The content goes far beyond the title. Baron’s book, first published in Great Britain in 2004, features flowers in embroidery, but also in painting, resist dyeing, collage, and other techniques. What she reveals is how to create elegant pictures that just happen to include thread. Her directions do occasionally meander, but at her work’s center are three designs—Summer Meadow, Buttercup Field, and Flowers by the Fence—with step-by-step, color-photograph instructions for every part of the process, from dyeing the background to selecting a frame. She mixes techniques in with her designs, looking at machine embroidery, sponging and masking, and a variety of resists (bubble wrap, for one). It’s a small tome, but one filled with big ideas and wall-to-wall examples of Baron’s art, whether the process of hand dyeing or finished fields of blooms. — Barbara Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
I have bought this book recently. I have already read it several times. The pictures give so much inspiration, they are stunning ! The "quilts! are quite easy to accomplish. It is'nt really a quilt book. But a book with fabric pictures embellished with a mix of embroidered flowers and small pieces of fabric. I can highly recommend this book. If you like to do work with fabric and like a little easy embroidery and futhermore find it exciting to dye the background fabric in an easy way this is the book for you. So much new inspiration. I started my first picture after inspiration from this book two days after I received the book. This is playing with fabric in a new creative way.Monica-Spain

Don't worry if you don't have a sewing machine or don't know much about applique or quilting. You can do all of the stitching by hand, and all the quilting and applique used in her beautiful designs is clearly explained. Never be nervous about trying something that you wish you could do. The author even says that if you don't much like a stitch or something else in a thread painting, it will show in your work. I couldn't agree more.In addition, one thing I've always insisted on with my needlework students is that they choose a piece they love, even if it's too advanced for them at the moment. Sure, I persuade them to do a smaller piece, such as part of a 12" x 48" band sampler, rather than the whole thing. But in the long run, you're going to spend hours working on fine handwork--you have to love it or you'll give up before it's half done.Baron's color sense is outstanding; in fact, she's fearless about hue saturation and intensity. We all need to be reminded every once in a while that those gorgeous antique samplers, with their delicate and elegant colors, were actually quite colorful--on occasion, a bit loud and flashy--but faded over the years since dyes weren't permanent. You'll be glad you purchased this if only to read and be inspired. Plus you may learn new techniques if you've only done one of the two arts in the past. I recommend this book without reservation.
4.0 out of 5 stars very informative book and great to have
very informative about various types of embroidery. I enjoyed seeing how embroidery can be taken to areas that become very artistic and give this craft a very artistic path to awesome results. If you enjoy doing the spectacular with thread then this book needs to be in your arsenal.
5.0 out of 5 stars An Art book, not just for embroidery
I love this book, but I can see where someone who just wants patterns may not be happy with this. It is an inspirational book, it gives you tips, guidelines, how to instructions, but it is to help you be creative, not just copy someone else's work. I find it totally wonderful for getting my mind to think outside the box, but if you are just wanting embroidery patterns, this is not the book for you. If you want to create, then perhaps it's worth a look. But to complain that you "didn't know" because you only looked at the cover is not an excuse. There are reviews that let you know, and you can look inside the book which should tell you immediately what all is involved, paint, stitch, fabric, whatever your mind can come up with. So, do your homework, don't buy and then complain because you didn't really look.
5.0 out of 5 stars Use of images increases the educational value of book
The delicate beauty of the tiny flowers using handpainted fabric, dyed silk floss/thread, various threadwork and tiny cut-out fabric pieces are vividly brought to life through the quality images throughout the book. All procedures are discussed and supplemented by images to guide you to make flowers very similar to what is shown and thus providing the techniques necessary for each artist to vary the techniques in order to make your own variation of tiny embroidered flowers. The applications for this type of work is enormous and some ideas, such as handmade cards, are provided in this book. One cannot go wrong with having this book on your creative work space or reference library. I am very pleased with this book and hope to apply the ideas to my own work.
