5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazingly incredible novel! A MUST READ!
🎵...Queue "Astral Weeks" by Van Morrison...🎵🍾🎉🥳Happy Publication Day🥳🎉🍾What an amazingly incredible novel!I knew from reading the “jacket” that I was going to like this book, but nothing prepared me for its impact. From the first paragraphs of the prologue, I was hooked on this environmental mystery/thriller/love story, and I didn't put it down until the very last lines of the author’s notes and playlist.Kay Smith-Blum created a setting so staggeringly atmospheric and cinematic, not only was I transported back to 1940’s/1960’s Eastern Washington state, I felt cast alongside each of her characters, bearing every emotion they felt, sensing the ghosts and the secrets within. “As far as the wind can blow and the river runs, taking up residence wherever there is life.” ~ Luke HinsonHaving grown up along the eastern seaboard of the US, I know very little of the western states and their histories, especially Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Smith-Blum brought to life and to light something I never learned of in any of my US history classes, much less any textbook - the Hanford Nuclear Plant - helping to expose its fallout from its Cold War days.Tangles is so well-written, well-researched, and extremely relatable – it gives readers authentic insight into the lives of the everyday “Area” citizen. The science in the novel was understandable, the tension so palpable, the dangers so real, I found myself doing my own Google dive to learn more. Tangles is definitely one of my top ten reads of 2024, and I hope it will be on everyone’s TBR for 2025!Thank you to @discerningksb and @suzyapprovedbooktours for my gifted physical copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great novel grounded in truth
Tangles delivered on the promise of a good read. This novel is a compelling blend of Cold War intrigue, haunting mystery, and personal drama that kept me turning pages.Having lived in Seattle for years, I really appreciated how the author captured the unique feel of the Pacific Northwest—especially the tension and quiet resilience in its more rural corners. The setting is so vividly drawn that it feels like a character itself. The story is rich with historical detail, and it’s clear the author did her homework—declassified documents and real Cold War-era science underpin the fiction, grounding it in unsettling truth. The revelations about radiation exposure and government decisions during a turbulent time were chilling and all too believable. The interpersonal dynamics add another layer—especially the depiction of a controlling, abusive husband. That relationship felt painfully real, highlighting how emotional manipulation and fear can tangle up with larger geopolitical dangers. This book doesn’t flinch from hard truths and shows how the choices people make—whether in personal relationships or on a national scale—can ripple out with devastating consequences. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction with heart, edge, and substance.
5.0 out of 5 stars Kay Smith-Blum writes a thrilling tale with Tangles
In Tangles, the reader is brought into a world where the Cold war means more than just that, the imminent perceived danger of Nuclear war, and just working in a nuclear plant, and what it does to the people and land. Mary is the protagonist, and she is living during near a nuclear plant. The book takes place during and after WWII, and Mary's life keeps getting more complicated by the minute. I haven't read anything by this author before, and what a hidden gem. This author has a grand imagination, and talent for showing the story. Mary has to work as a secretary, and she has to deal with a rotten and dangerous marriage, all the while trying to keep her and her children safe, not just from a frightful spouse, but the effects of radiation. Mary is determined and tenacious, and knows no bounds of what she won't do to protect her family. Ben and Lucy are the twins of Mary, and they impact their mother, like most children do, making her more focused on safety and safe living, but some things can't be fixed once broken, and Lucy is paying the price. Maybe Mary and her family all paid the price, as the story fast forwards to Luke, a scientist, whose family is also suffering. Both thrilling and intriguing, all the way to the end, and it has a gripping and incredible storyline. Masterfully written! The connection between the past and what is written as current time, it shows a wide range of talent and skill, along with passion with writing this story. Tangles is the perfect title to this, and unfortunately, what is written in this story, is not uncommon to the world as we know it. Tangles is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book also write a review.
4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Debut!!
Kay intertwines a love story and mystery with in one of the most devastating times during the birth of the nuclear age. Alternating between Mary and Luke's POV's while also jumping from the 40s and 60s in the most seamless way. Not only bringing light to parts of history with Hanford, that have been covered up until the late 1980's but also revealing it all in a way that is easy to follow along and quickly wraps you into Mary and Luke's lives. This book again inspired by true events that I honestly didn't know much about.. At first I just kept relating scenes of the book back to movies I have watched - Oppenheimer, Grave of the Fireflies, even Erin Brockovich, until a MAJOR lightbulb went off and I went into a complete google deep dive and was like oohhh it's.. The Manhattan Project. I love me so many genres of books but when I can truly learn something about history (or it makes me want to do more research) in a non-traditional textbook way I'm all for it.While everything relating to Hanford hit 100% for me, I did find that the love story between Mary and Luke fell a bit short & predictable for me.Kay - The amount of research you put into this novel is clear and incredible. Amazing debut!!
