Declutter Your Photo Life: Curating, Preserving, Organizing, and Sharing Your Photos

Description:

Turn your photo chaos into precious memories to be enjoyed and shared!

Now more than ever, we hold our photo collections dear. They are often some of our most prized possessions. Wouldn’t it be great to finally have all your photos organized, safe, accessible, findable, and shareable? With Declutter Your Photo Life by your side, you have just what you need to achieve photo bliss.

Photographers and family historians understand the immense power that photographs have to convey meaning, emotion, and memory. We cherish both old film photos that were handed down by previous generations and our latest digital photos captured on the newest smartphone. But when those priceless memories are unorganized and scattered every which way—on a smartphone, on a laptop, on memory cards and flash drives, on two or three photo sharing websites, in photo albums, and in shoeboxes in the attic—the joy of photography becomes an overwhelming burden. What a mess!

Whether you’re a professional photographer, a casual shooter, or the designated family historian, Declutter Your Photo Life will help you organize and enjoy your photos once again. In this book, professional photo organizer, photographer, and author Adam Pratt teaches you his straightforward step-by-step workflow that, along with powerful image-organizing software such as Adobe Lightroom Classic, will have you taking complete control and creating a calming order out of your photo chaos. And once you’ve mastered Adam’s system—Gather, Preserve, Organize, Share, Maintain—you’ll be able to enjoy and share your photos today and for generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Logical Approach to Organizing Digital Phots

M.I. · February 10, 2025

This book does an excellent job of describing the workflow and related processes of cleaning up the thousands of digital photos people may have. However, some people may be a bit overwhelmed if they are not familiar with programs such as Lightroom Classic, so before delving in, it might be a good idea to look at a few YouTube videos on Lightroom Classic. That being said, the whole approach outlined in this easy-to-read book makes a great deal of sense. I’m looking forward to FINALLY getting my 70,000 digital photos people files purged and organized. This book will be my road map.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the computer savvy organizer

I was looking for a way to organize photos without a computer. This became a gift for our tech savvy relative who loves to scan and digitize things.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect step-by-step guide!

L.F. · September 21, 2023

As someone who loves photos (taking them as well as viewing them), and since I'm the unofficial keeper-of-the-family-memories, I've long been plagued with the idea that I NEED to get them curated and organized. I've made a few attempts to start the process, but always ended up feeling overwhelmed by the size of the task.....until now! This book takes you clearly and concisely thru the steps needed to preserve your photos, whether you have slides, negatives, lots of old hard copies, or thousands (millions?!) of digital copies.....or all of the above (like me). I finally feel like I have a blueprint that will get me started on this task, and will walk me all the way thru to a beautifully organized photo collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful book

5.0 out of 5 stars Great well-written how-to book that delivers the goods

S. · October 16, 2023

Adam is passionate about preserving photographs and has honed his process over many years. His book is clearly written, not just detailing what to do - but just as importantly - why to do it and how to do it efficiently. He provides reviews and recommendations of applications and services. A resource I will go back to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice to tackling the disorganization that is decades of photographs.

D.F. · October 12, 2022

I like the approach the author took by explaining his own experiences and progression from early film (1 roll of film) to the onslaught of files that comes from digital cameras and larger memory cards. I'm using the book as a project plan for my own decluttering and curation of a family photo vault for my children to enjoy for years to come.I recommend this book if you find yourself in the same position and want to make some changes with guidance from a professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource

Shameless promotion of Adobe products, Windows and Mac

S. · June 17, 2025

This book presents a simple and logical methodology for decluttering photos whether printed, negatives, or digital as long as you chosen platform is Windows, Mac OS and you use Adobe products. Some chapters depend completely on Adobe software. This isn't clear from the sample portion you can read on Bolo. According to the author - who worked for decades at Adobe - no other suitable software products exist. And there simply are no other operating systems outside M$ Windoze and Mac OS. What a restricted and sheltered life this poor man has led.The methodology is simple. Gather all your 'photos' at best possible digital resolution into one location; scanning photographing as necessary. After making backups of this clutter make sure you erase all original sources - digital for sure. Then declutter the digital pool. This is time consuming, in my experience the recommended dupeGuru is simple to use and can assist. With matches set to >=99% I found it was unlikely to suggest duplicates where none existed. Where it misidentified were series of photos of fireworks or star trails; typically suggesting a series of 4 or 5 successive digital originals were the same. Burst fires of e.g. helicopters flying past in loose formation were identified as identical; quite reasonably.Linux file timestamps, unlike Windoze, doesn't have an originally created timestamp. So the next part of decluttering / removing duplicates by arranging images in folders Year > Month is rather more tiresome in Linux than Windoze. If the image is a digital original a potentially accurate timestamp for the day/time the image was bagged is likely to be in the exif data; assuming the camera had the correct geographic region, time and date set. If you scanned an old image, or photographed an image / slide etc then clearly any such timestamp will be disengaged to the image contents. So rather more work sorting out dates! A labour of love. However, going through this process does permit one to delete / discard any poor quality images (either low resolution or desultory quality). The next steps are very simple to predict - import your decluttered digital images into Adobe Lightroom. Personally I prefer Darktable (it's free as in zero cost) and a fine product. But there's also Digikam or Rawtherapee - also totally free.As to cloud storage I don't trust the big corporations offerings, such as Google, One Drive or Dropbox. My images are kept 1) on a local SSD, 2) a local backup SSD and 3) on an zero knowledge end-to-end encrypted cloud service. I do pay for that.If you can I suggest avoiding spinning hard disks; with 50,000 digital images (nearly 2TB) running dupeGuru can take hours. On SSD the process was 35mins.Why as much as 2 stars? The book is inexpensive and, if you take a more abstract view of the steps and ignore the advertising, the suggested workflow has merit.

Well Written and Very Educational

One of the best book that I've read for a while. Very organized and I learned a lot of things that I could organize, curate and catalogue my own pictures using this book as my main guideline. I immensely enjoyed this book and I will read it again.
