Look Where We Live!: A First Book of Community Building (Exploring Our Community, 3)

Description:

In this engaging nonfiction picture book, five young friends --- Nick, Yulee, Pedro, Sally and Martin --- spend the day traveling around their neighborhood and participating in activities designed to raise money for their local library. Along the way, they learn about the people and places that make up their community and what it means to be a part of one. A map opens the story, with each of the places the children will be visiting labeled, including the gas station, retirement home, school, police station, soccer field, community garden and, of course, the library! Then each of the following spreads features a different location, detailed in a bright, busy illustration. Illustration captions expand the locations’ connections to the concept of community. For example, when they stop at a yard sale, the caption reads, ”Donating means you give something to help a good cause. You can donate money, things or your time.“ In some cases, readers are asked to find things or people within the illustrations, which adds an interactive experience.

Author and illustrator Scot Ritchie has created a rich resource for social studies lessons on places, roles and jobs within a community, and what it takes to be a responsible citizen. But there is also the potential here for even broader classroom discussions, including about the economy of a community, geography and mapping, and how the character education concepts of cooperation, responsibility and teamwork apply. The author has also included step-by-step instructions for a puzzle-making project.

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1—This cheery picture book emphasizes the importance of community, describing the different facets of one particular suburban neighborhood. A multiethnic group of young friends—Nick, Pedro, Yulee, Sally, and others—take part in activities together as they prepare for a street fair to raise money for the local library. The neighborhood tour includes some familiar picture book community staples, such as the library and a community garden. Each section also highlights important aspects of living in a community and includes a brief comment or conversation prompt ("Working and playing together help make a community strong"). The sunny illustrations are packed with inviting details and friendly characters. Parents and teachers will particularly appreciate that Ritchie also stresses the role of retirees, local businesses, and ordinary citizens. VERDICT A strong selection for preschool collections in any community.—Rachel Anne Mencke, St. Matthew's Parish School, Pacific Palisades, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Intoduction to Civic Life for Kids

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } This is a wonderful introduction to community building and public life. I bought this book for my son’s second grade class, since I was asked to come in as a “mystery reader.” The kids were really engaged, and loved looking for clues in the illustrations. It’s a well done, and its message is positive and inclusive. I absolutely recommend it!

Five friends join the street fair to help their community raise money for the library. The children check out each of the various activities and learn more about their community. They learn how they can fit in and make a difference. Each page has bright, colorful illustrations that are full of detail. The pictures help tell the story. Each page has a description of what the children find as they visit each part of the street fair. Then in bold print the author tells why that particular person is contributing to their community. At the back of the book are instructions on how to make a puzzle that illustrates community. There is also a glossary for those harder to understand words. This book would be a great addition to a classroom or home school curriculum. The book encourages unselfishness, awareness of others, kindness, compassion, and respect of others. It also opens up the opportunity for dialogue about community.I received this book free of charge from Children's Lit in exchange for my honest review.

3.0 out of 5 stars Use as a resource for introducing a community or how to support local businesses, not much of a story

A child's introduction to the community, and how to support local businesses, how to make the community a better place, and how to be a good citizen. This doesn't flow as a story so much. It's definitely meant to be used more as a nonfiction book with youngsters learning about their community (looks best suited to lower elementary). The last page is a search-and-find for the main characters introduced in previous pages, but I didn't feel like they did a good enough job introducing any of them to be able to pick them out of a crowd (especially when the artist's illustration style makes many of the people look similar). Anyway, the main content is good, definitely can see lower grade social studies classes using this, just skip the last spread.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bright and fun and informative!

This is a cute and fun informative book for children about communities. The story follows five friends and their dog as they enjoy a street fair that is raising money for their local library. Including a yard sale, car wash, community clean up, a lemonade stand at a retirement home,a community garden and lots of fun activities the multicultural group of children experience their community and have lots of fun. The book ends with an art activity and a glossary. I like the bright, colorful illustrations and think this book will be fun to read and use in schools and homes. I received this book free to review from Netgalley.

I have purchased both versions; online and the hard copy. I implemented this book into my ELA lessons for 3rd graders. I was able to create multiple lesson activities based on this book. The book contents good amount of information about the types of communities we live in. Lots of visuals, colorful, and well detailed. Students referred to the book constantly for vocabulary words and to explore the ilustration. The pictures are beautiful. Also, it includes an extra activity idea to use in the classroom.
