5.0 out of 5 stars The Just Right Catholic Cookbook

K.L.K. · April 13, 2023

Really, just right! The sacred art is lovely and the stories are well-told. Dr. Foley's voice and wit shine in this volume. The recipes are straightforward to execute and delicious! We've eaten our way through most all of the March recipes. The Straw and Hay pasta for St. Thomas Aquinas was so, so good, especially with increasing the fish to about 2 lbs. and the volume of cream sauce to match for my large and hungry brood. The recipes are clear and easy to scale up. This is not a splashy blog-style cookbook with a large photo for each step and lots of chattiness from the chef. The pages are matte, so we will see how they hold up to kitchen splashes. However, it is packed to the gills with appealing, adventurous-but-totally-doable looking dishes. The sheer size of the thing may have been the trade-off. Feasts are selected so that there are 1-2 per week, with one recipe per feast. This is probably the difference between my using and not using this cookbook. It doesn't overwhelm! I can easily build one or two special dishes into my very hectic schedule. In fact, it makes it easier to menu plan because it keeps me from falling into menu ruts, getting bored in the kitchen, and hating one of the most joyful parts of life... playing with food and crafting celebratory meals for family and friends!Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful cookbook full of history

I heard a year ago that Michael Foley was working on a cookbook version of drinking with the saints and have been full of anticipation since! Now that I have the book I'm impressed. Not only do we get a wonderful account on many of the great saints, some I didn't know about, we also get an easy to understand recipe that ties into some aspect of their life! I'm looking forward to cooking many of the recipes in the book: creamy Dijon chicken, swedish meatballs with gravy, and barbeque blue cheeseburgers to name a few. I also get to learn more about the saints!

Fr Leo's cookbook is wonderful. The recipes are not just for entrées, but could be side dishes or desserts. All of them seem somewhat fancy and the best part is sitting around the table with the family and discussing the saint that inspired the meal.
