4.0 out of 5 stars Long but well-written
The Estate could have been tighter with 75% of the words. There was so much retrospection that it got tiresome at times. Having said that, it’s such an unusual concept that it struck a chord with me.Camille’s devotion to one artist was consuming. I didn’t like her trust and adherence to Maxime. He was such a manipulator. She would have figured this out sooner. Unless she wasn’t as smart as I wanted her to be.The ending was left open. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but if there’s a sequel, I’ll read it.
3.0 out of 5 stars Feels a little flat
This novel sounded promising: an art historian who can enter the world in which the artwork was created, sometimes taking others with her. However the world created did not live up to the hype. It was tough getting into this book, and keeping reading it. The characters were too flat and predictable for me, and none of the characters were likeable to help keep me interested. This was not a book suited towards my tastes as a fantasy, magical realism and historical fiction reader, but would likely better appeal to those who enjoy thrillers.
5.0 out of 5 stars Art Related Gothic Mystery
Sarah Jost very convincingly combines themes involving art, obsession, class, and gender politics within a speculative mystery in THE ESTATE. The book takes place in two timeframes, current and several generations past. In modern day London, Camille Leray, an expert on the sculpture of a woman artist from the past, spectacularly flares out. While in the midst of a breakdown, she is invited to a castle to authenticate some sculptures. The castle, and the family who owns it, have ties to both Camille and the suspected sculptor. What Camille finds, as she falls under the spell of the castle's owners and occupants, is a darkly dangerous plot to use her talents in the service of greed and social striving of the aristocracy.Camille's talent is the ability to truly get into the minds and worlds of artists whose work she analyzes. There's a bit of fairy tale to the plot, but it's more darkly gothic than lightly magical. As Camille confronts the consequences of familial trauma and male misogynistic dominance, she further develops her skills as a means to protect herself and others. This is a complex mystery with strong characterization and an almost palpable atmosphere. The plot is compelling, the characters well developed, the setting transportative, and the integration of art fascinating. I found this hard to put down and will definitely be watching to see what Jost brings us next.
4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read
I was fully enraptured from the first chapter. A woman who can enter paintings and witness what the artist was feeling and doing at the time they were creating. A near death experience at the age of seven that seems to have triggered this ability. A castle tucked in next to a pond in France. The vastness and the wonder fully intriguing the most innocent of visitors. I loved the whirling sense of wonder that Sarah Jost created in her writing. The mystery behind the story. The well-formed characters that spark your senses. Did I say castle? I love a story that is set at a castle during the present era.Camille Leray is falling to the bottom of an endless pit. Her job that she has thrown herself into is gone. Camille is unwilling to back a piece of art that she does not believe is created by her favorite artist, Constance Sorel. She has studied every piece that she has created. Night Swimming is the one piece that is missing. She knows the one she entered is not it. It is too heavy, dark, scary, nothing like the others. She made a choice, and she must live with it. After touching bottom her dreams come true, and she receives an email from Maxime Foucault, the boy she met as a child. The man with a castle. He is inviting her to come examine some pieces he believes are Sorel's. Can she come? She climbs out of bed, puts the cake down, and heads for d'Arvor. As the days tick by things become just a bit odd, not adding up. Is this Sorel's actual work or is it the work of someone else? This book catered to all my senses. The descriptions and details are spot on, making me become one with the sculptures. To witness the decay around the castle. In this day and age there really is no way one family can upkeep a house this size. That does not mean they do not try everything in their power to hold on.
2.0 out of 5 stars Eh
I desperately wanted to love this- but I just could not get into it. It felt hard to follow in my opinion and just like the slowest burn ever. I absolutely know this will be amazing for others so I recommend for readers to try it out and see how they feel.. the premise of the story sounds so good! Again, just wasn’t for me!
3.0 out of 5 stars Magic and art.
