First time mystery reader. I was enthralled with the way Gay kept my attention throughout he novel. I enjoyed the detail, I guess she is known for the depth of research she puts behind what she writes. I wish she did my dissertation research I’d have a Nobel or something.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable mystery!

This one leaves you guessing till the end. Lots of interesting details about life onboard a cruise ship for staff and crew. Fascinating medical details add to the reality of the plot. The characters are well developed and interesting. Can't wait till the next book to read more.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHO DONE IT ON THE HIGH SEAS?

C.G. · October 27, 2019

WHO DONE IT ON THE HIGH SEAS?Agatha Christie kept our attention as inspector Poirot solved the "Murder on the Orient Express". Now Gay Courter has done the same when main character Dale Lane becomes obsessed with solving the on board murder of a theatrical performer before her ship reaches its destination in only four days.Dale, an author, is traveling solo on a transatlantic ship to finish her latest novel prior to her publisher's deadline when she finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. As an avid cruiser myself, Courter's vivid description of daily ship routine, typical deck plans and ship venues, memorable passengers and grossly overloaded buffet plates brings back fond memories. All the characters were well developed; no one had an insignificant role in the mystery. Most everyone becomes a suspect and everyone loved or admired the victim for different reasons.Best of all was Courter's development of Dale's personality and character. She is clearly a self sufficient woman who is happy with life (despite a personal tragedy), sociable, well educated, frugal, good-natured and empathetic .... just the kind of person we would all like to have as a friend. This book will keep you alert and attentive until the last page as the scenes and faces change rapidly.I look forward to "Sea"ing the next book in the "Seven Seas Series."

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent start to a new mystery series!

S. · October 4, 2019

If The Girl in the Box is any indication, Gay Courter’s new Seven Seas mystery series will be a hit. I’ve never been on a cruise, and don’t plan to take one, but as both a Courter fan and a mystery fan, I found this first installment completely gripping. Narrator Dale Lane is, like Courter, a novelist and world traveler (Courter’s charming, advice-filled travel blog is accessible through her website). Lane is supposed to be finishing her latest novel while on a cruise from Europe to her hometown, Fort Lauderdale. Instead she’s thrust, not entirely willingly, into the investigation of the death of a well-loved ship-board entertainer, a young Russian woman who has been performing since childhood as a gymnast and contortionist. Courter, through Lane, takes us behind the scenes of both cruise ship life and the land-based world of child protection, and she keeps us guessing till the end. With fast-paced plotting and well-drawn characters, The Girl in the Box is a very satisfying read. I look forward to the next installments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Medical mystery on a cruise ship

For those who like medical mysteries, cruise ships and interesting characters, this book is for you! The plot involves a writer who takes extended cruises and becomes involved in helping to solve the mystery of the death of a crew member- It has a lot of medical detail and interesting tidbits about life aboard a cruise ship. Gay Courter weaves an interesting tale and the ending wraps it all up nicely. A fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery behind-the-scenes of a cruise ship

K. · January 29, 2020

A good mystery with twists and turns and intriguing characters aboard a cruise ship. It was a rare treat to read about the behind-the-scenes operations, crew and attitudes that passengers are not privy to. The inner life of the protagonist/author was a fascinating addition to the mystery story line. Medical details and shipboard authority added substance to this well-crafted novel. The story kept my interest throughout as all Gay Courter’s books do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by an imaginative and well informed author

Not one Gay Courier’s best books

I was excited to get this new book as I’m a Gay Courter fan. However I was disappointed in it. The plot was sound but very technical and I admit I skipped some of the more lengthy descriptive paragraphs. That said I finished it and was moderately satisfied when I turned the last page.
