Russian Motor Vehicles: Soviet Limousines 1930-2003

Description:

A book concerning Russian Limousines, and the Chinese models that were initially derived from them, has never been attempted before. This book investigates the whole story of why the Soviet Communist Party required such a bourgeois product, and how production was subsequently achieved. Following the orders of Stalin, work on the Limousines commenced during the first Five Year Plan (1927-1933) at the Putilov Works, late the Kirov Zavod, where the Leningrad L-1 was made in a limited number. From these beginnings, the Moscow and Gorky models emerged, and later the Chinese-derived types made with Russian aid during the late 1950s.
Covering all of these models, up to the last one produced in 2003, and featuring full specifications translated from the relevant primary sources in Russian and Chinese literature, this is a meticulous and unique account of a previously neglected subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations and Information - Hard To Find!!!

Great book on a hard-to-find subject matter. There are not many Russian automobile history books out there. This one concentrates on primarily the early 1900's. Which is great with some great illustrations as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing else out there like it

If you're a fan of Soviet limos, just buy it. I understand that there are a few inaccuracies (see the review on hooniverse.com for more details), but it's still a treasure trove. Plus, there's a chapter on Chinese limousines which is also informative.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good content but poorly put together.

Contrary to my belief, I will start with the good news first. The history of USSR vehicles has always been a special topic. I grew up there, but when I was younger, I didn't have nearly as much interest. This book has a very good amount of illustrations and covers the soviet limousines development history well. Even though this book was first published in 2011, I was hoping that the author would have included more information about the last of the ZIL limos. Google image search for ZIL 4104 shows dozens of color images of various editions of the car, but this book only includes one color photo. However, there are too many errors in this book. As the other reader pointed out, the author erroneously refers to the Ford's River Rouge Complex in Detroit, MI located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ouch! Though the most difficult aspect of reading this book was the improper spelling and grammar in Russian and the transliterations. Being a native Russian speaker, those kind of things jump out immediately. Also, page 48 starts a new paragraph without a proper indentation and with the lower case letter. I quadruple checked to make sure I didn't miss anything. Additionally, on page 50, there is a letter "n" missing from Soviet Union.

Early in the book, the author inaccurately states that Ford's River Rouge plant is in the state of Louisiana! With that kind of glaring "common knowledge for a motorhead" error, how many other errors are in there?

Information about Russian limousines is very difficult to find. This is one of the very few books that contain information about Russian cars. Anybody interested in cars I think must read this book and have it as a reference about Russian limousines.

Il libro è bello

Russische Automobil- & Verkehrs-Geschichte der Gründerjahre

F.W. · September 22, 2016

Ibought this book to help expand my knowledge of Soviet cars. It has some rare pictures of vehicles that I have not seen elsewhere. The technical details are amazing.
