The Railway Children (Wordsworth Collector's Editions)

Description:

The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit. When Father goes away with two strangers one evening, the lives of Roberta, Peter and Phyllis are shattered. They and their mother have to move from their comfortable London home to go and live in a simple country cottage, where Mother writes books to make ends meet. However, they soon come to love the railway that runs near their cottage, and they make a habit of waving to the Old Gentleman who rides on it. They befriend the porter, Perks, and through him learn railway lore and much else. They have many adventures, and when they save a train from disaster, they are helped by the Old Gentleman to solve the mystery of their father's disappearance, and the family is happily reunited.

About the Author

Edith Nesbit (1858 - 1924) wished to be remembered as a poet, but her poetry, like much of her adult fiction, is long forgotten. She came to write children's stories in later life, and was a responsible for a string of enduring titles, the most notable being 'The Railway Children'. She has been described as 'the first modern writer for children', although Wordsworth readers have also been introduced to her talents as a writer of supernatural fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love these books!

I'm absolutely so pleased with these books! Not only do they feature the classic stories and novels of the past, but the details of the actual book make them true collector editions. The parchment/paper is so smooth and have a lovely texture. The hardcover is very sturdy, but I like the size because they are still quite light enough to comfortably hold in your hand as you're reading. Also, the love how the title has gold foil and the covers feature beautiful artwork/paintings!I've purchased a few different books from this collection and kept a few for myself, but I've also given them as gifts. The recipients of these books have been so pleased and surprised by how pretty and lovely they are. They will look good on anyone's shelf. As they add more titles, I plan to purchase more to add to my collection! Excellent quality!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful edition of a classic

C. · December 4, 2024

This is a very lovely edition of an amazing classic! The story of the children is interesting all the way through the book, and builds to an ending that is satisfying. It’s set in early 20th century England and gives wonderful insight into that time period while telling a perfect story of three siblings.

Used as a Christmas gift for my sister and her daughter who loves to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars 120 Years Old and Still Young

M.V. · May 4, 2023

This was my first E Nesbit novel, though I had read her simplifications of Shakespeare's plots for young people, which I liked a lot.Other than a few alarming moments that would not fit today's sensibilities, including one regarding "gender types" in the penultimate chapter that I don't know what to make of... this is as good a reading for kids and grownups as I know. I am recommending it to everyone, both as a good read, and to highlight cultural assumptions then to now.Edith Nesbit's name kept coming up as an influence on later writers, and I see why. Clear, clever, dry, never boring, and with wonderful story moments. A gem.P.S. The pop-down menu asked me "How old (in years) was the person you got this book for?" and it stopped at 18. I'm almost 65, but I teach storytellers, including children's book writers, and I think I appreciate this book as much at 65 than I would have as a kid. Maybe more.

Lovely children's story

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for family reading!

A.C. · July 22, 2022

We really enjoyed this book as a family! My kids are 2, 6 &7, and this book was pretty good for all of them (and the grown ups too!). From an adult perspective, I felt there were some gaps in the story. From the youngest’s perspective it was, perhaps, too descriptive. But the story is very engaging, from a little mystery, to the ever-important-to-two-year-olds topic of trains, there is room in each character to identify with, and enough whimsy to engage everyone!I am ok with owning it, but It would have been just as well to borrow it from a library too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book!

I paid a couple of extra dollars for this cover art and am so glad I did! This book quickly became one of our favorites (my children are 9, 7 and 4) and now we have a beautiful copy to re-read and treasure.

2.0 out of 5 stars paperback cover art not as displayed

K.&.M.J. · June 30, 2025

Not the cover I anticipated, the image on this listing for the paperback is misleading. The book was also bent and had a sticky substance on the back…my guess is that it was previously returned. Of course the story is a classic and I think everyone should read it. Just pick a different copy.

Molto bello

Molto bello, soprattutto la copertina e le illustrazioni. Esteticamente è più piccolo di quel che mi aspettavo, ha un formato strano

A beautiful book

F.K. · November 25, 2022

Bought this for my granddaughter. She not only loves the story but it takes pride of place in her book shelf. A very special book, beautifully bound, one to treasure. I have just bought her the Secret Garden to go with it. So good to see she enjoys the books I did as a child.

Boring

r. · January 4, 2022

I bought this book, among others, as I'm starting to read in english in order to improve my vocabulary but the story is so annoying that i couldn't read more than a few pages.
