—Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author of Bird by Bird and Almost Everything
“Eat, Pray, Love meets Anatomy of an Illness meets a Deepak Chopra workshop in this engaging, exquisitely written doctor-as-patient memoir. Cynthia Li humbly, humorously, and honestly unearths the roots of her debilitating illness, but the gifts don’t stop there. With 15 practical, grounded tips for how to heal, this book also serves as an unconventional, whole health prescription, sure to facilitate the healing journey of others. With raw transparency and the kind of courage we need among both doctors and patients, Brave New Medicine charts a new terrain, bridging conventional medicine with functional medicine, nutrition, environmental health, intuition, and spirituality—all in a highly entertaining, hard-earned miracle story.”
—Lissa Rankin, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Mind Over Medicine and The Daily Flame, and founder of the Whole Health Medicine Institute
“In Cynthia Li’s spellbinding book, we encounter the moving story of a physician struggling with her own autoimmune illness. Li's writing is so intimate—and so exacting—that it cuts like a knife. She raises fundamental questions about the future of medicine, her own future, and about being a doctor and a patient at the same time. The result is a beautiful book that will be read and remembered for years to come.”
—Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies
“Each year brings a new stack of ‘how-to’ health manuals, but Cynthia Li’s book is different. It’s a moving, personal—and sometimes unsettling—investigation into the deepest questions surrounding chronic illness. What makes us sick? How do we live with the uncertainty of a mysterious condition? How do we define health in an age when conventional medicine focuses almost exclusively on disease management? The answers Li arrives at in her exploration changes her as a person, and the way she practices medicine. Her book is full of wisdom for both health care practitioners and those suffering from chronic illness.”
—Chris Kresser, MS, LAc, New York Times bestselling author of Unconventional Medicine
“It is a major concession to admit how much Li’s book inspired me, given how deeply skeptical I am about alternative medicine. When Li, a physician herself, develops a terrifying syndrome that regular medicine can’t even identify, she becomes her own doctor, charting her symptoms, doing experiments, and seeking help from whoever offers it. Emotionally, she rises from a crouch of defeat to the confident stride of an explorer—and you will find yourself rising with her.”
—Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Natural Causes, and founder of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project
“This is a memoir for our time. Cynthia Li is a superbly trained physician of internal medicine whose life comes to a halt by a life-threatening, complex illness the mainstream medical community doesn’t know how to treat. Her struggle is replicated thousands of times over by others who face similar mystery diseases. While the path to recovery is rarely simple, Li’s journey and scientific explanations offer hope to many who are suffering. She writes with insight, wisdom, and passion. Her honesty will touch you deeply. Don’t miss this book.”
—Michael Lerner, author of Choices in Healing, and president and cofounder of Commonweal
“Cynthia Li is an extraordinary physician with a comprehensive understanding of autoimmune disease as a practitioner and a patient. The insights she provides in this new book are essential for any patient suffering from autoimmunity. Her book challenges the current health care system model that is in such serious need of revision. This is a must-read for anyone suffering from an autoimmune disease.”
—Datis Kharrazian, PhD, DC, award-winning researcher, clinician, and best-selling author of Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? When My Lab Tests Are Normal
“Cynthia Li shares a deeply personal and inspiring journey, wherein she falls through the cracks of the conventional medical model but then discovers her own lifesaving path through functional and integrative medicine. Her book also includes an excellent resource, filled with practical tips for those who want to learn how to take natural steps to recover their own health and vitality.”
—Akil Palanisamy, MD, integrative medicine physician, and author of The Paleovedic Diet
“Beautifully written, heartbreakingly honest, and deeply inspirational. This is the story of a doctor whose personal experience transforms her view of what it means to be sick, and what it means to truly heal. Millions of people living with autoimmune disease (myself included) will see themselves reflected in these pages.”
—Eileen Laird, host of Phoenix Helix, a podcast dedicated to autoimmune health
“Cynthia Li has written an insightful, captivating account of her own spiral into the depths of a chronic disease, from which prospects of recovery seemed bleak. Li questions the foundational principles learned in her extensive medical training, including the meaning of the term ‘health.’ Emerging from those dark days, Li has a message of hope for others with similar conditions: autoimmunity can be reversible. There is much to be learned by both patients and health care professionals from this deeply personal account.”

Reviews:
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent life's journey read with hints of health instead of a how-to.
There are a lot of (too many) self-help and health books that only mix in smatterings of an author’s journey between rigid how-to doctrines and cookie cutter advice. Cynthia Li spins that Disney'esque press template around to give a well-written and compelling book of her personal journey to health. This is more a testament of finding those healthy tools that work for you as n of 1, without jumping full-on into any dogmatic diet and exercise plans that make their money and fail over time. The book is refreshingly genuine and open about how family, love, career, and identity all center back to the holistic beings we are. The story winds through emotions and life, from early childhood freedom and angst, to spinning out of control, to a long-time resolve. You can feel the weight and time of it all. And in this all are ideas and avenues of science, western medicine, traditional health and wellness, spiritualism, the supernatural, psychology, and more.
5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous prose in this incredibly moving memoir.
I came across this book unexpectedly and I was so glad it did! It’s so easy to fall into Dr Li’s story and feel right by her side in this journey, sparked by illness, one that will shut down nearly everything in her world. The gradual (and hard-earned) process of finding a way back to health, and all that is gleaned along the way, is triumphant.Although some of what she describes is unlike anything I’ve ever been through, Brave New Medicine is written in such a relatable, accessible way. Even though some of the specifics are relatively unusual, Dr Li beautifully captures what is universal in humanity in how she tells it. There’s also a lovely wit and much appreciated light-heartedness that comes through in some of the reflections and dialogue. Overall incredibly inspirational. The third section is packed with advice and practices to promote health and well-being for any and all. Much gratitude for this book!
5.0 out of 5 stars A bare-bones healing book for body, mind, and soul.
I’ve read Brave New Medicine three times now, the first as a fellow seeker interested in another’s story of health recovery, the second as a fellow difficult patient taking detailed notes on her how-to's and what-to-do's, and the third with an eye to reading between the medical lines so I could pay a different kind of attention to my own health narrative.Cynthia’s guiding mantra has been “How to Get Off the Couch.” Mine has been “How to Get Out of the Ditch.” Whatever one's metaphor, those of us on this quest know all too well the frustrations and shortcomings of allopathic reference ranges but the daily realities of functional disequilibrium. This is a generous book. Her utter transparency of detail is a gift of courage and encouragement to dig deep into one’s own understory. She offers tangible steps for optimal health. But a primary intrigue for me has been her path of awakening intuition and how it became a newfound guiding light, first at home as a means of self-inquiry and health recovery, and eventually as a valid diagnostic tool in her clinical setting as a doctor. This is a new paradigm for our Western medical model, one that can foster an enlivened doctor-patient dialogue beyond one's lab results and immeasurable symptoms. It brings to mind the great healing story of the “Fisher King,” in which Parsifal (finally) asks the dying king, “My lord, what aileth thee?” The art and compassion of that very question becomes medicine in itself.I am so grateful for this book and for Cynthia's brave self. Find your own resonance and try some of her suggestions. My personal favorites: qigong practice and cold showers (really!). Both, measurably good.
4.0 out of 5 stars some really good info
This book was full of some really good information. I liked that even a doctor has felt as helpless as I have going through something similar.
5.0 out of 5 stars A stunningly intimate narrative brimming with wisdom
As a reader, I find this book compelling on several fronts. It is brave, very brave. Brave in the courage to lay bare everything - you can feel the unfiltered honesty, and sense that nothing was omitted. The 15 epiphanies that Dr. Li discovers on her journey toward healing are a roadmap to recovery from so many troubles – therein lies the universality of her experience. It is personal, very personal and stunningly intimate. You are in her mind, in her body, vividly experiencing her anguish. Her authenticity is an adaptive authenticity, an evolving personal narrative, as she steps beyond what she learned in classical medical training and incrementally adds the pieces that are missing. As a physician, I find this book, and the new knowledge that she has unearthed, validate what all physicians have strongly suspected, but have been reluctant to fully embrace – that nutrition matters, that circadian rhythms are important, that there is urgent need to detoxify ourselves and our environment, that low levels of inflammation are hard to detect but can wreak havoc. We have all met the patient Dr. Li became, but our prevailing scientific paradigms have not illuminated the way to help. But Dr. Li does. This is, undeniably, Brave New Medicine, urging us to codify it and use the principles she so elegantly lays out. As a human being, I am painfully reminded about how far we have wandered from our bodies. It is time to get back in there. Dr. Li shows us how.
3.0 out of 5 stars nothing new here
Her story was interesting, and I did enjoy reading about her struggles and how she overcame them. Her lessons learned about nutrition are worth knowing. But all she had to do was read a few books that apparently are sitting on library shelves collecting dust. All the "new" discoveries were only new to her. I have known much of them for over 50 years, and the rest for at least 30.I will pass this book on because it adds nothing new to my health book collection but maybe will help someone whose head has been in the sand and needs to wake up like the author finally did.
insight into autoimmune disease/memoir
I liked the book because the author told her story and gives some very good ideas of how to live with autoimmune disease.
An Inspiring and Prescriptive Book for Curing Chronic Ailments
This was an exceptionally well written book that recounts the author's personal trials as she navigates the frustrating world of 'undiagnosed' chronic diseases. As a physician herself, her inability to uncover the cause of her ailments sets her on a journey to discover a new paradigm of medicine which combines the ancient healing traditions of the past and the modern scientific methods of today. Dr. Li's sincere prose retells the emotional lows from enduring a disabling malaise, the grievances from not having people understand her plight and the inner wisdom that she cultivates through adversity. The book was engaging, informative and should be standard reading for all medical professionals. As more and more people fall victim to chronic, 'mysterious' diseases - a medical community that understands the subjectivity of the patient experience and the nebulous nature of illness will be a boon to society at large.
A life-changing enjoyable interesting book to read about unconventional autoimmune disease healing.
OMG this book truly changed my life and the way I saw my own healing. I am suffering with a very similar autoimmune condition with no diagnosis and no name; very similar to the author. I love how she uses the book to tell her life story living as a new mother with a debilitating autoimmune condition whilst also giving practical actionable steps step by step on HOW TO HEAL along the way and how she managed to get her life back without conventional medications. If I could give the author a big massive HUG if I ever get to meet her, this is on my bucket list. I am going through the steps now and I already feel so much better and am out of my bed. I cry as I write this thank you so so SO much. Five Stars.
