"Great modern-day thriller! The author knows what he writes...Can't wait for his next book!" —Nancy, Goodreads review

WHEN YOU TO GO PAKISTAN, NO ONE PROMISES YOU'LL RETURN ALIVE.

In the early 90s when America changed course and supported military and economic assistance to India at Pakistan's expense, deputy regional security officer Alex Boyd must defend the US Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan. Fighting against vicious, heavily armed, fanatical terrorists who are supported by a rogue element within Pakistan's military intelligence service (ISI), Alex and his team fight for their lives.

Before the battle even begins, however, Alex must overcome the staid traditionalists within the Foreign Service, itself, who believe nothing should be done to aggravate the locals even in self-defense. The new Embassy press officer, Rachel Smith, an accomplished athlete and intellectual powerhouse, intimately bonds with Alex.

As compelling as it is thrilling, Death in Pakistan is perfect for fans of Tom Clancy and Mitch Rapp and will keep readers at the edge of their seat.

An accurate description of the inner workings of a U.S. embassy in a high threat environment. I will be shortly starting book two in the Alex Boyd series. As a retired DSS special agent and former RSO I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true to life story of an Embassy under attack

The author is a veteran of the State Department and how it operates, the setting is our Embassy in Pakistan. His attention to detail of how Embassies work is right on the mark. I should know as I retired from State after 40+ years of service, 75% of my time was abroad at Embassies around the world. He describes how his office (Diplomatic Security) fits in with the rest of the Embassy staff. There are descriptions of how and what each section does and how they work together to accomplish the overall mission of the Embassy. The main character is the assistant Regional Security Officer Alex Boyd. The principal foil in the Mission is Winston Hargrove IV the head of the Political Section, who thinks he is more important than anyone else at the Embassy. He has no experience in South East Asia and is what is known at State as an EUR type. Hargrove is full of himself and this fictitious character reminded me of several real people I met in my years of service. The story describes how the Embassy security officers and the Marine Security Guards defend the Embassy when it's attacked by terrorists. This is an excellent story and well worth the readers time to devour it.

Death in Pakistan is a compelling adventure thriller told by master storyteller and lifelong foreign service officer Mel Harrison. As fiction, it is completely satisfying. But it is much more than that. It is also an accurate description of life in a US embassy compound, of interest to anyone curious about the foreign service. Further, it is an accurate description of Pakistani culture, politics, mores, homes, dress, food, and weather. Those of us who primarily read non-fiction can perceive this book as an accurate explication upon which a cracking good story has been superimposed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been there, done that - good read!

Mel has written an excellent book that superbly describes life in the Foreign Service as well as the excitement and challenge of work as an RSO in a tough duty station. Like Mel, I have lived much of what he has written about and found the book riveting because it was so relatable. I am a critical reader, especially when I am familiar with the topic or the context around which the author is building their story. I found nothing wrong with "Death In Pakistan" except that it ended before I hoped it would. I have already purchased the next three Alex Boyd adventures and am eager for my next flight so that I may enjoy them.

Having served in various Embassies overseas, I can attest to the authenticity of the inner workings within an Embassy as described in "Death in Pakistan". I found this book to be well written; an easy read; and an action/adventure story that would make a great movie. It definitely kept my interest from start to finish.Phil B.
