DCeased: DC Compact Comics Edition

Description:

With death spreading across the planet, who will live and who will turn in this apocalyptic tale of heroism, sacrifice and annihilation?

Fighting time, each other and all of humanity, Earth's greatest heroes must rally together for what may very well be their last chance to save the world from the most terrible plague humanity has ever seen.

THE END IS HERE!

Six hundred million people. That's how many fall victim when a mysterious techno-organic virus is unleased on Earth. Six hundred million infected. Six hundred million turned into mindless, rampaging killers bent on death and destruction.

And that's just the beginning.

Cities. Nations. Undersea kingdoms and paradise islands. One by one, they fall to the monstrous hordes. Now only Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League stand between Earth and utter annihilation...

But for how long?

Nothing they've ever faced has prepared them for an onslaught of this magnitude. Nothing they've ever seen can match the scale of the tragedy and terror that have been unleased. As heroes and villains, gods and monsters are wiped out, only one question remains: What happens to the World's Greatest Heroes if the world ends?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Comic book

The book I ordered arrived in good condition, and the artwork is fantastic. The best way to describe this comic is “DC meets zombies” though they’re not exactly zombies. As a big fan of horror and anything zombie-related, I found this DC storyline to be a must-read. If you're into dark, twisted takes on superheroes, this one's definitely worth checking out.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Dulled Bite

Wow, over 5000 reviews! Do we really need another? I'll try and be brief...Comparison to Marvel Zombies is obvious (and lazy), but DCeased has more in common with Garth Ennis' "Crossed" series and Gail Simone's "Leaving Megalopolis". This particular edition, the DC Compact Comics budget softcover, is packed with interesting ideas but suffers a certain lack of impact for several reasons -The Compact series is smaller, more a digest-sized and while it's odd to say, reducing the page/art size does psychologically reduce the impression made. Not hugely, but it does...We know this is an 'alternate world'/Elseworlds kind of deal so while engaging, from the outset it feels a bit inconsequential. Whatever happens doesn't really "matter"...The voiceover/narration sets the events as something that's already happened, already concluded, making this story a told-tale, a memory. Meaning somebody survived to tell us all this. And if we know from page one-panel one that one person survived, why not two? Why not 50? Why not a thousand? Stakes drop instantly...This edition collects issues 1-6 of the 'core' book, but DCeased was told across multiple minis and crossovers. so here, we're just getting the frame. Sure, it's complete from A to Zed but there are palpable gaps, jumps, plot threads and characters dropped. The story as presented here feels rushed and incomplete, more like a collection of main points and highlights, and this awkward pacing makes it hard to really connect as a reader and care...Artists change, sometimes by issue to issue and sometimes from pages to pages, but it's all good, solid work and the coloring is fantastic - good contrasts of dark and light, colorful and subdued. The violence level is lower than expected, much less than MZ, with more implied than shown. I think the thinking was to keep it at PG13 at all times. This is fine but again, lowers impact a bit; the story ideas are fairly adult but DC has always been the more disciplined company/publisher (the Cyborg/Giganta panel is quite jarring in it's sudden break from this and actually feels out of place as a result, slightly bad taste). There are moments to love: smart-sharp-darkly humorous interactions and lines (LOVE Black Canary as a Green Lantern, love Lex's condescending dialogue even in the face of The End), but the story as given is too scattered, too diluted to become the classic it wants to be.Take it as 3.5 stars.

Kind of depressing so much death and probably what it’s all about. I’m still the fool wanting my heroes to have a happy ending. Great art, fine storytelling but it left me feeling very hopeless and maybe that’s better than feeling nothing.
