Mechanical Engineering for Makers: A Hands-on Guide to Designing and Making Physical Things (Make)

Description:

This practical, user-friendly reference book of common mechanical engineering concepts is geared toward makers who don't have (or want) an engineering degree but need to know the essentials of basic mechanical elements to successfully accomplish their personal projects. The book provides practical mechanical engineering information (supplemented with the applicable math, science, physics, and engineering theory) without being boring like a typical textbook. Most chapters contain at least one hands-on, fully illustrated, step-by-step project to demonstrate the topic being discussed and requires only common, inexpensive, easily sourced materials and tools. Some projects also provide alternative materials and tools and processes to align with the reader's individual preferences, skills, tools, and materials-at-hand. Linked together via the authors' overarching project -- building a kid-sized tank -- the chapters describe the thinking behind each mechanism and then expands the discussions to similar mechanical concepts in other applications. Written with humor, a bit of irreverence, and entertaining personal insights and first-hand experiences, the book presents complex concepts in an uncomplicated way.

Highlights include:

  • Provides mechanical engineering information that includes math, science, physics and engineering theory without being a textbook
  • Contains hands-on projects in each chapter that require common, inexpensive, easily sourced materials and tools
  • All hands-on projects are fully illustrated with step-by-step instructions
  • Some hands-on projects provide alternative materials and tools/processes to align with the reader's individual preferences, skills, tools and materials-at-hand
  • Includes real-world insights from the authors like tips and tricks ("Staying on Track") and fail moments ("Lost Track!")
  • Many chapters contain a section ("Tracking Further") that dives deeper into the chapter subject, for those readers that are interested in more details of the topic
  • Builds on two related Make: projects to link and illustrate all the chapter topics and bring individual concepts together into one system
  • Furnishes an accompanying website that offers further information, illustrations, projects, discussion boards, videos, animations, patterns, drawings, etc.

Learn to effectively use professional mechanical engineering principles in your projects, without having to graduate from engineering school!

About the Author

Brian Bunnell is a mechanical engineer by education but a tinkerer at heart. He earned his Engineering Degree from Clemson University in 2000 and has been working in mechanical design ever since. Brian began tinkering early on (creating crazy projects with his Dad), and Making quickly became his lifelong passion.

Samer Najia holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University and an MBA from American University, but he is a passionate serial Maker, particularly of things that move and especially of things that fly. Samer started building at age six and never stopped. His projects just seem to get bigger over time.

5.0 out of 5 stars good guide for a younger person.

gave this to my grandson who is a constant tinkerer. he has it on his "maker" bench as a reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars I needed this book

Perfect book to read and start new projects with.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for review and ideas, e-version skips pages on ipad

c. · April 26, 2020

The book provides a good, simple and basic refresher overview of mechanical engineer concepts at the level a Maker would need (not a comprehensive Mechanical Engineering text by any means) and offers enthusiasm and suggestions on starting your own projects. The kindle version has blank pages on the iPad (for instance pages 7 and 8) but it is complete on the kindle for MAC. So I have to read this book at my computer, for this I knock the overall rating down to a 4.

3.0 out of 5 stars Boring

Too much about their “tanks” and other personal projects. They use PVC pipe for everything yet never go into the physical properties such as strength or environmental impact of it. A waste of time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding work!

Written so well that even a goof like me can understand it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buildings all over again

b. · July 14, 2021

This book can be a trademark for someone trying to just build about anything but with some of those engineering endeavours one might be able to understand just how everything in the world of buildings works rather than there just being ones. Everything you could make with absolutely no help at all with your own ingenuity, this book shows you just how it's done and what is the engineering or i.e. mechanics behind it due to which it is what -ever- it is. Basically just simple and useful guidebook to help you and inspire you to build some or many of the things that involve some engineering that are seen in everyday life and that you could make of your own, especially if you've never tried building anything before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for future engineers!

Got this for my teenage son for Christmas. He wants to go to school to become a biomedical engineer. This is a great book for beginners to make Lego machines. Looks cool and makes me want to sit and play with legos with him again!

I have purchased many books and magazines from Make and really enjoyed them, however with this book not so. This book seems like a vanity project for the Authors, they have promoted projects that they have developed over the years and decided to use "Mechanical Engineering" concepts to justify the title. There are so many areas of poorly described technical issues, scant coverage of materials and modern technology such as 3D printing and CNC. The reason I give two stars is that the book is in colour and printed as the publisher intended, recently I have purchased many books from Bolo that have been poorly printed in Black & White. If you are looking for a book that covers modern day technology then give this a miss, you would get more from playing with Lego or Meccano.

I wish they would advertise this book is either for kids or for people who have no clue how to build things.

Succinct et intelligent

c. · September 8, 2021

Le livre est assez bref et il discute de beaucoup d'aspect de la construction mécanique. Il manque néanmoins de précisions, de détails, de ce qui fait la différence entre un bricolage approximatif et une construction fiable. Plaisant à lire.

Waste of paper

This book seems more of a diary than an actual guide. Don't expect to learn much. The author seems to enjoy sharing his past projects, which is fine, but you won't learn anything useful from it.
