5.0 out of 5 stars So glad to see it has been reprinted!
This is a lovely book with full instructions for making a beautiful rug-hooked playmat of a farmyard and surrounding fields, plus instructions for knitting all the farm animals and a farm family. The photographs are beautiful and very inspiring - all in all a wonderful project to make for my grandchildren. A friend has an old copy of the original book and I am so pleased to have found that it has been reprinted!
5.0 out of 5 stars As described
I saw parts of these patterns in a German magazine years ago and was very intrigued. I'm so pleased, someone put this together in a book. Thank you.
5.0 out of 5 stars Knitted Farmyard
I haven't knit anything yet but have looked through the book and am very pleased at how easy the patterns are going to be to follow.
4.0 out of 5 stars Fun farm to knit!
Several people asked me to direct them to a copy of this book after they saw it. The patterns are adorable and infinitely customizable.A coworker has begun knitting the whole set. Please not the dimensions before you begin. It looks very tiny in the pictures, but is not as small as you may think. The mat base is at least 3ft x 4ft.
3.0 out of 5 stars Vague Guideline at Best
As an avid Waldorf crafter, I really wanted to love this book. It hints at a novel approach to creating knitted play toys for children. The problem presents itself in various forms: awkward British English translation, interpret-your-own instructions and poor printing quality.1. Yes, American's can read British English, but it is difficult when dealing with measurements and certain terminology. Also, it read like a literal translation of the German text, so some references are awkward and the reader left wondering what was really meant.2. This is NOT a book for a beginner crafter or knitter. There are precious few diagrams and casual references at best to stitches used. I had to pull out my own stitch dictionary to figure out what some of the stitches looked like much less how to apply them. Very few measurements are given. At best, this is a casual guideline to build your own ideas from but far from any instruction booklet on how to recreate one exactly yourself. The instructions that are given are unnecessarily complicated to create such simple shapes. (For simple and easy directions of almost identical looking animals try "Knitted Animals (Education S.)" by Anne-dorthe Grigaff and Bjarni B. Jacobsen).3. A final note is the images and printing quality. The cover is a blurred image that smacks of poor print-on-demand quality. Thankfully the images of the finished products inside are crisp, clear and close-up. However, many of the given patterns don't create what animals are in the pictures! There is an author's note at the beginning warning about the changes. But my point is this: I want to make what I see in the photos, that's why I bought the book! If you are going to change the patterns, then make a sample and include that photo instead of the original pictures! It's even more frustrating because when you study the pictures, the way the animals were originally created in the German version are more logically constructed than the adapted pattern given. But if you were not a moderate to advanced knitter you would not know this.In the end, while the idea IS a great starting point, try to find this in a library, buy second hand or borrow from a friend to flip through once or twice. But in my POV not worth the $10 or space to keep on my bookshelf.
5.0 out of 5 stars Easy patterns to follow
I enjoyed finding this book which I had in the 1970s with patterns for beautiful hand crafted fantasy for children that you can easily pack up and take anywhere. I made it for my son & now I can make it for my granddaughter!
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to make, cute and fun to play with
I love these patterns. Made two farms and dozens of animals. My attempts at the people were disappointing but I'll keep trying. The farm makes a wonderful gift for a loved child in your life.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I've knitted a few of the animals, but haven't started the landscapes and buildings. What fun!
Exactly as described. Arrived quickly.
Great little book for knitting farm critters. Good pictures. Clear instructions. Good for beginners and long time knitters. Lots of fun!
Great little project book
I had this book when I was younger, and knitted some chickens with my gran, then grew up and forgot about it. One of the Knitting magazines had a farmyard knit-along last year, and I made it, remembering this farm project. I help at a knit-and-knatter, and one of the regulars had this book with her, and I recognised it straight away, and had to buy it.
Knitted farmyard
A lovely book with easy to follow instructions for lots of farmyard animals and buildings, fields etc It will be great to knit for small children!
Great book
Easy to follow great diagrams
Bit light on details
This book is a tremendous inspiration and I am in the middle of making the farm. But some instructions are sparse or missing- the pig's ears have no mention, for example, and it shows lambs and a piglet but no intstructions for these, either. There are no instructions for finishng the rug; I plan to back it with hessian and sew tape round the edges. Be warned that pope cleaners are used for some bodies, which some may think would be dangerous for young children. On the theme of pipe cleaners, English craft ones are about double the length of those used originally!I made up some of the farmyard (as I wanted a pig stye and wider paths), and think that some of the instructions are odd- 20 cm lengths of wool for corn, for example makes it rather high compared with the people. However, I loved making the animals and am mixing up greens for the meadow with a few yellow bits for buttercups. I found crewel wool very useful- there's a shop in Thame that sells it, the only place I know that does. 40p a hank meant that I bought a lot of different colours for features, hair and clothes. If you have done some knitting and crochet before and can improvise a bit, you will enjoy making the farm. The photos are lovely
