commonly considered a turning point of the American Revolution, the first major battlefield defeat of British regulars by American forces. It is less commonly explored and explained by a British author, as Brendan Morrissey does here for the Osprey Campaign Series. On offer is a more nuanced and very interesting view of the campaign that led to the battlefield at Saratoga in upstate New York, and its consequences.Morrissey follows the standard Osprey format is setting up the narrative, including discussions of the opposing commanders and their forces. The narrative of the campaign attempts to dissect for the reader the complicated maneuvering of the two sides, including side actions at Fort Stanwix and at Bennington. American General Philip Schuyler gets his fair share of credit for delaying Burgoyne and his Anglo-German-Loyalist-Indian column until American continentals and militia could be gathered, as do many of the lesser known militia leaders. The infighting among the British chain of command that helped undermine the expedition is also laid bare. The text is supported by an excellent selection of maps and diagrams, and period and modern illustrations and photographs. Recommended as a good introduction to the Saratoga Campaign.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Short History

Brendan Morrissey is an exceptional historian. He has the talent and scholarship to take the complex history of the battles of the American Revolution and summarize them into a compact, accurate, unbiased and immensely readable short format for the Osprey Campaign Series. His chose of artwork strongly supports the text and often includes uncommon artwork and illustrations. He consults with the major experts and keeps a neutral perspective concerning the combatants. I have all of his books in my collection.Col. Kim R. Stacy, Savannah, GA, USAHis contribution to the Osprey Campaign Series includes:Monmouth Courthouse 1778: The Last Great Battle in the North (Campaign)Saratoga 1777: Turning Point of a Revolution (Campaign)Quebec 1775: The American Invasion of Canada (Campaign)Boston 1775: The Shot Heard Around the World (Campaign)Yorktown 1781The American Revolution: The Global Struggle for National IndependenceOn to Victory: Guilford Courthouse and Yorktown 1781 (The History Channel, American History Archives)

Like his other books, Mr. Morrissey shows his meticulous research of the northern campaigns, particularly as it relates to upstate New York. Excellent work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tough book for the first read on Saratoga.

Overall I like this series of books.Im new to reading on the American revolution, and for me it was more of an overview and I was looking for details.I like the look of the maps, but unfortunately many of the maps are hard to read (black lines pointing to dark green and black spots on a map) and the maps cover both pages so the part in the crease is impossible to see, so that was disappointing.Had a few nice full color pictures (again the crease ruins a number of them) and many of the soldiers in uniform are black and white.I guess I was looking for something different.

Super !
