About the Author

Prof. Henry's business card says, "Damsels rescued. Dragons slain. No reasonable request denied ... unless the dragon's really big." Carved Signs and Mechanical Marvels come forth from the fertile mind of The Professor. When he isn't rescuing damsels and slaying dragons he can be found working on new things in his secret lair ... or taking a nap. (The Professor isn't as young as he used to be.) Although The Professor has been a woodworker for over sixty years, he has embraced CNC machining as his go-to tool for making gears and parts for his automaton artworks, as well as the signs he makes out of wood and weatherproof high-density urethane. He's a Contributor on RouterForums.com where folks with all levels of woodworking skills hang out to share projects, and seek or dispense advice, and is a firm believer in passing knowledge on to others. Most of the Professor's projects embrace his fundamental philosophy that "Life is short so have fun."

5.0 out of 5 stars Clears the confusion about CNC

T.L. · September 24, 2018

Like many others, I'm very interested in CNC routing. What's kept me away is the spectre of learning all the basic language and what it means. This book clears all that initial confusing information up in straight forward language with lots of pictures. The author is actually one of five official contributors on The Router Forums, certainly one of the best woodworking sites on the internet. "Professor Henry" is one of the people who has got a good grip on CNC and is making high-end specialty products for commercial customers. His experience as a designer and printer show in the clarity of style and heavy use of very helpful pictures. There are several hard to find reference charts, and he outlines the choices on software, including the Linux based low cost versions. Visit The Router Forum and search for CNC, including posts on how to make money with your CNC. The "professor" posts as Gaffboat on the forums so you can ask questions online. A number of other experienced CNC users will probably comment as well. The CNC community on that site keeps expanding. If you're thinking of jumping into the CNC world, this book is an excellent starting point for newbies.

5.0 out of 5 stars The FIRST BOOK needed in your CNC education….

WOW!!!!! Can someone please let me give this book 6+ stars!!!!!!!!!!!Simple, easy, practical information that someone with simple common senses could understand all of the scary things a BIG AND BAD CNC MACHINE is capable of doing.I’m not now an expert, but when someone takes time to explain the $10,000.00+ machine they have presented before me, I’ll feel a lot more comfortable and confident KNOWING what they are discussing and attempting to teach me.I understand Routers and machinist flutes for wood and metal and this simplified book was worth it’s weight in GOLD.How many stars…………,Ad infidium…………..

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, but sweet

D.Z. · August 1, 2019

Getting started is very accurate. I was able to read this in about an hour. It answered a lot of questions about what bits to use, and put the key concepts of CNC routing in easy to follow dialog. It walks you through creating a project in Vectric's VCarve, and it's a good introduction. The book discusses safety and builds a basic understanding of working with a CNC router. If you are completely new to CNC routing or thinking about starting it, this is a great resource to get the VERY basics. If you have some experience, or going to use VCarve, you might be better off sticking to YouTube videos, or the videos/documentation Vectric provides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Video tutorials make more sense now

D. · February 17, 2020

Well written, easy to understand, useful information geared primarily for woodworkers. Unlike most video tutorials, this book doesn't just tell you what to do but also how, when and why. Although the author uses Vectric’s Vcarve software to explain each topic, the information covered would apply to any CNC or CNC software. I really like the chapter on how to select the right bit for each task to yield fine details in the shortest time. Some of this information is hard to find in tutorials.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect! Get it!

H. · January 31, 2020

Perfect guide! Simplifies everything that may seam to convoluted. Easy to read and with pictures to show what your reading about. Worth every penny! I was printing out pages I found on the web and put them into a binder. This has it all. Makes it easy and it super useful!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Quintessential Book

Y.A. · March 20, 2022

This book is about a 30 minute read. Has a couple good tips on V bit differences, and a couple of reiterations on the order of events needed in order to operate a CNC machine. But really lacks detail, reference material (links). It does a good job of providing inspiration and detail of work thst can be accomplished using the same bit, by adding a couple of different tool paths. It will never be a book used in a classroom.
