The Land of Little Rain (Warbler Classics)

Description:

• Includes 52 illustrations that appeared in the original edition and
• a 1000-word detailed, research biographical note on the life of Mary Austin

Mary Austin’s love of the desert is everywhere evident in The Land of Little Rain, a collection of fourteen vignettes about the land and people of the region that today includes Death Valley National Park and the Mojave National Preserve. Part nature essay, personal essay, folk legend, and local history of the California Sierras, this enduring American classic resists classification. Her lyrical observations are infused with a deep understanding of the flora and fauna of the area and an appreciation of the people she encountered and befriended there—Shoshones and Paiutes, Mexican and Chinese immigrants, shepherds, stagecoach drivers, and miners among them. Austin’s writings have been compared to the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Muir, and Aldo Leopold, but her poetic sensibility is purely original, winsome, and entirely her own. This Warbler Classics paperback includes the illustrations that appeared in the original edition and a detailed biographical note.

Mary Austin (1868-1934) was a prolific American novelist, playwright, essayist, and critic. Her best-known work, The Land of Little Rain, was an immediate success upon publication and launched Austin’s thirty-year writing career. In addition to making a special study of life in the Mojave Desert, Austin was also an early advocate of women’s rights, a protector of the environment, and a champion of Native American and Mexican American rights. In all, she produced more than thirty books and two hundred and fifty articles by the time of her death in 1934.

The writing is beautifully descriptive and feels like a guided meditation for the reader. I can return to this book again and again discover something new in each reading. Trigger warning: The historical context is sympathetic to, but does not adequately express, outrage or emphasize the injustices waged against the indigenous peoples who are often mentioned throughout the text. As a non-indigenous person, I didn't find much to be offended by, but I'm also probably a lot sensitive than I realize.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Book by a Woman in Love With the Desert

C.B. · February 24, 2023

I ordered this book to read during a two month stay in the Mojave desert outside of Joshua Tree, California. I couldn’t have picked a better book for a long desert retreat. The book consists of 14 vignettes of desert life a little north of where I was living, and in a much earlier time. The prose style is beautiful, sometimes charmingly antiquated, but it is never style for style’s sake; it always grows out of her sharp observations and sensitive feelings. It’s a lovely book because she loves the desert, and she teaches her readers how to love it too. Read it with your IPhone in hand to look up the desert plants and landforms she discusses. Read it slowly, savoring her sentences and feeling your way into her experience. You’ll come away with your own sensibility sharpened and deep passion for the desert and all its tough life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Primer For Those Who Develop A Love For The Desert

S.O. · July 11, 2023

Mary Austin was indeed a product of a future time. Her writing style is like that of songs, and very descriptive at the same time. This is the kind of literature that I resisted as a High School and College student. If only I would have known then what I know now. I hope my Grandchildren read this book, and develop a respect and love for the East side of the Sierras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent nature prose from pre-automobile era

I highly recommend this book if you like nature writing from the pre-automobile era. It is absolutely great. Lots of wonderful aphorisms hidden in the text and interesting Native American history about the S. Cali desert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can’t recommend enough!!!!

T.B. · August 14, 2023

By far the best edition of this classic! The illustrations are exquisitely reproduced and add so much to the charm of Austin’s winning tales of her adventures on her own in Death Valley and the Mojave Desert. Her accounts are especially poignant because they can never be replicated, taking place as they do in a world that has disappeared. She befriends and learns from indigenous people of the area—the Shoshones and Paiutes—as well as Mexican and Chinese immigrants, shepherds, stagecoach drivers, and miners. Her love and knowledge of the flora, fauna, and people of region are contagious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this book

What a jewel of a book. I grew up in California. Spent a lot of time hiking, camping, and kayaking through the areas described in this book. Her observations put me back in those places. Her use of language is wonderful, and the narrator is perfect in the audio version. I think I have to buy the hard copy so that I can see the illustrations. I'm on the last chapter and do not want it to end.
