5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully curated interviews with key people behind the recent wave of AI advances

S.M.(.S. · February 5, 2019

This book is a gift to our society. These are beautifully crafted and curated interviews with 23 people-- most of whom have been direct and highly instrumental research and/or technology contributors to the recent wave of phenomenal AI progress, and a few others who are prominent and deeply knowledgeable observers, policy analysts and critiquers of AI trends and their future implications. There is no hype in this book. Everyone of the 23 interviews is with a deeply knowledgeable and thoughtful subject matter expert who responds to basic and fundamentally important questions about AI capabilities, AI limitations, trajectories for directions and progress, and their personal views on a few key societal impact issues. The beautiful thing about this book is that-- aside from the author Martin Ford's intro (1st chapter) and summary (last chapter), all of the speaking is done by the experts themselves, in their voice, with their own personal way of explaining core concepts, and their own personal views of social issues and impacts.Congratulations to Martin Ford for bringing this book to the world, so that we can all have such direct and intimate access to the the carefully stated and well written thoughts of these extraordinary collection of people who are all so deeply knowledgeable about AI (including past, present and future aspects of AI).I have been following this topic- very actively-- for over 35 years--- and even with all of that background, I find this a highly informative and delightful read. If you are not a specialist in this field, and you want a reliable and high quality way to get introduced to the big ideas and the big issues, this is a must read.Even if you are a specialist in the field, you will probably enjoy seeing the way that some of the world's foremost experts in these areas explain some of the basic and core concepts. This is NOT a book of hype. This is NOT a book that will tell you have to immediately revamp your business strategy. This IS a book that helps you understand the big and important ideas- but in very clear and easy to understand language. Through the interviews, the book clearly explains the foundational concepts and issues, both technological and social, and gives you a very good way to understand the current situation with AI capability and the directions for ongoing capability development.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Insightful, "What the Experts Think" Overview of AI

I.H. · April 17, 2021

Maybe the best book I've read on AI. Want to know what the experts think about things like the dangers vs. benefits of AI, the current state of the technology, what's accurate and what the media gets wrong, and written in a way that the same questions are consistently addressed so you get an apples-apples comparison? This is the book for you. You'll also learn some basic primer level stuff in terms of things like "AI" right now, does not exist. Everything we see advertised and talked about is actually an example of Machine Learning (ML), which is a fancy term for teaching really powerful computers to get really good at recognizing very specific kinds of patterns and then recommending actions based on the results. Image analysis, stock trading, etc etc.None of these computers are "intelligent" in the traditional sense of the word, and so you learn pretty quickly where we're at, and where we're likely to go, according to a whole cast of very intelligent programmers, business technologists and data scientists. I think if every journalist in America read this book we'd get a much better quality of reporting on this topic and citizens better informed. Until then you can read the book instead. : )

5.0 out of 5 stars Where to Begin in Understanding Artificial Intelligence

H.L. · March 21, 2019

Whether you are fed up with robo calls, or wondering if the TV stations have forgotten, how to spell, wondering what your next computer might be like, or thinking about careers for your children, in other words no matter what problem you face today, this work has something to tell you. As noted in the book some technologies , electrification for example, just transform everything. AI is very likely to be one of them. But how does one approach a new unknown, what questions to think about and ask, and where might one go to find information to any depth? This book is a gateway to AI for all levels of technical competence and contains links to any depth of the technology you wish to pursue. No it is not always an exciting read, how many really exciting engineers and scientists have you met? But it is always a surprising one. A book to read, follow the links from, and come back to as you gain more life experience with AI.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good way to learn about how AI is changing our future

J.M. · December 4, 2018

This book shows you what’s really going on with AI from the experts themselves. You get to see what the experts in this book can already do with AI, and how much they believe AI will transform the world next. It's easy to read because you can follow Martin Ford and the experts talk normally. You learn a lot of things about AI and you also get to see the personality of the people who are building AI. Who they are, what they look like, how they think. It’s very interesting to watch each individual expert closely, and decide how their work in AI might change our whole world.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great overview of where we stand on AI from its foremost practitionners.

M. · January 11, 2019

Because it is a collection of interviews with the foremost practitionners of AI, it provides a broad palette of viewpoints on the topics, not just one subjective standpoint. The downside is that it becomes a bit repetitive after a while and not all interviewees are of equal quality. Some unfortunately are content with bromides and generalities and the author should have edited or eliminated those. Others though are sharp and very interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars well structured….covered the critical dimensions of AI…balanced and educated perspectives

P. · February 23, 2022

Martin is knowledgeable, which makes his interactions with deep experts more like a dialogue. This book grounded me on the essential dimensions of human intelligence, and where AI is at as it evolves rapidly along some dimensions and slowly along others. Most institutional leaders / decision makers / boards don’t understand where AI is at, and what it can and can’t do well at scale. Those few who do get it will accelerate beyond legacy companies.

A really outstanding comprehensive collection of these days AI thoughts

R.K. · March 26, 2022

Even though it has an enormous volume, this book never tended to get boring. Each next interview opened up new aspects and shed light on the topics from a different perspective. This is a must read for everyone engaged in the field of AI - which is kind of the bottom line of the whole book: Don’t stop critical thinking about this, but also don’t be (too) pessimistic!
