About the Author

Mark Diacono is lucky enough to spend most of his time eating, growing, writing and talking about food. He has written a number of award-winning books, including A Year at Otter Farm and A Taste of the Unexpected (which both won Food Book of the Year for André Simon and the Guild of Food Writers, respectively), Sour (which was Food Book of the Year 2019 in The Sunday Times and Daily Mail, and nominated for a James Beard Award in the US), Herb and Spice. Known for growing everything from Szechuan pepper to pecans to Asian pears, Mark's refreshing approach to growing and eating has done much to inspire a new generation to grow some of what they eat. He was involved with River Cottage, appearing in the TV series, running courses and events at River Cottage HQ, and he has written four River Cottage books. Great recipes

Weird combinations of ingredients....

I had wanted to order this book for ages, based on the photos and reviews. The recipes are certainly inventive, if you like weird combinations of ingredients! And weird ingredients that I and I suspect most people have never heard of. Freekeh, anyone? Or how about burrata, taleggio, or orecchiete? I would not say these are easy recipes, and although a lot of the ingredients you would class as everyday, many call for a little bit of this and a little bit of that (fresh food I am talking about, not store-cupboard ingredients) which would then leave you with a lot of leftover stuff to try and use up. For example, Potato and Egg Salad calls for, amongst other things, 1 shallot, 2 celery heart stalks, 6 cornichons, 6 radishes. Most recipes have a wide range of ingredients, both fresh and store-cupboard, many of which I wouldn't normally have in, orwant to buy in, as they would most likely not be required again - and as an experienced home cook I do keep quite a wide range of ingredients in. I browsed as far as page 105 and could not find a single dish that I felt inspired to cook. Then I flicked through the rest. When I came across a recipe for Parsnip and Nutmeg Ice Cream, it clinched my decision to return the book. It's beautiful to look at, well laid out and beautifully illustrated, but I wanted a book with recipes I would actually want to cook. Disappointed.
