A.J. Docker’s debut (later known as the A. J. Docker and Banshee series) launches with a wildly entertaining blend of medical drama, dark humor, and fast-paced action. The synopsis comparing it to a thriller meets M*A*S*H (the books, not the TV series), is spot-on.The tone leans more toward M*A*S*H: irreverent, heartfelt, and often laugh-out-loud funny, even against serious backdrops.Doc, a tender-hearted ER physician in a teaching hospital, anchors the story with compassion and wit. When a young girl arrives with a broken wrist and signs of deeper trouble, Doc confides in his close-knit team—including a cop and his K9 partner, Banshee, a spirited Belgian Malinois. Banshee adds both charm and bite to the narrative. When the girl returns later that night, no longer in need of help, Doc suspects something’s wrong and sets out to uncover the truth. What follows is a whirlwind of shootings, car chases, dancers, and danger—not just for Doc, but for the entire team. The pacing is brisk, the characters memorable, and the humor surprisingly poignant. One of the most enjoyable reads I’ve had in a long time.Highly recommended for fans of all genres.

Exciting start to the series. Very much enjoyed this foray into medical mystery/adventure. Characters are morally upright and the plot engaging. Can't wait to start the next one in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime Medicine and Wit, a great combo

“Doc”, an ER physician treats a young female with a tattoo and he suspects she is a victim of abuse. Despite gentle encouragement she does not admit the abuse and leaves the ER only to return later beaten and dying. The only real identification is a unique tattoo and he goes on a hunt to find out who she is and murdered her. This leads him to a tattoo parlor and (ahem) a gentlemen’s club where she worked run by a Ukrainian mob. Because he seeks to find more info on the club, he barely escapes death multiple times at the hands of the Ukranian criminals who are running more than a club. Nice cast of supporting characters: K-9 handler and his dog Banshee, a detective team who does not like doc poking around, a diner owner and ER staff supporting cast. The writing is great, witty and encompasses crime and medicine, my two favorite genres. Bonus points for Banshee the K-9. Entertaining read!

This is my first read by Gary Gerlacher .... And won't be my last. Actually as I write this, I've ordered 3 more of his books featuring A.J. Docker, preferable called Doc.This book is filled with not just a great story line but humor, sarcasm and yes ... twists and turns as well.Truly loved this book and can't wait to read the next book.Keep writing Gary ... Loving not just the book but the humor is a rarity in these types of stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not good

A.C. · October 18, 2025

The story line is fairly interesting but the writing is weak. The main character is literally way too good at everything including besting opponents who have machine guns (after practicing with a pistol at a shooting range). The constant sarcastic ribbing between characters is tedious. I won’t be getting the second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing excitement

Bond, Doc Bond. Fun, silly, and well written. A very enjoyable hero and supporting cast. Doc is something else. Apparently modeled after the author, who must be pretty cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read

J.G.E. · September 7, 2025

Intriguing, funny, and very entertaining, Last Patient of the Night is well written, with enough mystery to keep you engaged. It has short chapters, so as in "James Patterson" style is a great lunch-time read. You can read a couple of chapters, put it down, and easily pick up where you left off

5.0 out of 5 stars JUST A GREAT READ! don’t miss it!

B. · September 21, 2025

I was surprised at how involved I got in the story! It started out simply but ended up with surprising twists and turns! Characters are interesting and the story moves quickly! O to the next one 👍🏻

Great story and characters.

Fantastic book. Couldn’t put it down. Now I want to read the others in the series.

fun, enjoyable, easy to follow

A.K. · July 15, 2025

Had to roll my eyes a couple times because of veeery unlikely coincidences. However, the book was amzing to read, the main character is SO fun, I giggled a lot while reading. A very enjoyable book after all, I'll definitely read the next ones of that series

Escapism at it's best.

P.F. · June 21, 2025

Great story, lots of humour and unlikely action for a doctor/mall cop combo. Doc really is a superhero character just needs a costume.

Thrilling action, excellent story telling

A. · October 8, 2025

I really enjoyed the story and the real life characters. Also, I appreciated the accurate medical expertise shown throughout the book. (If you don't live it, you shouldn't write about it.)Thank you for a superb series opener. Going back for the next installment.

Humor medical facts and an invincible attraktive hero

D.S. · August 3, 2025

The first pages left me confused. The author had chosen very similar names, which were difficult to tell apart. Jean, Jane, Jan, Jenny. And even a couple of police Officers all called Jeans sth.Anyway, after about 30 pages I got the hang of it. Many abrieviations made it difficult, to understand many medical terms. Still I could not stop reading. After a while I enjoyed the author's Humor.I would recommend the book anytime, but you should be fairly proficient in English.I particularly loved the Malinois. And I have bought the second book with Doc.
