5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent story!
I wanted to check out Superman comics since I loved the new movie. Usually when it came to DC I stuck to Batman or Green Lantern for the most part, however, I loved this story. I'm also starting to love Superman, and more importantly, I love what he stands for. He's a shining beacon of hope and kindness, and he's an example of the best of humanity. This is also a great way to check out these comics cheaply. I highly recommend, and I hope they release Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in this format because I want to read that before her movie, since that's what I hear the movie is largely based on.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Story And A Great Idea, Compacted A Bit Too Much
There's something comforting about being able to read the amazing All Star Superman series by Morrison and Quitely collected into a compact sized graphic novel. DC has followed Marvel in providing an affordable digest sized novel line that stands as a great entry point for new readers, younger and older. On the point of quality, this is an amazing story about Superman and the importance of his life and legacy realized by a writer known more typically for his cynical takes on heroism, and one the best artists in the industry. Definitely worth reading to see insightfully why he's such a legendary character. On the standpoint of the compact graphic novel format, I have some issues to address. This is a very accessible way to read great stories and I'm very much in support of it but it comes off in quality as "budget". The quality of the paper, the graphic design presentation, the colors and re-sizing of the art is a mixed bag. The covers waste a lot of real estate on a black banner instead of art, with a design that includes too much text. Resizing the art has also impacted the vibrancy of the colors, leaving them muddled and dark. Additionally, the text in the word balloons is quite small, which might make casual reading less enjoyable.I love the idea of an affordable format that makes it easier for new readers, especially kids, to jump onboard. This would make for a great gift from anyone trying to get someone into the hobby of reading comics. I just think the presentation and re-sizing could be done better. The DC Compact line comes with higher page counts but the "Mighty Marvel Masterworks" digest line is wider and taller, with much better quality paper that makes the art feel vivid.Ultimately, because the story and art is so amazing, I'll always recommend reading and owning All Star Superman, but I think this format should be viewed as more disposable than collectible.
5.0 out of 5 stars love it
great book!! came in great condition!! i loved the story
5.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read.
This is definitely one of the best Superman stories that I’ve read. There is some filler that I could’ve done without, but each filler story plays a role in the overarching story that’s being weaved together by Grant Morrison. I also enjoyed the art by Frank Quitely and Jamie Grant. They make for a great team.
5.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Way to Read the Whole Story
Great story of a wholesome Superman. I was not sure of the compact comics edition, but it is so worth it. You lose some print quality on the paper, but you get the whole story for $10. Worth it. I’ll be grabbing other compact comics editions of other DC stories.
5.0 out of 5 stars My first Superman comic
I loved this comic from beginning to end. I am not a fan of Superman in general. He is far from my favorite superhero. I always want to give him a chance though, which is why I read this comic. I saw this recommendation on TikTok, so I decided to check it out. I’m glad I did! This comic looks so Cinematic, so many of the panels are breathtaking. The many adventures in this book were so fun to read. One of my favorite storylines was when Superman gets stuck with all the Bizarros and meets Zibarro. Also, it was amazing to see Superman accept his fate, and give himself a to do list of things he needs to get done before he dies. The guys cares so much. Overall this comic gets a 5/5 stars from me. I loved it! I can’t wait to check out other Superman comics.
Epic and moving
An amazing piece of storytelling out of the DC continuity. Not an elseworlds per se but an alternative take on the Superman mythos by Morrison and Quitely
BEST SUPERMAN STORY OF ALL TIME
If you ask any comic book fan what the most definitive superman story is, chances are that they will mention this book. I dont want to spoil anything but if you are here only for the story then the DC compact edition is the way to go. However, if you can afford it, the Deluxe Hardcover and Absolute editions will bring you the full experience of the book.
Over-hyped. All-Star is 3.5 stars.
This award-winning story from 2005–2008 has received much praise but I believe they are excessive. The pacing is there but the entire story comes across as episodic to me. The story can be distilled to the following: Lex Luthor engineers the eventual death of Superman, but before then Superman completes 12 tasks/labours (shades of the 12 labours of Hercules). As the story progresses, many past Superman mythos are dredged up and reimagined. Not all of the 12 labours are properly identified. As such, a reader's list of these 12 labours will likely differ from that of another. A few chapters also border on silliness. For example, in Chapter 3 there is the silliness of Samson and Atlas vying for Lois Lane's attention like two infatuated high-school boys. There is scant introduction to Leo Quintum ... who he is, his background etc. And the same goes for his lunar-based P.R.O.J.E.C.T. The technologies presented in the story are also quite farfetched/unrealistic. In Chapter 6, I believe the bootstrap paradox comes into play. This paradox, in my opinion, is illogical. I extracted this explanation from Wikipedia: Bootstrap paradoxes violate causality by allowing future events to influence the past and cause themselves. There are attempts to develop the characters but they are not entirely successful. The writer tries to bring out Superman's character and values but the treatment is superficial and there is insufficient depth. The artwork is something else though. The panels are very nicely drawn and digitally coloured. But here, there is the unnecessary sexualisation of Lois Lane. The book is readable and enjoyable in parts. As such, I just cannot bring myself to call it a great story. I feel a 3.5-star rating is appropriate and generous enough (not five).
Enjoy it
Great story and awesome format for newcomers and all graphic novel enjoyers
