5.0 out of 5 stars A lasting legacy of great "Star Wars" comic art
"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."...a cherished comic strip series concludes!"Star Wars: The Classic Newspaper Comics Volume 3" brings to a close a truly memorable version of filmmaker George Lucas' grand space adventure saga. After giving master comic creator Russ Manning a long overdue tribute in archival form with the first hardcover book of this series, IDW Publishing completes the reprinting of the newspaper exploits of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, and more with this third and final volume of tales created by writer Archie Goodwin and artist Al Williamson. For this lifelong "Star Wars" fan, it is truly a joy to have and to hold these books and the beautiful comic art they contain!Following is a title listing and short story synopsis if each adventure:"The Power Gem." July 6 - October 3, 1982.To defend itself from Darth Vader's recently built Super Star Destroyer, Princess Leia and the Rebel Alliance send Han Solo and Chewbacca on a desperate mission: to find one of the legendary Power Gems, mysterious jewels capable of disrupting the strongest force shield. Bu to gain perhaps the last Power Gem, the pilots of the Millennium Falcon learn they must achieve victory in a deadly gladiatorial contest run by the cunning space pirate Raskar!"Iceworld." October 4 - November 14, 1982.Fleeing from an Imperial space blockade, Luke Skywalker and C-3PO crashland on a frozen world at the edge of the galaxy, only to find two people hiding from the civil war between the Empire and the Rebellion: Frija, a beautiful, lonely young woman; and her father, a former Imperial Governor, who is unhappy with the appearance of new arrivals to his snow-covered hide-away!"It's a Trap!" November-15, 1982 - January 23, 1983.The Star Warriors seek out the aid of Admiral Ackbar and the Mon Calamari race as the Rebel Alliance makes preparations to abandon their base on the fourth moon of Yavin. But complications ensue when the Millennium Falcon is sunk by sea beasts on the waterworld Daluuj, and the Rebels are pursued by the ambitious Imperial Commander Orlok!"Doom Mission." January 24 - April 17, 1983.As the threat of Darth Vader's Super Star Destroyer, christened in battle the Executor, looms larger on the Rebel Alliance, General Dodonna proposes a risky mission involving a single ship carrying the rare Power Gem facing the colossal craft, piloted by one of the Rebellion's best: Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or General Dodonna's son, Vrad. But Luke wonders: is Vrad a great pilot or secretly a deserter and possible traitor?"Race for Survival." April 18 - July 10, 1983.The Rebel Alliance begins the evacuation of their base on Yavin IV, as Imperial Admiral Griff and his fleet, along with Darth Vader and his massive ship the Executor, close in on our heroes. Their only hope is Luke's ability to use the Force to guide the Rebel forces through the dangers of an unable star and its devastating stellar flares!"The Paradise Detour." July 11 - October 2, 1983.When the Millennium Falcon's navi-computer malfunctions, Luke, Han, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 are forced to land on a beautiful, "quiet, peaceful planet," which is unfortunately also the home of a mysterious being with the power to make one's memories dangerous realities!"A New Beginning." October 3 -December 25, 1983.To protect the location of the Rebel Alliance's new base on the iceworld of Hoth, Han, Chewbacca, and Luke take the space pirate Raskar on a whirlwind journey aboard the Millennium Falcon over the frozen planet to find a secret treasure that doesnt exist!"Showdown." December 26, 1983 - February 5, 1984.The Millennium Falcon and its passengers, Luke, Han, and Chewbacca, are captured by a band of bounty hunters led by Boba Fett, with plans to earn the reward for the space smuggler offered by Jabba the Hutt! But among the mercenaries is an old adversary of Han Solo, who wants more than the reward: he wants revenge. His Name: Skorr, the bounty hunter from Ord Mantell!"The Final Trap." February 6 - March 11, 1984.Artoo-Detoo and See Threepio take on a rebel mission to investigate an Imperial Messenger Drone that turns out to be more destructive than expected! It's Luke, Han, and Chewbacca to the rescue aboard the Millennium Falcon, where they soon discover the drone is part of a deadly trap masterminded by the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader! As in the previous volume of this three book collection, the scripts by Archie Godwin and illustrations by Al Williamson create thrilling comic adventures for the beloved "Star Wars" cast of characters. Mr. Goodwin writes stories that totally capture the feeling of the classic film series, and Mr. Williamson draws the "galaxy far, far away" as true as any artist who ever imagined this grand cosmic canvas. Also, the creators' use of a continually evolving comic narrative in the strip elevated the entertainment level of the comic as it furthered its overall story day by day through the length of its life in newspapers across the country decades ago.A character highlight of these stories is Mr. Goodwin's depiction of Luke Skywalker. Following the storytelling ques of "The Empire Strikes Back," the hero of the Death Star battle shown in both the films and these newspaper comics displays a subtle maturity not seen in the earlier strip adventures drawn by Russ Manning or the Marvel Comics written by Mr. Goodwin. While Luke's idealism remains, the writer and artist Mr. Williamson reveal a growing confidence of self in the Jedi hopeful, which is on full display in his brave exploits featured in these comic tales. If this reviewer has any sense of disappointment with these last newspaper chronicles of the Star Warriors, it is my regret Princess Leia did not receive a stronger spotlight in the stories. She seems more of a supporting player while Luke and Han take part in more exciting excursions through the galaxy.Lastly, my critique of IDW's reproduction of the color Sunday installments in this series' second volume has mellowed with this third tome, as I've come to recognize the publisher's desire to recreate the original look of the newspaper comics as much as possible. The Sunday strips are showcased unedited on full pages while the black and white daily strips are richly reprinted three to a page in this collection. The cover to this final book in the series features a stark black and white image of Luke Skywalker brandishing his light saber which is also reproduced on the hardcover's dust jacket. This is a wonderful work. The Archie Goodwin/Al Williamson collaboration on the "Star Wars" newspaper strip stands as a pinnacle of creative achievement in the still on-going comic chronicles of George Lucas' cinematic epic. This entire three book collection comes with my highest recommendation!May the Force be with you, always!
