The Holy Qur'an

Description:

The Holy Qur'an (also known as The Koran) is the sacred book of Islam. It is the word of God whose truth was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years. As it was revealed, so it was committed to memory by his companions, though written copies were also made by literate believers during the lifetime of the Prophet. The first full compilation was by Abu Bakar, the first Caliph, and it was then recompiled in the original dialect by the third Caliph Uthman, after the best reciters had fallen in battle. Muslims believe that the truths of The Holy Qur'an are fully and authentically revealed only in the original classical Arabic. However, as the influence of Islam grows and spreads to the modern world, it is recognised that translation is an important element in introducing and explaining Islam to a wider audience. This translation, by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, is considered to be the most faithful rendering available in English.

About the Author

Hafiz Abdullah Yusuf Ali (14 April 1872 – 10 December 1953) was an Indian Islamic scholar who translated the Qur'an into English. His translation is one of the most widely-known and used in the English-speaking world. Hafiz Abdullah Yusuf Ali was born in Surat, Gujarat in British India to a wealthy merchant family with a Dawoodi Bohra father. As a child, he received a religious education and, eventually, could recite the entire Qur'an from memory. He spoke both Arabic and English fluently and studied at several European universities, including the University of Leeds. He concentrated his efforts on the Qur'an and studied the Qur'anic commentaries beginning with those written in the early days of Islamic history. His best-known work is The Holy Qur'an: Text, Translation and Commentary, begun in 1934 and published in 1938 by Sh. Muhammad Ashraf Publishers in Lahore, India (later Pakistan). While on tour to promote his translation, he helped to open the Al-Rashid Mosque, the third mosque in North America, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in December 1938. Ali was an outspoken supporter of the Indian contribution to the Allied effort in World War I. He was a respected intellectual in India and Sir Muhammad Iqbal recruited him to be the principal of Islamia College in Lahore. Later in life, he went again to England, where he died in London in December 1953. He is buried in the Muslim cemetery at Brookwood in Woking, Surrey.

A few pointers:-In the Arabic language, Allah means God. Arabs who are Christian, like some Palestinians, also use the word Allah when referring to God.-We have all of the same prophets as Judaism and Christianity. Islam is an Abrahamic faith.-Islam’s main belief is that there is only one God that should be worshiped.-Jesus is viewed as a prophet of God, not the son. He is also the Muslim’s Messiah.-Muslims believe in the Angels, the day of judgment, heaven and hell. Many of the same things that Jews and Christians believe.-The main difference between Islam and Judaism is, Muslims believe Jesus is the Messiah whereas Jews do not.-The main difference between Islam and Christianity is, Muslims do not believe Jesus is the son of God. Muslims also don’t believe in the trinity. Muslims believe only God should be worshiped.Hope this helps!

4.0 out of 5 stars Christian perspective on the Islamic holy text

j. · March 10, 2023

The Quran is a compilation of divine revelations that were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of 23 years. It covers a wide range of topics, including faith, morality, law, history, and spirituality. The text is organized into chapters, or surahs, and verses, or ayat. Some Christians view the Quran with skepticism or even hostility, believing that its teachings contradict or undermine Christian beliefs. They may cite specific verses or passages that they find problematic, such as those that deny the divinity of Jesus Christ or reject the concept of the Trinity, but I have never thought it made much sense anyway.Other Christians take a more nuanced approach to the Quran, recognizing its historical and cultural significance while still maintaining their own beliefs. They may study the Quran as a way to better understand Islam and engage in interfaith dialogue with Muslims. From my perspective, one of the strengths of the Quran is its ability to inspire and guide people in their daily lives. Its teachings on compassion, justice, and the unity of all humanity have served as a source of inspiration for Muslims for over a millennium. The Quran's poetic language and literary style have also been praised for their beauty and elegance. However, the Quran can also be difficult to understand and interpret. Its language and cultural context are rooted in 7th-century Arabia, and many of its passages are open to different interpretations. This has led to varying interpretations and understandings of the text among different Muslim groups and scholars.Furthermore, some critics have raised concerns about certain passages in the Quran that they view as promoting violence or intolerance. However, it is important to note that these passages must be understood within their historical context and in light of the Quran's broader message of peace, justice, and compassion. In conclusion, the Quran is a complex and nuanced text that has had a profound impact on world history and culture. Its teachings on faith, morality, and spirituality continue to inspire and guide millions of Muslims around the world, and its literary style and poetic language are widely praised. While there are certainly challenges in understanding and interpreting the text, it remains a vital source of wisdom and guidance for people of all faiths and backgrounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expanding my mind

K.G. · January 24, 2011

I haven't made it all the way through this book... but, as I continue to read I find new ways of thinking about what I believe and solidify what I have always thought... there is more that we have in common than not. I am looking forward to finishing this book... so, I can start again. I am sure I will read this many many times over many many years. I will always be Catholic... but, expanding my understanding in other religions helps me understand the world around me and have a deeper understanding of my own faith. I would highly recommend this interpretation of the Quran... it is not difficult to read (requires focus and thoughtful reading) and seems more "modern" in language than other versions I have previewed.
