5.0 out of 5 stars Chip Zdarsky is a Great Batman Writer
This collection wisely puts the Mind Bomb and Joker: Year One twin arcs of Chip Zdarsky together, which fleshes out this storyline in its entirety with a strong link to the Failsafe and Batman of Gotham arcs. Mind Bomb focuses on Batman's struggle with his multiverse psyches, Zur En Arrh, alongside his struggle with The Joker. Joker: Year One presents Chip's own Joker origin with reverence to Moore's The Killing Joke and Synder's Year Zero with Red Hood aspects, along with Bat Family cameos and the chaotic aspects of the Joker presented in a multiverse story form.Chip constructs his own microcosmic Batman mythos within the larger 80+ year DC collection of Batman takes. He continues to build on what he started with Batman: The Knight for a consuming and multifaceted saga. The way he's brought in various mentors of The Batman, included a fascinating reinterpretation of Zur En Arrh, and reconstructed so many Batman characters is breathtaking and entertaining. I think Chip Zdarsky and Mariko Tamaki are my favorite "early 2020's" Batman writers. They're both experimental in a balanced way and heavy on plot, characterization, and convincing/believable dialogue unlike Tom King and others who aren't my thing. Both writers can move a story forward without too much repetition and the same panel tricks (unlike TOM KING, to be repetitive). Chip and Tamaki both collaborate with great artists and they've done a lot to push the mythos of Batman forward while keeping it within a believable continuity. In contrast, the great Chaos God Morrison was too experimental and edgy for me; Chip and Mariko are just right. At first, I thought this arc of Chip's, Joker Year One, went a little off the road with Chip's multiverse obsession (which worked so well in The Batman of Gotham as I do like his multiverse additions!), but after a reread many months later with this collected volume format, paired with Mind Bomb... I actually love it.Chip pushes this idea that Joker and Batman share a mentor from his Knight series... and as wild and off as this particular arc plot originally seemed to me when I read the individual issues, I still love Chip's writing and ideas, as well as the thought and flow that he puts into characters. This third? Chip Batman arc grew on me and I like it as much as the others. It's worth owning this and I enjoy the beautiful art. Highly recommend this!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!
Didn't think I'd care for this. I'd grown tired of the Joker and didn't think I'd enjoy this but I really did. It was a great read.
2.0 out of 5 stars Boring
Possibly the most boring Batman written since Tom King took over. I can't wait until Chip Zdarskys run is over. I am counting down the days. So boring and dull.
1.0 out of 5 stars Trippy AI art and a confusing story to go along with it
This book was a huge disappointment and a regrettable purchase. It’s a shame, really, because the previous two books were really good. This one is just a confusing mess with a collection of awful illustrations to back it up. Aside from the very stiff drawings that were inked so thickly and without any variation that they looked like they belonged in a coloring book, the portions of the book that were obviously done by AI look hideous. I don’t know how they managed to get approved. There is no way that any human would have produced something so photorealistic while so bizarre looking at the same time. It is really jarring to try and look at the panels as they make you feel like you’re high on one of Scarecrow’s fear toxins. I wish I could return this it’s that bad.
1.0 out of 5 stars SPOILERS: Mythology, wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle
Chip Zdarsky's run on Batman reaches an all time low, which is quite an achievement in itself. To get to the crux of it, both Bruce and the Joker had the same mentor in the form of Dr Daniel Captio, the man who taught Bruce how to segment a part of himself into an alternate personality, Zur-En-Arrh. It turns out, he gave the Joker the same training, who was able to parlay that into three different personalities, tying into Geoff John's Three Jokers story. It also turns out that the Joker knew right from the get go who the Batman was and all his years of crimes and escapades have been a singular drive to bring out Zur-En-Arrh. In fact, it is more than suggested that Captio himself gave the Joker the ideas for all his most well known story arcs, Death in the Family, Death of the Family, The Killing Joke etc. , as a means for the Clown Prince of Crime to bring him out.Previously in his Bat-Man of Gotham multiverse story arc, Zdarsky had the Joker become insane in the first place due to the actions of the Red Mask driving him to it with his influence. So two of Zdarsky's own creations are directly responsible for the Joker as he is today, an utter travesty of retcons. So no longer is the struggle between Batman and The Joker a series of independent events with their own causes and motivations, no longer are they the arbiters of their own destinies but merely pawns in one long, drawn out plan. It screams of writer who thinks he is more clever than he actually is.This completely removes any agency from these characters and their interactions, rewriting history for no legitimate benefit. How DC Editorial approved this story idea is frankly beyond me and shows a lack of appropriate care in the handling of these characters. The sooner this run is retconned out of existence, the better.
1.0 out of 5 stars Magically the kindle version has vanished
Bolo has screwed up comixology so much that they can’t even keep the same day digital release that has been going on since 2011. What an absolute joke this is, they monopolized the digital comic market and then just drive it into the ground
Looks interesting read.
Good graphic novel, and an interesting storyline. Good colours and artwork, throughput. Great. Thanks.

Not the best read
I felt like the narrative didn’t flow as well as other titles. The art style was great throughout but not my favourite book.In terms of the delivery, perfect condition and arrived on time.
Too much
There is a lot about this book that is really good, and a lot of things are set up for later or explained in the past, but there is too much going on.As a continuity lover, I am really glad that elements of Batman Knight, the 3 Joker's, and the Joker's personalities are brought together. However, this book is all over the place. The different artwork to show what era (past, earlier present, or present) the book was set in, but it is still very easy to get lost in this book. This book touches on Zur-En-Arrh, Failsafe, early currupt Gotham, returns from the Gotham War (I think not quite an explanation), the fall out from the Gotham War, the Bat Family, the Joker and more??? It is too much for one book. This is trying to read 4 books/stories at the same time. I have faith that Chip Zdarsky will bring everything together in the end, but wow, I have no idea how, especially with all the other stuff coming up in the DCU. The book finishes with a varient covers gallery.
