“A powerful celebration of self-acceptance and sisterhood.”-Kirkus Reviews
“St. Clair’s efforts to empower her kid sister through My Beautiful Black Hair is one of the best examples of sibling love I’ve ever seen. The photographs and interviews embody the strength and struggle of Black girls everywhere. It is an excellent piece for our very unique hair experiences.” -Keturah A. Bobo, New York Times bestselling illustrator of I Am Enough
“This book has reminded me that the complexities of Black hair have yet to be detangled strand by strand. Through these narratives, more people will see their value, strength, and uniqueness, and will gain the courage to live boldly and beautifully-just as our Creator imagined.” -Daphne Lee, Dance Theatre of Harlem
“This is the book I want to gift every Black woman I know.” -Robert Jones, Jr., New York Times bestselling author of The Prophets
"My Beautiful Black Hair is a divine example of courage, self-love, acceptance, and diversity. It's a stunning collection that everyone needs to sit with, explore, and share with the little black girl in their life." -from the foreword by Alex Elle, author of After the Rain
“There is a shared story in Black women’s hair that tends to hold both a bit of joy and, at times, despair. My Beautiful Black Hair is a love letter to all Black women who are navigating the glorious landscape of our crowns. Through this brilliant collection of wisdom, vulnerability, affirmation, and deep, deep affection, St. Clair not only reminds her little sister how glorious her hair is, but she offers an illuminated narrative for all Black women to sit back and feel seen and celebrated.”— RACHEL CARGLE
Public academic, writer, and lecturer
“This is a community’s love letter to [the author’s younger sister], but it is also a self-reflective love note, an effort to agitate social constructs that have told all Black women that the bodies we are born into are not enough. The images are glorious, the anecdotes at times tender, at times seething. The entire book is powerful.”— ELIZABETH ACEVEDO New York Times bestselling author of The Poet X and Clap When You Land

Review:
5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
My response to this book is so much bigger than a star rating, so much bigger than liking or loving it—this is simply essential reading and viewing. The photos are striking and memorable—pure art. The stories from all of the women are powerfully vulnerable. This is at once a celebration of Black beauty and a call to arms for all of us to disavow the white supremacist standards that have ruled this nation since its inception. Khloe is so lucky to have St. Clair Derrick-Jules as her sister and mentor, and the world is lucky to have her as an artist, opening up all of our eyes to true humanity.
5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful tribute to unconditional self love
Everyone should read this book whether you are a young Black woman who has felt the scorch of flat iron burns, or like me, a middle-aged suburban white guy whose blow dryer mornings are now distant memories—or if, like most anyone, you simply enjoy looking at gorgeous photographs and reading inspirational stories. This book celebrates natural hair and reveals the considerable challenges with identity and acceptance that Black women living in white-dominated cultures face. But there is much more happening here as well, and it is a credit to the author and photographer, St. Clair Detrick-Jules, that she is able to extract so much wisdom out of an investigation into a topic that’s often covered as simply one more aspect of appearance and fashion. How is it that whenever someone courageously risks sharing her vulnerability, it summons such resounding beauty and compassion as to be more contagious a force than any pandemic? The ripples reach far into your heart, and remind you that underneath your carefully maintained and polished exterior, you too are a vulnerable, sensitive being striving to be seen, heard, and loved—as are we all—and that what you are covering is infinitely more beautiful and compelling than anything you can possibly "make up" in an attempt to match a conditioned ideal.Defenses are hopeless against the tsunami of love that awaits you here. What fills these pages is the antidote to the anger and hatred that plagues our cultural landscape and pollutes our minds: a strong current of healing and rejuvenation that has always been right here yet somehow overlooked—until now.To view this book is to witness a garden of flowers in full blossom. It serves as an invitation to the natural beauty which surrounds us and which, perhaps to our amazement, also lurks within ourselves. It is the manifestation of our true nature mirrored uniquely on the page: every word, every photograph, and every model is drenched with love. While the overarching conceit is a letter to the author’s younger sister, the book reads like a love letter to all, regardless of your skin color or hair type—though it needs to be said that Black women face uniquely, historically painful consequences around both, in ways that I cannot ever truly understand. To receive this letter and feel its alchemy, you need only have an open heart and mind—and if yours happen to be closed, this book will surely open them. It is a feast for the eyes and soul. The most powerful works of art have the unique ability to transform all parties involved: from the authors to the subjects to the viewers (who are coincidentally a bit of both). This book is such a work. It will inspire you and move you, and you will be the richer for having involved yourself with it. I know I am. So lay down your struggle for a moment, and open. Meet what is always and ever yours.
5.0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
I read a little of this book while sitting in the hair salon. I had to buy it for my 9 year old niece. I want her to grow up loving her natural hair. (Her sister is mixed race and has a different texture of hair.) The stories are quick reads but offer a glimpse into how hair is seen in America and some other cultures. I loved learning about others' journeys into loving all parts of themselves.
5.0 out of 5 stars Use it for yourself or I would absolutely use it in the classroom.
This is a beautiful book. It illustrates humanity at its finest.

St. Clair's book is absolutely stunning! A significantly original and influential photojournalistic collection of 101 Black women's stories about their BEAUTIFUL natural hair.Representation is so vital to our growth and the way we come to view and love ourselves. Understanding this, St. Clair interviewed and photographed 101 Black women to help empower her younger sister Khloe to love her beautiful natural hair and pave the way towards self-acceptance and self-love.The photography is so captivating that it's hard to imagine this book without the visual storytelling aspect. The stories shared are unique, powerful, moving, and inspiring. I loved the rawness, the diversity, and the feeling of sisterhood in each of these stories.
