Rough: Drawing in 2 Strokes and 3 Moves

Description:

Do you know how to draw a square, triangle, and rectangle? Well, then, you know how to draw!

Rough: Drawing in 2 Strokes and 3 Moves provides you with a way to start drawing that is based on a very simple observation: the human body, as well as everything surrounding us, can be broken down into elementary and basic geometric shapes.

The technique that author and teacher Pierre Pochet shows you here has no fine art or academic ambitions. Instead, it shows you how to quickly draw from memory a facial expression or a bodily movement, to flesh out a picture, to create a perspective, or to sketch a scene.

This approach to drawing is particularly useful for those who have no artistic training but who are considering a career in a creative field, whether that be advertising, design, or graphics . . . as well as for anyone who simply wants to learn how to draw!

About the Author

Pierre Pochet has been crazy about drawing since his early childhood. He used to doodle all over the margins of his notebooks, which did not make his teachers very happy, and his parents even less so. Because drawing comics was “not a real profession,” he studied creative advertising at Brussels’s Center for the Decorative Arts (CAD), which was a revelation to him. He has since had a career as an artistic director in advertising. From 1997 to 2004, he taught creative advertising design at CAD-Brussels, and since 2006 he has taught in the advertising workshop of the Saint-Luc College of Art in Brussels.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for beginners

R.F. · May 29, 2024

Just perfect for me. I started doodling and figured I’d like to actually learn to draw and have had a hard time finding a true beginners course. This book starts at the very basics and keeps it simple. I’ve only been using it for a week but I don’t feel intimidated at all and I’ve had a great time following along with the simple exercises.Another great thing about this book is that it gives you exercises but fully explains what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. They’re core concepts and it’s in a real easy “rough” sketch caricature style of drawing. Took a sneak peak at the rest of the book and it does go over all the basics of drawing. I’m excited and very happy with this one and looking forward to the rest of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great quick way for novices to learn to draw

A.C. · May 2, 2025

DH & I have recently started urban sketching and wanted to learn to quickly get our marks on paper. This popped up in my feed very timely ;)I wanted the "real" book as opposed to the digital version, so that we could both work from it at the same time. We've started a daily practice of pulling the book out and our sketchbooks and working for 5 - 10 mins each evening after supper. We're really enjoying it so far. We've made it through the simple faces and the simple human form so far, and it's exactly what we were looking for. Very happy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rough but good drawings

C. · February 12, 2025

Useful book for any artist who enjoys to draw frequently. However, the book shows sufficient basics of drawing. These are rough quick hand drawn rigs of figures. Serves as a good reference or to get inspired to draw more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unintimidating intro to basics of drawing

Excellent, easy to follow book. Book intends user to make large full-page "rough" of each drawing and author recommends markers. Instead, I am using a sketchbook, with many small practice attempts on each page, and I'm using basic rollerball pens. My goal is to learn to draw well enough to add figures and backgrounds that suit the captions that pop into my head. I think this book will help me get there. Ty

5.0 out of 5 stars Great drawings to go from.

Easy to read and draw from .Would buy again if needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Was Expecting Something Different…

S.M. · June 26, 2024

I’m kind of disappointed in the content of this book. As an artist, maybe I was expecting more? Perhaps this would be useful to a beginner or someone who just wants the basics. Some of the principles of breaking subjects down into shapes were good and the quality of the book itself was great. I wish he would’ve elaborated on why he calls it “2 strokes and 3 moves.” I thought that implied a drawing formula to make quick, rough sketches. But it appears to just be an arbitrary subtitle.

5.0 out of 5 stars For beginners but useful for advanced too.

R.l.C.C. · February 5, 2023

Well i think this is the kind of drawing book that should be use when you want to start a drawing course but find out that most courses are " maybe " to hard to follow .So this is a good begining method ,is easy and non burdening. But once you understand it you shouldn't remain in it .If you can solve the puzzle called drawing with this one make sure to move to a better drawing course in which anatomy and other drawings techniques are needed too.Is good for kids ,and for those artist who have left drawing behind and want to recuperate their drawing skills again ,this is a great beginning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to follow, lots of fun.

C.P. · May 3, 2024

I like the fact that it's compact with lots of characters on each page. Very simple to follow.

Breaks it down into a simple context

L.U. · February 27, 2024

I love this book ! It’s helped me so much ! It’s simplifies all sorts of things that really don’t need to be complicated! Thank you ! I love the size of the book too. It’s easy to carry around !

Lamentable.

How to draw books

A.W. · August 25, 2023

Something different shows techniques for drawing roughly drawing with limited strokes. Easy to carry as it's small. Nice quality book.

It's a reasonable book.

It's a reasonable book not as much explanation as I would like as a complete novice.
