AUTHORSdb 2018 Gold Medal Winner (science fiction)

If you're fans of dinosaur books for adults like Michael Crichton's
Jurassic Park and Lost World, must read adventure books like Greig Beck's To the Center of the Earth series, or amazing action stories a la Steve Alten's Meg franchise, you're going to LOVE the Kronos Rising series!

THE SAURIAN WAR RAGES ON

Unaware of the brutal battle that has just taken place between Ursula, the giant Megalodon shark, and the macropliosaur designated Typhon, Dr. Derek “Dirk” Braddock seizes upon his mentor Eric Grayson’s absence and launches a dual-pronged mission into Earth’s bloodstained seas.

His brother Garm, commanding the anti-biologic submarine
Gryphon, is assigned the dubious task of hunting down and exterminating Typhon. Meanwhile, Natalya Dragunova, captain of the Antrodemus, prepares to penetrate the perilous waters of Diablo Caldera – the Cretaceous-era lake from which the savage pliosaurs originated.

Neither of them has any idea what is waiting for them.

Soon, Dirk’s investigation into his mother’s untimely death uncovers a shocking truth: one that, when revealed, will shake the research facility known as Tartarus, and his world, to the core. Malevolent forces are at work that Dirk is unaware of, and he soon finds himself fighting not only for his life, but the lives of everyone he loves.

Meanwhile, lurking in the darkness of Tartarus’s abyssal depths, the ultimate horror waits . . .

Kronosaurus is back in . . . the KRONOS RISING series!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"While Kraken - Volume 2 has plenty of twists, turns and mysteries to be explored, fans who read for the sake of the near Kaiju-esque battle sequences between larger than life monstrosities will not be disappointed. Highlights include a cataclysmic encounter between a nuclear submarine and a giant octopus, as well as, for the first time in the series, the introduction of fierce land-based creatures (just when you thought it was safe to get out of the water). All of these are tackled with the gusto and excitement that we have come to expect of a Max Hawthorne novel."

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Wrapped Up in Tons of Nautical Fun!!!

B.G. · August 3, 2018

Plot:While searching for predatory prey, Garm Braddock and his crew aboard the Gryphon come across an old WWII vessel that doesn’t show up on their records.Indeed a great find. That is until something goes awry.Within the dilapidated structure of metal and ghostly halls, a creature (or creatures) have made their home and will do anything to protect it.Meanwhile, Natalya has her orders from Tartarus headquarters’ own scientist, Dirk Braddock to investigate an island known as Diablo. With the horrors of each mission getting worse, the terror strikes home as mischievous and insidious deeds will be reveled!Review:For a book whose length of story time runs for 513 pages, this book never gets boring nor padded down with unnecessary filler or dialogue.Much like Max Hawthorne’s other work, this is a quick read. I hate to say though. This took me the longest out of any of his books to read. Eight days but I was super busy so I could’ve done less if I had more time.I’m going to start delving into this review with a minor nit-pick!First things first, for a book that has a cover featuring a prominent Megalodon fin, there’s very little shark action in the book especially when compared to the Kraken. I get it, it’s called Kronos Rising: Kraken (Volume two for that matter) so of course the octopus creature would be focused on more. But then why not feature a tentacle on the artwork at the very least.I will say though that having it focus more on the Kraken creature is a welcome addition. In volume one of the Kraken storyline there wasn’t enough of the title animal in my opinion. That nitpick doesn't affect the rating at all because that’d be unfair! So now, let’s move on to what I love about this book! The biggest complements I can give it are the pacing, characters, story, action and sheer gore-shed!For a third book in an ongoing series, the author doesn’t seem like he’s running out of steam at this point or anytime soon. His storytelling gives us enriched characters with purpose and motivations. Even though most of the character’s backgrounds were told in Kronos Rising: Kraken Volume One, Max still hints things from the past in this newest edition to his series which makes it easier to follow. It’s a story that is filled with wonder, adventure and of course, action! Our curiosity of the sea is a common feeling. We look at a tree and we feel its gargantuan presence yet we can still see the top. We look at the sea, there is not top, end or any other peak in sight. It’s the emotion we endure when something is beyond comprehension yet it is there right in front of us. It is mind over size. There’s plenty of bewilderment to be had in this novel. It makes you feel small either via creature or the ocean floor. We get to go on these journeys with our characters and there’s a lot of exuberating excitement to encounter. It’s an underwater blast of bloody entertainment!Gore:There are some gory bullet hits, people eaten by aquatic reptiles and dinosaurs alike and more!I don’t want to spoil to much but I will say this. I didn’t care about the gore. This time I was to focused on the characters to really pay attention to some of their grisly demises. That’s a talent all in itself from the author.Overall Thoughts:While receiving the score it I will present it with and with said rating being the same as the first novel’s score, I still prefer the first novel. This is an amazing achievement and I’m beyond excited to see what’s next.If you think The Empire Strikes Back has the ultimate cliffhanger you might want to reconsider and consume this book. Definitely read the entire series in order, of course!Once I have more time I’ll read his series front to back all at once and then I’ll have the full Kronos Rising experience! As a wise man once said… " Time to get a Krakin’ "Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Series Ever!

I am such a huge fan of this book series! Max is an absolute GENIUS writer! This is the most exceptionally written book series ever! If you haven't read this book series then you are most certainly in for a real treat! The characters are awesome, the story line is fast paced, with lots of thrilling twists and turns and you'll end each book totally satisfied and yet wanting more! Kronos Rising: Kraken (volume 2 of 3) is so beyond awesome and BONUS it literally has the ABSOLUTE BEST ending I've ever read! You're going to be blown away and you certainly won't have seen this ending coming which of course means that you'll be wanting to pick up the story again immediately as soon as the next volume in the series is released! Thank you so much Max for sharing your fabulous talent with the world! You're creativity as an author and storyteller is exceptional!

I still adore the series. Overall it remains excellent. The twist at the end of this book was an absolute stunner and really knocked me out of my shoes and socks. Terrific! The characters that were killed just broke my heart. Also, terrific for surprising me and really grabbing my mind and heartstrings. The problem I had was Nat's reaction to Garm's death. When a woman looses a long time paramour, even one who is never going to be husband material, particularly in such a gruesome fashion that she sees as it happens, she doesn't giggle and flirt with someone else five minutes later no matter what the situation is. At that moment, Mr. Hawthorne, you completely lost me. I wanted to reach through the book and punch you in the face. It was obvious you have NO clue about women. No decent woman would ever behave the way you had Natalya behave. That is slut behavior, pure and simple. Obviously you have never been with women who have feelings you don't have to pay for. Incredibly bad form. If you think this little of our half of the species, why even bother putting us in your books? You write so well. Your construction of this plot is terrific. You create this strong, intelligent, sexy, beautiful submarine commander who is one of our heroes poised to save the day and then you denigrate her with a bunch of cheap slutty behavior that would disgust any common streetwalker.Have you ever been in a war? I have. When you loose friends, colleagues, acquaintances, etc. it's not all fun and games. The entire crew of the second Orion submarine were inappropriate throughout their entire mission to Diablo Caldara. Once they saw the Gryphon be destroyed, they should have been subdued--even serious. Joking around and flirting was unbelievable and inappropriate. It was tacky.

While reading the series "The MEG" by Steve Alten which I acquired from Bolo I was directed to Max's collection of books which involve the predator Kronosaurus.. I have been a fan of sharks since Jaws and recently of Megalodons owning a sizable fossilized tooth. Intrigued I decided to order the entire series and started reading them. I was instantly hooked on Kronos Rising and eagerly started Kronos Kraken Vol #1 and just finished Vol #2. I love the details in the book...the depth of descriptions, however I must tell myself it is just a book when the whales become dinner RIP brave Orca Pod. I love the character development over the series...the depth of their strengths and even weaknesses. I love the strength of the women especially...yeah the men are the "heroes" but the women hold their own and do not back down. That is why I can't wait for #3...what is the fate of my favorite characters....the strong females including the Kronos Gretchen. This is a great cross between Jaws and Jurasic park...and I can't wait for the showdown between the Megalodon and the Kraken which is promised...I am rooting for the Megalodon...BTW...they are both females.... Off to Diablo where it all started.

Absolutely brilliant

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. It held me captivated from start to finish. I'm not going to give the end away, but WOW I never expected that !!!This book covers the twins finding out what happened to their mum, and their realisation that Dr Grayson isn't what they thought. A real life combo of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde with a healthy dose of Frankenstein. If you're a can of such, this series is a must read. Enjoy.

In comparison to the very first novel the Monsters and weapons keep getting bigger and bigger, we've seen the first nuke, science is less plausible, sexual references are strewn more wildly. I am not sure where this is leading, but there is less reflection and more adrenaline and testosterone in the mix than before. It is very readable but plausibility is declining.
